The Celia Rosser Gallery and Café The – Volume I Celia Rosser . 1 March – 27 May 2013. The Celia Rosser Gallery, Fish Creek. Presented in association with Museum of Art | MUMA Renowned botanical artist Celia Rosser is most celebrated for , a three volume series of exquisite watercolour paintings depicting every known Banksia species. Dedicating over 25 years to the project, Rosser’s life work was undertaken when she was appointed by the Vice Chancellor as Monash University Botanical Artist in 1974. The Celia Rosser Gallery are pleased to present this exhibition of twenty three watercolours from Volume 1 in association with Monash University Museum of Art, custodians of The Banksias and the stunning tapestry, Banksia Serrata, which was completed in 1995 by the Victorian Tapestry Workshop working in collaboration with Celia Rosser. As the first time The Banksias have been exhibited in Victoria since 2002, this is a rare opportunity for art and botanical enthusiasts alike. Celia Rosser’s passion for banksias is evidenced in every watercolour. Botanist William Stearn has described them as exquisite works of art, commenting that, “Their grace and accuracy entitle them to be placed alongside the superb Australian wildflower paintings of the great Ferdinand Bauer.” Rosser has been recognised with awards from the Linnean Society of London (1977), the Order of Medal (1995) and an honorary PhD from Monash University (1999). Fittingly, the most recently discovered specie, , was named in her honour. The Banksias demonstrate Celia Rosser’s dual commitment to scientific accuracy and art. Painted at lifesize scale Rosser would build the complex tonal qualities of Australia’s iconic wildflower layer by layer. With some 77 species of the Banksia genus now formally identified, Sir Joseph Banks was the first to collect specimens in 1770 as botanist on Captain Cook’s first expedition – the genus was named in honour of Banks.

The Celia Rosser Gallery, established in 2007 by the artist’s son, Andrew Rosser, with philanthropic support from the late Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, is a unique venue located in Fish Creek, South Gippsland. Now aged 82, Celia Rosser enjoys the opportunity to meet with visitors to the Gallery, often stopping to chat – explaining her techniques and recalling stories of her adventures collecting the samples for each painting. Rosser’s Banksias have been highly lauded and recognised internationally as a superb example of botanical illustration. Since completion The Banksia series has been exhibited widely, at esteemed venues including; the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew London, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the National Library of Australia in Canberra and the Royal Botanical Gardens, Sydney. A survey exhibition of Celia’s work was also held at the State Library of Victoria, which toured to regional Victoria. ● Celia Rosser Gallery Promontory Rd, Fish Creek, Victoria, 3959 Open hours: Thursday – Monday, 10am 4pm. Gippsland Art Gallery ● Gillian Kline Print 30 March to 19 May. Briagolongbased printmaker Gillian Kline presents a series of reflections on contemporary life in her exhibition Print. While drawing predominately from observation, her finely crafted linocuts and etchings also use the imagination to create mood and atmosphere. Kline’s exploration of the human condition is modulated by the light cast from different times of the day. Opening Friday 5 April 6.00pm. ● Chris Stubbs On the Edge 30 March to 26 May. Chris Stubbs blurs the line between art and activism in On the Edge. The Gippsland based artist examines the precarious relationship between animals and humans, in a suite of new and recent sculptures. Stubbs forcibly confronts the troubling aspects of this longstanding relationship, through works that also reveal the artist’s characteristic charm and humour. Opening Friday 5 April 6.00pm. ● The Shock of the Nude . The nude has a long historical relationship with art, which in recent years has become clouded with suspicion and mistrust. The Shock of the Nude celebrates the nude in all its forms, encompassing a feast of works from acclaimed national and international artists from this and the last century. 