All Together – Edition 116 Friday 25th September 2020 iPads gifted at St Julia’s Hospice – read more in this edition of All Together. Covid and flu – an update Our introduction today comes from Gina Starnes and Ally Hardman; There’s been a lot of change since the last edition of All Together and it’s hard to know where to start! The most important news has been the changes made by the Government in response to the increasing Covid statistics in the UK. You’ll have seen that the Coronavirus alert level is moving back up to 4 (from 3), pubs and restaurants are closing at 10pm from this week and we’re all been asked to maintain social distancing. It looks very much like we’re entering into the second spike and as a result, we must be increasingly vigilant and continue with the mantra “Hands. Face. Space.” There’s more about it here: https://coronavirusresources.phe.gov.uk/Hands-Face- Space-/resources/additional-social-media/ In order to try and plan ongoing services and to ensure that all staff are able to work safely, there’ll be a risk assessment circulated to all staff via your managers. We ask that you complete it as thoroughly as you can. The assessment asks for some personal health information and we assure you this will be treated as strictly confidential and will be used to work out your ‘Covid age’. Please return these completed assessments via the secure e-mail address that’s listed at the top of the form. Your answers will then be reviewed and assessed alongside suitability for your place of work during any increase in local Covid spikes.

  • Launceston-And-Districts-Fallen-From-Both-World-Wars..Pdf
This is not a complete record of all those that fell during the two wars, with some of the fallen having no information available whatsoever. However there are 222 names from within the district that I have been able to provide a narrative for and this booklet hopefully will provide a lasting memory for future generations to view and understand the lives behind the names on the various memorials around Launceston. It has not been easy piecing together the fragments of information particularly from the first world war where many records were destroyed in the blitz of the second world war, but there are many resources now available that do make the research a little easier. Hopefully over time the information that is lack- ing in making this a complete story will be discovered and I can bring all the re- cords up to date. Of course there have been many people that have helped and I would like to thank Peter Bailey, Claudine Malaquin, Dennis Middleton, Jim Edwards, Martin Kel- land, Grant Lethbridge Morris and Michael Willis for their invaluable help in compiling this homage plus the resources that are freely available at Launceston Library. My hope is that the people will find this a fascinating story to all these souls that bravely gave their lives in the service of their country and that when we come to remember them at the various remembrance services, we will actually know who they were. Roger Pyke 28th of October 2014. Launceston’s Fallen from World War One William Henry ADAMS William was born in 1886 at 14 Hillpark Cottages, Launceston to Richard and Jane Adams.

  • Application on Behalf of Cornwall Council and Caradon Observatory for Bodmin Moor to Be Considered As an International Dark Sky Landscape
1 Executive Summary Bodmin Moor is a special place. Amongst the many environmental designations ranging from the international to the local, Bodmin Moor forms part of an Area of Outstanding Beauty. This means it benefits from the same planning status and protection as English National Parks. Visitors are already drawn to the dramatic panoramas, varied wildlife and intriguing history, with those already in the know also appreciating and learning about the stars in the exceptionally dark night sky. Caradon Observatory readings taken in and around Bodmin Moor quantify the remarkable quality of the sky’s darkness and correspond with the findings of the Campaign to Protect Rural England Night Blight study. The results show that even around the villages there are impressive views of the night sky. There is considerable support from the public and stakeholder organisations for the establishment of Bodmin Moor as an International Dark Sky Landscape with “Park” status. Feedback from residents, businesses, landowners, farmers, astronomers, educators, environmental bodies and other statutory and charitable organisations has helped shape the proposals. Enthusiasm is such that there have already been calls to widen the buffer zone if the designation is successful. The alternative title for the designation stems from local feedback and reflects the AONB status. Bodmin Moor comprises a varied moorland landscape with a few small villages and hamlets so there is very little artificial light. Nevertheless, steps have been taken and are continuing to be made to reduce light pollution, particularly from streets. This means that the vast majority of lighting is sensitive to the dark night sky and is becoming even more sympathetic.
