The Tigers are looking to rebound from a disappointing 4-7 season. The record was made even more disappointing because, at times, the defense played well enough to keep the Tigers in most games but there was real difficulty in scoring points when the offense got close to the goalline. The result was only 151 points scored, lowest since 2006 (year 1 of the program). The Tigers settled for field goals 8 times, none more than 29 yards. Fishers was able to the ball effectively at times with a solid offensive line and experience and talent at the RB position, but running the ball became more difficult because of an ineffective passing game. The defense was not without its issues as well as the Tigers often found themselves giving up 3rd and long situations to avoid getting off the field. If the Tigers are to compete for a championship this year, these issues must be addressed and corrected. Despite the 4-7 season, there are several seniors who the Tigers are going to need to replace and will be missed. Defensively, All-State football players Emmanuel Davis (University of St. Francis) and Roman Molden (Marian University) will leave big holes. Davis was a 3-year starter, a 2-year All HCC LB, and FHS Co-Most Valuable Defensive Player in 2018. Molden was a 2-year starter at SS, an All HCC defensive back, and the FHS Mental Attitude Award winner in 2019. Also in the secondary CBs Jason Lassic (25 solos, 9 assists, 1 intercept., 6 PBU) and Michael Longo (13 solos, 8 assists, 8 PBU) graduate. On the defensive line, Christian Miles (Trine University) had a very good year for the Tigers collecting 16 solos, 15 assists, a sack and an interception. Cam Field, a starter at defensive end, will also be missed. Offensively, the Tigers lost QB Jon Vore to injury very early in the season and never really found the answer to solid QB play for the remainder of the season. Jon will attend Butler on a scholarship. 2-time All HCC WR Collin Statz, a 3-starter, finishes his career w/ 84 receptions, good enough for 4th in FHS history. Collin, despite the QB troubles, still managed to haul in 34 passes for 500 yards in 2018 and was voted the FHS Most Valuable Offensive Player. RB HL Lewis (Purdue Walk-on), although hampered by injuries throughout his career, was certainly a talent that will be missed. 3-year starters in the offensive line who the Tigers will need to replace are Nathan Pairitz (Wabash College) and Andrew Voskuhl. Pairitz was named the team’s Most Valuable Lineman. Also part- time starters in the OL including Albie Weir and Zach Smith will be missed. All 3 TEs who saw playing time have graduated including Jack Freeh, Jonah Dunnuck, and AJ Rivera (Franklin College). WR/PR Josh Jackson wan named Co-Most Valuable Special Teams Player for his contributions as a returner. The Tigers also had 8 seniors who excelled in the classroom as well as on the field by being named to the IFCA Academic All-State Team including WR Nick Cohoon, DE Sal Cohoon, RB HL Lewis, DB Michael Longo, DB Jonathan Nolting, WR Mason McCartney, OL Nathan Pairitz, OL Zach Smith, and WR Collin Statz. Despite the losses, the Tigers will rebuild around 27 returning lettermen which includes 8 defensive returning starters, 5 offensive returning starters, and some key returning special teams performers. Heading the list of returners are IFCA Junior All-State LB Geoffrey Brown and 3-year starter at OT Jonah VanDer Kamp (All HCC Honorable Mention). Brown will be a 3-year starter at LB and was an All HCC selection as a junior. VanDer Kamp, just a junior, started 10 games as a freshman and all 11 games as a sophomore. Both players are attracting Division 1 interest from numerous universities. The strength of the offense appears to be in the offensive line where the Tigers return 3 players who are expected to become 3-year starters. In addition to VanDer Kamp (6’6” 305, 17 ½ Pancakes), the OL returns senior OT Ethan Dye (6’3” 245, 20 Pancakes) and senior C Hayden Tobias (6’3” 260, 14 ½ Pancakes). Both can play OG if necessary, depending on who else works in as starters. Top contenders to earn playing time include junior OG Maximus Kohne (6’3” 285), senior OT Wyatt Puff (6’4” 240), junior C-OG Grant Stanley (6’3” 240), and junior OT Chris Jensvold (6’3” 235). Juniors Andrew Pleva (6’0” 220) and Hunter Reid (6’4” 235) as well as Sophomores Jaxon Hyatt (5’11” 245) and Matt Brewer (6’3” 235) will compete to earn a spot in the OL 2-deep. Tight End is a position where we have some youth that is going to need to grow up fast, but there is talent at the position. Top TEs are junior Caleb Gates (6’4” 215) who was injured early in the year after showing he was going to be capable of playing at a varsity level last year. Also junior Silas Martin (6’5” 230) and sophomore Greer DeSabatine (6’2” 210) look to have bright futures as TEs. Two seniors, Colton Keel (6’0” 190) and Jack Boatman (6’1” 180) will also get opportunities compete for playing time. The most experienced offensive skill position is the running back position where Fishers will return 2 RBs who started games in 2018 and some younger RBs who will bring depth to the position. Senior Dylan Scally (5’7” 170) rushed for 645 yards in 2018 and over 300 yards as a sophomore in 2017 returns as a starter in numerous games over the past 2 years. Senior Matt Noble (5’8” 185), who rushed for 250 yards last year on just 48 carries (5.2 ypc), came on late in the year to show he is very capable. Junior Shaun Kim (5’11” 180) and sophomore Dominic Oliverio (6’0” 180) will provide depth to make this position a solid group on this team. When the Tigers choose to use a fullback, 2 players will vie for playing time including senior Adam Norton (5’9” 215) and junior Ian Willoughby (6’0” 190). The wide receiver position, however, returns very little experience. Senior Nick Leath (6’2” 180) is the leading returning receiver with just 4 catches in 2018. Senior Reece Boland (5’10” 160) and sophomore Jeffrey Simmons (6’5” 