6 April to 2 June. ● Flourish Gippsland Secondary Schools . LaTrobe Regional Gallery ● Mute Reason Works from the CBUS collection of Australian art . 27 April 25 August. Many of the works in this exhibition were made in the 1990s,a decade that questioned, reminisced and acknowledged society’s impact on our identity. The previous‘greed is good’ decade, where the market ruled and individualism prevailed had laid the foundation for a fractured and lost society when the ‘bubble burst’. The last decade of the 20th century presented itself with accompanying anxieties around navigating and embracing the new global society, with shifting power structures and beliefs. There was a nostalgic look to the past and a disenfranchised look to the future. How were we to find meaning and authenticity in this new world where previous certainties no longer exist? Many of the artists represented in this exhibition reflect these concerns. Artists include Rick Amor, Peter Booth, Stephen Bush, David Keeling, Emily Kngwarreye, Jon Cattapan, Lindy Lee, Hilarie Mais, Robert Owen, Steig Persson. ● Transcendence Photographs by David Stephenson . A Monash Gallery of Art Travelling Exhibition. 20 April 16 June. David Stephenson has photographed a range of subjects in countries around the world. These have included landscapes, cityscapes, skyscapes and cathedral ceilings. While the immediate subject of his works has varied, the underlying themes and ideas within his photographs have largely remained consistent. Stephenson uses photography to transcend visible reality and explore abstract, intangible themes such as time, mortality and spirituality. To explore these themes, he strategically employs the medium of photography in a number of ways, using long exposures, different viewpoints as well as light, colour and form. ● Hide and Seek: SelfPortraits from the Cunningham Dax Collection . 23 March – 19 May. Hide and Seek: SelfPortraits from the Cunningham Dax Collection explores the various forces at play when an artist makes a selfportrait. As the title suggests, this process involves an aspect of searching, a desire to find out more about oneself from both external and internal perspectives. This exhibition explores the tension between what is revealed and what is hidden by someone’s selfportrait. The Cunningham Dax Collection comprises over 15,000 artworks by people with experience of mental illness or trauma. ● Overlay: Printmaking in place, time and culture Susan Hall, Mary Ham, Patrice Mahoney, Miriam Potts and Karen Sandon . Community Access Gallery. 4 May 4 June. The artists in Overlay have drawn on different aspects of their environment, culture and history to produce works in response to their local places and perspectives. Using various printmaking techniques, they share stories and images from their position as women working collaboratively in a print studio. ● Laugh Out Loud . A Latrobe Regional Gallery exhibition. Curated by Fiona West and MariaLuisa Marino. 25 May – 15 September. Laugh Out Loud taps into an essential aspect of Australian identity, our sense of humour; a dry, laconic, self mockery, with a pinch of irony and anti authoritarianism. The works in this exhibition have been chosen for their immediacy and comic appeal. They have been brought together as a counterpoint to the all too familiar anxiety and fear prevalent in the many changing environments of contemporary life. Artists include Joanna Braithwaite, Jim Cooper, Rodney Forbes, Linda Marrinon, Kate Mitchell, Tim Moore, Tom Moore, Colin Suggett, collaborative duo Gregory & Watts and Julian Wolkenstein.● Opening hours: Mon to Fri 10am to 5pm, Sat & Sun 11am to 4pm. ‘Authentic’ and ‘timeless’ are two words that convey a lot of importance in the world of Americana country music. Being true to the values and aesthetics of one’s forebears in the rich lineage of the genre is a cherished trait, as important as possessing good songs and the players exhibiting a strong chemistry.

