For Immediate Release April 2015 Jason Isbell Returns FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE APRIL 2015 JASON ISBELL RETURNS WITH SOMETHING MORE THAN FREE ON JULY 17 VIA SOUTHEASTERN RECORDS FOUR NIGHT STAND AT HISTORIC RYMAN AUDITORIUM ANNOUNCED FOR OCTOBER 23 - 26 "…one of America’s thoroughbred songwriters, with a knack for rueful melodies and the kind of grainy blue-collar detail that pins a song in your mind.” – New York Times Magazine Nashville, TN – Acclaimed, award-winning artist Jason Isbell will release Something More Than Free, his highly anticipated fifth album, on July 17 via Southeastern Records. Something More Than Free features Isbell’s Southern- inspired vignettes of working class men, women and traditions that permeate these 11 new songs. The pure honesty and authenticity of Isbell’s poetic lyrics and soulful vocals have connected deeply with so many, and they shine as brightly as ever on Something More Than Free. Something More Than Free is Isbell’s most sonically diverse album to date. The opening track, “If It Takes A Lifetime” exudes a classic country tone, while “24 Frames” flows effortlessly with its easy, Laurel Canyon vibe. The wistful folk balladry of “Flagship”, along with the bluesy Southern rock timbre of “Palmetto Rose” and epic “Children Of Children” prove that Jason Isbell is an artist whose creative pinnacle has yet to be within sight. Something More Than Free is the follow up to Isbell’s 2013 celebrated breakthrough album Southeastern, which received overwhelming support from the press and went on to sell over 150,000 copies. Isbell was subject of stories in outlets ranging from The New York Times Magazine and Wall Street Journal to NPR’s All Things Considered and Fresh Air with Terry Gross (See Highlights). Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit made multiple television appearances, including The Late Show with David Letterman, Conan and Austin City Limits. Isbell won Artist of the Year, Song of the Year (“Cover Me Up”) and Album of the Year at the 2014 Americana Music Awards. Catch Jason and his wife Amanda Shires during a very special performance on The Late Show with David Letterman on April 24. Along with the media support, the success of Southeastern was the product of good old-fashioned hard work. Much like the working class subjects in his songs, Isbell grinded it out with his band The 400 Unit on the road. They toured extensively, made real connections with his audience, poured his heart out each night and stayed true to his convictions. Audiences grew as venue sizes expanded with sold out shows throughout the U.S. and Europe, including New York’s Beacon Theatre and three sold out nights at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium, where an unprecedented four-night stand has been announced for October 23-26. See tour dates below. Something More Than Free was recorded at the Sound Emporium in Nashville, TN and produced by Dave Cobb, who also produced Southeastern. Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

  • Dave Cobb Episode Transcript
VOICES IN THE HALL DAVE COBB EPISODE TRANSCRIPT PETER COOPER Welcome to Voices in the Hall, presented by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. I’m Peter Cooper. Today’s guest, producer extraordinaire Dave Cobb. DAVE COBB When we approach these records we approach it much the way a record would’ve been done in 1965, 1970. And it’s humans playing together. There are mistakes all over the record. There’s timing issues, there’s tuning issues, there’s pitch issues, there’s flubs of words. The same way people are seeking out organically grown food, I think people are seeking out organically grown music at the same time. The moment I heard Chris Stapleton I was like, “Man I’ve got to track him down.” If I can just get to Nashville I’d run into him and I’d run into Jason Isbell and try to sucker them in to make records. I like to fly by the seat of my pants. Walk in and see what’s going to grab you that day. To me it was a really cool thing about linking really great artists that I like now, and linking Nashville, what Nashville is today. Taking kind of a snapshot of it. And I love it when I get to introduce somebody to somebody else I think is talented. And you see there eyes both sparkle. And I love the unity in the scene. That’s why I moved here. PETER COOPER It’s Voices in the Hall, with Dave Cobb. “4th of July” - Shooter Jennings (Black Magick / Universal South) PETER COOPER “Fourth of July,” from Shooter Jennings.

