Edinburgh County Newsletter May 2013 www.girlguiding-edinburgh.org.uk Discovering Abercorn Division Abercorn Division is situated in East Edinburgh, and covers Portobello, Craigentinny, Duddingston and Niddrie. In Abercorn we like to do things a little bit differently from the other Divisions in that the division is split into sections (Rainbows, Brownies and Guides) rather than into Districts. We have recently seen a few leaders retire from their Guiding roles within the Division whose experience, expertise and knowledge will be greatly missed by Leaders and girls alike. We currently have 8 Rainbow Units (Craigentinny District). Over the last year we have been able to reopen 2 units which had previously closed for various reasons and have opened a new unit in Richmond Church where the Chaplin of Girl Guiding Edinburgh is the minister. The Rainbows like to be kept busy going around the rainbow roundabout and getting their Pot of Gold when they move up to Brownies. There are currently 7 Brownie Units (Duddingston District) in the Division, sadly even although some Brownie units have large waiting lists, 2 Brownie units have needed to close recently due to a lack of girls, but with the 3 new rainbow units running it is hoped that these Brownie units will be reopened at some point. The Brownies love adventures, like to gain badges, go on outings and love Pack Holidays. They are gearing up to their Big Brownie Birthday Celebrations at the start of 2014. This leaves us with the 5 Guide Units (Portobello District). The Guides like gaining GFIs and badges. Summer 2012, saw a group of Guides and leaders head off on an International Trip to Austria. They enjoyed the fundraising for the trip, the long journey and the adventure whilst they were there so much that summer 2013 sees another international trip this time to Switzerland. 1 A Senior Section unit has recently been started in Abercorn Division which is a great resource to the girls within the Division who have gained their Baden Powell award at Guides. It is hoped that the girls will be encouraged to continue their Guiding Journey and achieve their Young Leader Qualification along with other awards such as their Queens Guide award and we recognise that the girls are our future leaders. As well as the leaders keeping the girls busy, the leaders in Abercorn like to keep busy too, we have a few leaders finishing off the Adult Leadership Qualifications and some just starting out on their ALQ journey. We also have leaders who have achieved or are working towards other qualifications; their Large Scale Licence, Pack Holiday Licence and International trip licence to name but a few. Like most Divisions we have large waiting lists particularly for Rainbows and Brownies. We recognise we need more leaders to grow our existing or open new units. If you know of anyone who might be interested in helping us to grow then please register your interest by using this link http://www.girlguiding.org.uk/get_involved/volunteer/register_your_interest.aspx Grass mowing Do you know anyone who might be interested in mowing the grass at Trefoil campsite on a regular basis?