195) are the only other players to catch passes in 2018. Other newcomers who have displayed some talent include junior Reggie Cook (5’9” 140), senior Kristian Jones (5’9” 150), junior Andrew Colsten (5’10” 155) and sophomore Collin McPeek. Simmons was a freshmen last year who was moved to the varsity about mid-year and showed strong signs of being an excellent receiver threat, but an injury cut short the football season; However, he the basketball court to become a starter for the program and earned All-HCC honors. It is a talented group of receivers but determining who is going to pull the trigger at the QB position will have a lot to do with the success of the offense. Taking over the QB position after Vore’s injury last season was Marcus Roux (6’2” 175), now a senior, who struggled as a passer at times (49 or 123, 40%, 595 yds, 7 int, 3 TDs) but showed some progress late in the year. Junior Lucas Prewitt (6’3” 210) started 2 games last year as well completing just 16 of 51 passes (31 %, 282 yds, 0 TDs, 0 Int). Junior Eddy Ebanks III (6’0” 175) showed progress after transferring in the summer. Another prospect will be senior Collin Shelton (6’1” 185) who has been a 2-year starter at DB. Collin has not played QB since he was a freshman because of a shoulder injury as a sophomore that prevented him from throwing but allowed him to play defense. He is a good athlete and leader who will be given an opportunity to see what he can do. One of the QBs will need to separate himself as a leader and efficient performer to get the Tiger offense on track. On defense the Tigers return one of the top inside linebackers in Indiana in Geoffrey Brown (6’2” 220). Brown set school records last year in solo tackles (88) and fumble recoveries (7). He also had 16 TFL (-69 yds) and 5 sacks. Joining him at LB are 2 juniors who both started multiple games last year: Matt Hohlt (6’2” 185) had 19 solos and 8 assists and Billy Reiter (5’11” 190) accounted for 29 solos and 6 assists. Senior Brandon Benbow (5’11” 190) is a returning letterman who has also seen playing time and expects to challenge for a starting position. In the defensive front, Fishers returns two starters from a year ago in senior DE Alex Lemaich (6’1” 200) and senior DT Josh Ibey (6’0” 220). Lemaich was 4th on the team in tackles with 34 solos, 11 assists, 9 TFL (-37), 2 sacks, and 2 PBU. Ibey played both DE and DT and recorded 12 solos, 7 assists, and 2 sacks. Others who will challenge for playing time on the defensive line include senior DT Collin Worley (5’10” 235, 12 solos, 10 assists, 1 sack), senior DT Trevor Whitney (5’9” 235), and junior DT David Dilley (6’1” 235). Two players are making position changes to help the team and give them a better chance of getting on the field. Juniors Joel Coston (6’1” 210) and Ian Willoughby (6’1” 190) will bring a competitive edge to the defensive end position. Also expect sophomore DT Andre Glover (5’9” 220) to develop into a player who could see the field. The secondary returns 2 safeties with experience as starters. Collin Shelton (6’1” 185) has started multiple games over the past two years but injuries have prevented him from finishing both seasons. In 2 shortened seasons Collin has accounted for 20 solos, 15 assists, 1 interception, 2 PBU, and 2 fumble recoveries. Junior Seth Dunnuck (6’1” 170) moved into the starting safety spot when Shelton was injured last year and performed well accounting for 22 solos, 6 assists, a forced fumble, and 1 interception with a 31 yard return. Also returning as a part-time starter in the secondary is senior CB Jackson Dunn (6’0” 170) who collected 14 solos, 6 assists, 2 PBUs, and an interception for a 31 yard return. Senior safety Grant Whetsel (5’10” 180) returns after being unable to play last year because of an injury but returned to the this past spring and expects to find a way on to the football field as well. Junior Shaun Kim (5’11” 180) will split time between RB and CB to bring athleticism and toughness to that position, and junior Bobby Fox (5’11” 155) will compete for an opportunity to be a starting CB. Other players who could compete for playing time include juniors Josh Thompson (5’8” 160), Shane Cole (5’8” 155), Dylan Parodi (5’9” 155), Joey Slimak (5’10” 160), Colin Malone (5’9” 155), and Stephen Stringfield (5’10” 150), Jake Jackson (5’9” 155), and Kyler Kohl (5’9” 150) In the kicking game, Fishers returns a solid kicker and punter in senior Jack Phillips (6’0” 160). Phillips connected on 8 or 10 FG attempts in 2018 and averaged 52.1 yards per kickoff. As a punter, Phillips averaged 36.3 yards per punt including a long of 61 and 11 punts downed inside the 20 yard line. He helped the punt team establish a new school record of 35.7 net yards per punt. Backing up Phillips in kicking and punting duties appears to by junior Jozef Osiecki and junior Bobby Fox respectively. The Tigers return 2 capable long snappers who both saw varsity time last year in FB Adam Norton and TE Silas Martin. RB/CB Shaun Kim returns to handle kick return duties after returning 8 KOs for 133 yards (16.6 ypr). Other prospects to handle KO returns are RBs Matt Noble and Dominic Oliverio. No players return with varsity experience to handle punt returns but top prospects include junior WRs Reggie Cook and Andrew Colsten and senior WR Kristian Jones. Fishers will once again play one of the top schedules in the state as they open their season with two MIC opponents and play 6 tough HCC opponents.. The Tigers open their season at home vs North Central HS followed by a road game at Pike. In addition to North Central, the Tigers will have home games vs HSE, Avon, Franklin Central, and Zionsville. The Tigers will go on the road for games at Pike, Noblesville, Brownsburg, and Westfield. This year, Fishers will return to IHSAA tournament action by going North where they will be in Sectional #4 with Carmel, Hamilton SE, and Westfield. Expect an exciting season of great football in 2019.