  • Jason Isbell's "Anxiety" Is Such a Lonely Tune
By Lloyd Sachs Even more than (forgive the comparison) Billy Joel's "Honesty," Jason Isbell's "Anxiety" is such a lonely tune. Nuzzled against his lover, the song's first-person narrator seems free of serious relationship worries. But the world around him – the Trumpian world, that is, in all its rotten injustices and imbalances – has him feeling like he's trapped in a bad fantasy. "I'm wide awake and I'm in pain," he sings. If there's a word that best reflects Isbell's state of being these days, though, it's consistency. As has been widely reported and won't be rehashed here, he suffered through times of great tumult and inconsistency as a result of serious substance abuse – so serious it got him kicked out of Drive-By Truckers a decade ago, capping a six-year stint with the great Southern rock band. Now, having straightened himself out in impressive fashion, he's a model of dependability, priding himself on his ability to go out night after night with his 400 Unit and deliver a memorable show. The 38-year-old native of rural Alabama, who has always considered himself a guitar player "first and foremost," also is also proud of his continued growth as an instrumentalist. So it was a dream come true last July – a "huge event," as he put it – when Martin Guitar unveiled the Jason Isbell Signature Edition D-18. Isbell thrilled to the moment not only because Martin has been so admired over so many years – hello, consistency – but also because his association with the company brought him back full circle to his earliest days as a guitarist.

  • David Wax Museum Jason Isbell Tommy Castro & The
DAVID WAX MUSEUM GUESTHOUSE MARK OF THE LEOPARD Entering a self-described Technicolor world, David Wax Museum’s new album, Guesthouse, melds the band s strong acoustic sound with synthesizers, layers of percussion, and adventurous sonic processing. Guesthouse captures the rock energy of the band’s live show, which has topped best of lists at Newport Folk and SXSW. Guesthouse showcases frontman David Wax’s most direct and personal songwriting to date, which isn’t surprising given that since the last album over three years ago, he’s married his band’s co-creator Suz Slezak and the two have started their own family with the arrival of daughter Calliope (named after the Greek muse of epic poetry). Thematically, the album celebrates the changing circumstances of life and paints a brilliant picture of how the stakes have been raised a sentiment that has had a huge impact on how the band makes decisions. JASON ISBELL SOMETHING MORE THAN FREE THIRTY TIGERS The personal story surrounding Jason Isbell’s last, breakthrough album, Southeastern, is widely known and easily reprised. A troubled young troubadour, newly married, stepped away from the darkness of addiction into a new, uncertain life of clarity and commitment, reflecting ruefully on his hard won victories and the price he paid attaining them. It was an album of aching elegance, marked by the sort of lyrical precision that brought to mind certain literary masters of the melancholy American scene, from Flannery O’Connor to Raymond Carver – an album of memorably infectious empathy. With Something More Than Free, he stretches himself further, greatly expanding the boundaries of Isbell country, that territory of the heart and mind where people strive against their imperfections, and simultaneously against their circumstances, in a landscape that’s often unfriendly to their hopes.

  • JASON ISBELL and the 400 UNIT the Nashville Sound
JASON ISBELL AND THE 400 UNIT The Nashville Sound Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit’s new album, The Nashville Sound, is a beautiful piece of American music-making, but watch yourself: it will light a fire under your ass. “You’re still breathing, it’s not too late,” Jason sings. This album is a call, and the songs on it send sparks flying into a culture that’s already running so hot the needle on the temperature gauge is bouncing erratically in the red. And while it’s understandable that, in this moment, some people want their radio to help them drift away, this finely calibrated set of ten songs is aimed right between the clear eyes of people who prefer to stay present and awake. It’s a call to those who won't cower no matter how erratically the world turns, and who aren’t afraid of what looks back when they look in the mirror. Bruce Springsteen did that. Neil Young did that. Jason Isbell does that. There are songs on this album that cut to the chase. “Last year was a son of a bitch for nearly everyone we know,” Isbell sings on the album’s first single, “Hope the High Road.” “But I ain’t fighting with you down in the ditch. I’ll meet you up here on the road.” As singular as that lyric is, there’s nothing coy or obtuse about it. Meanwhile, other songs here take a subtler tack. Check out track three, “Tupelo.” It plays like a warm ode to Northeast Mississippi—on the first few listens, it sure sounds like a loving tribute—but on the fourth you realize that the town the protagonist is extolling is actually a blazing hellhole.
