Updated on August 19, 2009, this fact sheet provides information on the FIVB and the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour. The 2009 women’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour started in April at Brasília and will conclude at the start of November in Phuket, Thailand. The US$380,000 PAF Open is the 10th of 12 double gender events to be staged on the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour. For more information regarding the SWATCH FIVB World Tour, please visit www.fivb.org. · After a year's hiatus, the SWATCH FIVB World Tour returns to 2009 international Beach Volleyball calendar as the PAF Open will be staged in Mariehamn on the Åland Islands. The PAF Open marks the second time that the Finnish and Swedish Volleyball federations have joined forces to stage a SWATCH FIVB World Tour event with the first being in 2007 when teams from Brazil captured the gold medals. Åland is an archipelago and has 25,000 permanent residents and attracts more than 2- million visitors annually. Åland also features the most sunshine hours in the entire Nordic region. · The PAF Open for men starts August 17 and concludes August 23 at the Östra Utfarten in front of the Hotell Arkipelag. Here are 2009 SWATCH SWATCH FIVB World Tour highlights. · The total prize money for 2009 is US$7.2-million. · The calendar features 18 sites in 15 countries within three FIVB confederations (Asia, Europe and South America). · The 2009 calendar includes 12 double gender events. · Italy (Rome) and Poland (Myslowice) have hosted men’s only events. · Japan (Osaka), Korea (Seoul), Spain (Barcelona) and Thailand (Phuket) have hosted or will stage women’s only events. · The 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Championships were held June 25-July 5 in Stavanger, Norway. It marked the fifth-time that a European country has hosted the event. · The 2009 calendar includes four SWATCH-FIVB World Tour Grand Slam events with total prize money of $2.4-million. The Swiss Alps village of Gstaad, which hosted the 2007 SWATCH FIVB World Championships, was the first Grand Slam event followed by stops in , Marseille and Klagenfurt. · The 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar lists three new sites, including Brasília (Brazil), Rome (Italy) and The Hague (Netherlands). · The Finnish event in Aland returns to the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar after not being held in 2008 due to the Beijing Olympic Games. · Myslowice hosted a men’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour stop in 2009 after staging a women’s event in 2008. · Barcelona will host a women’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour in 2009 after staging a double gender stop in 2008. · The FIVB will sanction two world championships for players under the age of 21. England will host the ninth annual SWATCH FIVB Junior World Championships for players under the age of 21 in Blackpool September 16-20. Turkey will host the eighth edition of the SWATCH FIVB Youth World Championships for players under the age of 19 in Alanya August 19-23.
