Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Fauna Conservation Department Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden 29 June 2010 Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden Publication Series: No 6 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve moth survey 2009 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Executive Summary The objective of this survey was to generate a moth species list for the Butterfly Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest [SSSI] at Fung Yuen, Tai Po, Hong Kong. The survey came about following a request from Tai Po Environmental Association. Recording, using ultraviolet light sources and live traps in four sub-sites, took place on the evenings of 24 April and 16 October 2009. In total, 825 moths representing 352 species were recorded. Of the species recorded, 3 meet IUCN Red List criteria for threatened species in one of the three main categories “Critically Endangered” (one species), “Endangered” (one species) and “Vulnerable” (one species” and a further 13 species meet “Near Threatened” criteria. Twelve of the species recorded are currently only known from Hong Kong, all are within one of the four IUCN threatened or near threatened categories listed. Seven species are recorded from Hong Kong for the first time. The moth assemblages recorded are typical of human disturbed forest, feng shui woods and orchards, with a relatively low Geometridae component, and includes a small number of species normally associated with agriculture and open habitats that were found in the SSSI site. Comparisons showed that each sub-site had a substantially different assemblage of species, thus the site as a whole should retain the mosaic of micro-habitats in order to maintain the high moth species richness observed. -

During the present study, a total of 675 moth specimens were collected from the study area which represented 112 species from 16 families and eight super families. Though much of the species has been reported earlier from other parts of India, 15 species were first records for the state of Kerala. The highest species richness was shown by the family Erebidae and the least by the families Lasiocampidae, Uraniidae, Notodontidae, Pyralidae, Yponomeutidae, Zygaenidae and Hepialidae with one species each. The results of this preliminary study are promising; it sheds light on the unknown biodiversity of Vagamon hills which needs to be strengthened through comprehensive future surveys. April 2006 Eine neue Calpenia-Art aus China (Lepidoptera, Arctiidae) Thomas WITT und Wolfgang SPEIDEL Zusammenfassung Die neue Art Calpenia siniaevi sp. nov. wird aus der chinesischen Provinz Jiangxi beschrieben und von der nahe verwandten Calpenia takamukui MATSUMURA, 1930 aus Taiwan abgegrenzt. Die Falter beider Arten werden zusammen mit den Genitalien und Coremata vergleichend abgebildet. Abstract The new species Calpenia siniaevi sp. nov. is described from the chinese province Jiangxi and differentiated from the nearly allied Calpenia takamukui MATSUMURA, 1930 from Taiwan. The moths of both species are comparatively illustrated together with the genitalia and coremata. The present paper reports on the author's participation in a non-entomological mini-expedition during January 1977 across those two countries, with comments on the areas where collecting was possible and practiced by him as a serious amateur lepidopterist. In addition there are photos of some interesting landscapes and, last but not least, a complete list of all the species captured and noted. RESUME.- En pleine Afrique equatoriale, a cheval sur 1'Equateur, le Kenya et la Tanzanie possedent une faune de Lepidopteres extraordinairement riche (871 especes seulement pour les Rhopaloceres et Hesperiides du Kenya, selon le tout recent ouvrage de Larsen). La presente note relate une mini-expedition non specifiquement entomologique en Janvier 1977 a travers ces deux pays, avec commmentaires de 1'auteur, lepidopteriste amateur eclaire, sur les lieux ou il a eu la possibilite de collectionner, recit agremente de quelques photos de biotopes interessants et surtout avec la liste complete des especes capturees et notees. Abstract: Macrobrochis gigas (Erebidae, Arctiinae, Lithosini) is among the less studied moths found in southern and southeastern Asia. Here, we report an unusual mass aggregation of adult M. gigas from southern India, where large swarms of the species were seen feeding on nectar of Terminalia paniculata (Combretaceae) flowers. This note also presents observations on the aggregation and feeding behavior of M. gigas caterpillars. Majuro Atoll THE VASCULAR PLANTS OF MAJURO ATOLL, REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS ABSTRACT Majuro Atoll has been a center of activity for the Marshall Islands since 1944 and is now the major population center and port of entry for the country. Previous to the accompanying study, no thorough documentation has been made of the vascular plants of Majuro Atoll. There were only reports that were either part of much larger discussions on the entire Micronesian region or the Marshall Islands as a whole, and were of a very limited scope. Previous reports by Fosberg, Sachet & Oliver (1979, 1982, 1987) presented only 115 vascular plants on Majuro Atoll. In this study, 563 vascular plants have been recorded on Majuro. INTRODUCTION The accompanying report presents a complete flora of Majuro Atoll, which has never been done before. It includes a listing of all species, notation as to origin (i.e. indigenous, aboriginal introduction, recent introduction), as well as the original range of each. The major synonyms are also listed. For almost all, English common names are presented. Marshallese names are given, where these were found, and spelled according to the current spelling system, aside from limitations in diacritic markings. A brief notation of location is given for many of the species. The entire list of 563 plants is provided to give the people a means of gaining a better understanding of the nature of the plants of Majuro Atoll.
