 Plavins and Smedins are the second Latvian team to appear in a SWATCH FIVB World Tour semi-final in the 24-year history of the international Beach Volleyball circuit.  and Ruslans Sorokins were the first Latvian men’s or women’s team to reach a SWATCH FIVB World Tour “final four” and the first to play in a gold medal match at the 2009 Norwegian event in Kristiansand.  Plavins and Smedins placed fourth last weekend at a European Challenger/Satellite event in Bulgaria. · Plavins placed ninth at the 2008 Olympic Games where he and Aleksandrs Samoilovs upset eventual gold medal winners Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers of the United States in the first-round.. · Plavins and Samoilovs captured the gold medal at the 2005 SWATCH FIVB Junior World Championships for players under the age of 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. · Plavins and Samoilovs best finishes on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour fifths at a 2007 event in Roseto degli Abruzzi and 2008 on Barcelona. · Prior to the World Series 13, Smedins best SWATCH placements was an ninth with Plavins at the Norwegian Grand Slam earlier this month in Stavanger. · Smedins will turn 23 next Saturday. · Smedins and his older brother (Toms) placed third at the 2004 FIVB under 18 world championships in Termoli, Italy. · The Smedins placed fourth at the 2006 FIVB under 21 world championships in Myslowice, Poland.  Gosch and Horst are in the midst of their fourth full-season together on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour event.  Gosch and Horst placed fifth at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.  The pairs first event together was in October 2006 at a Mexican event in Acapulco where the Austrians qualified for the Main Draw, but had to forfeit both of their “money” round matches due to injuries.  Gosch and Horst have now qualified for three SWATCH FIVB World Tour semi-finals with the last being in the first event after the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games were the Austrians placed fourth.  Gosch and Horst secured a bronze medal at the 2007 SWATCH stop on the Finnish Isle of Aland.  Gosch has been playing full-time on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour since 2003.  Gosch was a 2004 Olympian when he replaced Clemens Doppler as Nikolas Berger’s partner in Athens.  Gosch and Alexander Huber won a 2006 FIVB Challenger event Cagliari, Italy  Horst has been playing full-time on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour since 2007.  Prior to playing with Gosch, Horst teamed with Sebastian Goettlinger to place ninth in the Austrian Grand Slam in 2006.  Wu and Xu posted 13th-, ninth- and ninth-place finishes in their first three events in 2010 before winning China’s first-ever men’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal last month in Moscow.  Wu and Xu entered Marseille after posting a 25th in their last SWATCH FIVB World Tour event in Gstaad, Switzerland. It was their lowest finish since placing 25th at the 2006 Gstaad event.  Wu and Xu played in only one event in 2009 due to the Chinese National Games as the pair placed second in the season finale in Sanya, China, where they dropped the finale to Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil of The Netherlands.  Wu and Xu last event together prior to the Sanya Open was at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games where they place ninth after being eliminated 21-15 and 21-18 in 41 minutes by David Klemperer and Eric Koreng of Germany.  Wu and Xu are the only Chinese men’s team to medal on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour since the start of the international circuit in 1987.  Wu and Xu are the only Chinese men’s team to play in a SWATCH gold medal match with five appearances together in 2008 in Australia, China, Croatia, Russia and France.  Wu and Xu claimed China’s first-ever men’s medal by capturing the bronze at the 2006 Poland stop with a third-place win over Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes of Brazil.  Wu and Xu rank 20th on the all-time FIVB earnings list with US$522,500.  For their FIVB careers, Wu is competing in his 65th SWATCH stop with $274,675 in earnings to rank 49th.  Xu is playing in his 74th international event with $295,325 in winnings to rank 43rd all-time.  Xu tied with Russia’s Dmitri Barsouk as the SWATCH FIVB World Tour’s most improved players in 2007.
