Ishmael Beah - "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier" - New York Times Page 1 of 16 January 14, 2007 The Making, and Unmaking, of a Child Soldier By ISHMAEL BEAH Sometimes I feel that living in New York City, having a good family and friends, and just being alive is a dream, that perhaps this second life of mine isn’t really happening. Whenever I speak at the United Nations, Unicef or elsewhere to raise awareness of the continual and rampant recruitment of children in wars around the world, I come to realize that I still do not fully understand how I could have possibly survived the civil war in my country, Sierra Leone. Most of my friends, after meeting the woman whom I think of as my new mother, a Brooklyn- born white Jewish-American, assume that I was either adopted at a very young age or that my mother married an African man. They would never imagine that I was 17 when I came to live with her and that I had been a child soldier and participated in one of the most brutal wars in recent history. In early 1993, when I was 12, I was separated from my family as the Sierra Leone civil war, which began two years earlier, came into my life. The rebel army, known as the Revolutionary United Front (R.U.F.), attacked my town in the southern part of the country. I ran away, along paths and roads that were littered with dead bodies, some mutilated in ways so horrible that looking at them left a permanent scar on my memory. -

The issue of child soldiers is a worldwide phenomenon. However, it is more noticeable in developing nations where the lack of adequate social infrastructure and socio-economic programmes threatens the developmental needs of these children. Abstract Protectionist frames of children as passive, uncomprehending victims characterize the international architecture of responding to children in war. However, stories such as those in children’s war memoirs draw attention to the agency and capacity of children to negotiate and navigate distinct traumas and experiences in war. Children experience particular vulnerabilities and risks in conflict zones and their potential as contributors to the solutions to war must also be taken seriously. Children’s authoritative voices in memoir writing reveal the limitations of protectionist- dominated approaches and offer a rationale for taking the participatory elements of international humanitarian mechanisms and responses to conflict more seriously. Such a move may help address the comprehensive silencing of children’svoicesinthe institutional architecture concerned with children in war. © icrc 2020 459 H. Thomas Wendorf, Ph.D. African Ex-Child Soldier Memoirs to some extent have been viewed as humanitarian texts that raise sympathy or even funds from readers to enhance child rights initiatives. Such initiatives have been noble and worthy. However, my literary analysis research goes beyond the humanitarian reception, to examine how the use of the child’s voice functions as a narrative critique of a distorted adult world. Exploring Ishmael Beah’s A Long Way Gone and Senait Mehari’s Heart of Fire, I examine how these authors employ a blend of aesthetic invention, remembered and experienced history inherent in the child’s voice within their narratives. My interpretive work involves tracing the political, social and economic histories of authors’ native spaces; examining functions and effects of child narrators; and understanding memory reconstruction paradigms and the functions of storytelling in confronting trauma. -

Child insurgents in West Africa: The Boko Haram example In Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon MOSES JOSEPH YAKUBU University of Benin Nigeria [email protected] Abstract One of the most shocking horrors of Boko Haram’s rampage in West Africa has been the insurgents’ ability to turn captured boys and girls into destroyers and killers. Since 2014, Boko Haram group has used hundreds of young boys and girls to terrorize north-east Nigeria and some of her northern neighbours such as Niger, Cameroon and Chad. A critical aspect of neglect in available materials on this subject is the inadequate presentation and documentation of child insurgents in Boko Haram insurgency. This study examines children’s involvement in Boko Haram insurgency. Specifically it discusses the implications of child insurgents on national development. Keywords: Boko Haram, child insurgent, Cameroon, development, insurgency, Niger, Nigeria. Introduction The involvement of children in war is a disturbing social and political phenomenon. It is a universal problem with adverse security and developmental implications in West Africa. In the 1990s and 2000s, most of the wars in Africa such as Sierra Leone, Liberia, Sudan Angola, Cote d’Ivoire and Burundi were not without children. Children under the age of 18 were coerced, manipulated and recruited into fighting forces. Despite the protection of the International Convention and Customary International Laws over children, this underaged group is still widely used in armed conflict. The most worrisome is the recent phenomenon of child insurgents in the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon. Since 2014, the use of child insurgents within the selected countries has been on the increase.1 Young boys and girls have been recruited into Boko Haram terrorist group and are designated both destructive and non-destructive roles. -

It combines anecdotal evidence and quantitative data from various armed conflicts within the past 50 years to reveal how sexism and gendered conceptions of war influence all aspects of the experience of women and girl combatants. Ishmael Beah Ishmael Beah was born in Sierra Leone. He is the "New York Times" bestselling author of "A Long Way Gone, Memoirs of a Boy Soldier". His work has appeared in the "New York Times Magazine", "Vespertine Press", "LIT" and "Parabola" magazines. He is a UNICEF advocate for Children Affected by War and a member of the Human Rights Watch Children’s Advisory Committee. He is a graduate of Oberlin College, Ohio with a B.A in Political Science. FLYING WITH ONE WING By Ishmael Beah It was the first time she had seen her father weep. His body trembled as he walked onto a piece of land that was now consumed by grass. A tall cement pillar still stood on the far end of the land, bearing residues of smoke, rain, dust, and scars from sharp metals that had left visible holes of dark moments. He looked back at his daughter and managed to conjure a smile. He kicked in the grass to reveal some part of the remaining foundation. “This is where I use to sit, this was my classroom.” He placed his fingers on the ground. “This was my school. I can still hear our voices reciting the alphabet, greeting our teacher, ‘good morning Mr. Kanagbole.’ and running outside during break, screaming our desired positions for the football match that we played everyday.” He continued and sat on the ground. His daughter sat next to him. She was accompanying her father back to his home where he had always said the core of his heart still lived.