Now we welcome a duo from the sleepy Californian hamlet of Eagle Rock (no, not that Eagle Rock) who possess all of the above attributes in spades. The Milk Carton Kids – singers and guitarists Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan – peddle a brand of music as ‘authentic’ and ‘timeless’ as you could ever hope to hear, their voices and trademark vintage guitars meshing into one glorious single entity that seems to emit from a bygone era, as if they’d ploughed dustbowls with Guthrie and jumped trains with Kerouac to gather insight for their beautiful narratives. Their music is clearly of American heritage but equally hard to pin down, not seeming to be rooted in the fields of the north, the swamps of the Deep South, the deserts of Texas nor the mountains of Appalachia, yet somehow encompassing the distinctive virtues of each of these locales.

Despite being a relatively new venture – they only formed The Milk Carton Kids in 2011 – the pair have already released two acclaimed albums (2011’s Prologue and their brand new effort The Ash & Clay) and shared stages with acts such as Old Crow Medicine Show and K.D. Lang, as well as undertaking literally hundreds of their own headlining shows. Legendary director Gus Van Zandt chose three of their songs for his feature film Promised Land, trading heavily on their aura of nostalgia plus the rural values which liberally permeate their muse.

Now Australian audiences are going to experience the myriad pleasures of The Milk Carton Kids firsthand when the pair head southwards for their inaugural Australian visit this June, bringing a touch of both history and the future to appropriately ornate venues up and down the east coast. Find out for yourself why they’re rapidly becoming one of the hottest properties on the red hot Americana circuit, and get bragging rights for being the first on your block to get into the down home goodness of The Milk Carton Kids! ● Martha Wainwright Sunday June 16. Memorial Hall, Leongatha. Tickets: Members/Concession $55, adults $60: An evening of strength & vulnerability. Brooklyn based chanteuse Martha Wainwright will soon return to Australia to enchant fans on a national tour with her band! “…a grand, glowering gravitas – part Patti Smith, part Leonard Cohen” Uncut Magazine “…her stage presence suggests several things at one time defiant and strong, yet with an edge of sadness and vulnerability as well.” Spin Magazine “What she does better than any woman in current pop, is sing …such an untethered spirit that she writes words for that voice which are shamelessly lusty, confused and sometimes vengeful.” Independent UK 2012 live review. The wonderfully talented Martha Wainwright is heading to Australia with her trio for a national tour beginning late May 2013. Fresh from warmly received performances in Europe and North America, Martha will represent material from across her career to date – show stoppers from her emotionally charged debut album to her acclaimed tribute to Edith Piaf, and to Martha’s latest LP of original material, Come Home To Mama. Come Home… was coproduced by the highly regarded Yuka C. Honda of Cibo Matto, and displays the passionate angst of her 2005 eponymous debut coupled with the twisted pop of its follow up I Know Your’re Married… Yuka and Martha have created an edgy, multi instrumental soundscape that showcases Martha’s raw, confessional poetry with undeniable style and grace. It’s the kind of artistic depth which led Pitchfork Media to claim she is “taking music and wringing from it a startling wealth of shiverinducing moments.” While Popmatters.com goes so far as to say, “Martha Wainwright excels at both singing and songwriting, and earns herself a spot among this decade’s foremost performers.”

10

During the winter of 2009 and 2010, Martha gave birth to her first child and her mother passed away. Confronted with both joy and anger, the songs on Come Home To Mama are, at times, aggressive and forceful, but also the most reflective of Martha’s songs to date. Her set will no doubt include the album’s hauntingly beautiful “Proserpina”, the last song her mother Kate McGarrigle wrote before she died in January 2010. With a constantly changing timbre of depth, Martha Wainwright displays a remarkable polarity between songs of harrowing despair that also show a sense of spontaneity and playfulness. It is this striking mixture of light and shade and her ability to conceptualize, tackle and achieve dynamic arrangements that marry so beautifully with her heartfelt lyrics of remarkable candour and acrimonious humour. As Spin Magazine documented about her live performances: “…her stage presence suggests several things at one time defiant and strong, yet with an edge of sadness and vulnerability as well.” She can, within a single verse, play both angel and demon. Martha’s incredible, evocative and characterful voice will course its way through pop, soul, folk and torch. Make sure you secure your tickets for one of this very special evening of music. Be enlightened as Martha Wainwright swoops and soars. Don’t miss the work of an artist at the top of her game.

● Clairy Brown & The Bangin’ Rackettes. Sat. 20th July. Meeniyan Town Hall

B.Y.O Table seating. All ages. Tickets: $35, / $40 (includes all booking fees & GST)

Fresh off the back of a headline tour of the USA, Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Racketttes return to Australia to take their show back out on the road, with a string of dates across the country including performing at Splendour in the Grass on July 26.

2013 has already been a mammoth year for the band, following their prodigious success in the States over the last year – their debut album “Baby Caught the Bus” reached 66 on US iTunes charts and the single “Love Letter” featured in a hugely popular Heineken ad – the band signed to the prestigious US label, Vanguard in February and set off on a twentysix stop North American tour, with appearances on the Carson Daly Show, AXS TV and Balcony TV. Since then the arresting chanteuse and her ninepiece band have been leaving behind love letters and broken hearts from Alabama to Arizona.

But as they say nothing beats home turf so get set to have a serious reunion session with some new songs, a well oiled machine of a show with all the shimmery vocal harmonies, soul claps, choreography, horns and Clairy’s huge voice slapping you about the face!

Meeniyan ● moo’s at meeniyan Winery of the Month Lyre Bird Hill Winery & Guest House located in Koonwarra was a former greyhound racing track and the 15 acre property was purchased by Owen and Robyn Schmidt in 1986. A change of profession from Accountant to Vigneron was unfolding for Owen and Robyn has enjoyed the opportunity to facilitate her catering and hospitality expertise.

Pursuing a long time desire to make wine, Owen planted 1,000 grape cuttings of three varieties and undertook a course in viticulture at Charles Sturt University, Wagga.

The vineyard quickly developed to a small commercial size of 6 acres (8,000 vines). The collection of farm sheds used as the winery soon became inadequate and a 200 square metre winery with tasting and sales facilities was built in time for the 1993 vintage. Recent years has seen the addition of a temperature controlled barrel room, undercover work area and veranda with a wood fired pizza oven.

The area is most suited to the classic dry table wines and sparkling wines. Five white and three red wines are grown, vintaged and bottled on the property with the vineyard now at 8,500 vines. Contract winemaking is undertaken for a number of other wineries. Lyre Bird Hill wines have rapidly established an award winning reputation of consistent intensity and quality that is the result of Owen Schmidt's experience and understanding of viticulture and wine making in cool climates. Owen has chosen these two wines for us to enjoy in May: 2010 Late Picked Riesling – sweet white wine which nice passion fruit flavours and a lovely finish 2010 Shiraz – shows the classic black pepper flavours.
