Port Phillip Heritage Review 129 Dundas Place) or rows of three (114-118 and 146-150 Bridport Street), four (101-107 Bridport Street) or even five (109-117 and 124-132 Bridport Street; 115-123 Victoria Avenue). The longest row, with eight identical shops, stands at 133-147 Victoria Avenue. Victorian shops are of brick construction, mostly with rendered façades although some in bichromatic brick (eg 101-107 Bridport Street; 115-123 Victoria Avenue), occasionally overpainted. Typical of the ornate Boom style of the 1880s, facades have moulded pilasters, cornices and stringcourses, and parapets with shaped pediments (half-round, segmental, rectangular or triangular) embellished with decorative motifs such as balustrades, brackets, consoles, urns and orbs. Some of the more unusual and striking details include vermiculated quoining (133-147 Victoria Avenue), rendered lettering (eg the exchange buildings at 91-93 Dundas Place, and a t craven chemist at 134 Bridport Street) or wrought iron balconettes to upstairs windows (93-95 Victoria Avenue). Windows at the upper levels are variously rectangular, round-arched or segmental-arched, with a broad range of Italianate-style decorative treatments including pediments, colonettes, pilasters, balustraded sills and moulded architraves with keystones. In a few cases, the upper level has been set back to create a balcony with a wrought iron balustrade (eg 133-147 Victoria Avenue) or an arcaded loggia (eg 163 and 183-187 Victoria Avenue). Some of these balconies have been infilled. At ground floor, these Victorian shops generally retain their original shopfront fitouts, such as splayed entrances with tiled thresholds, huge metal-framed windows with multi-paned or leadlight highlights, and spandrels with glazed green or brown ceramic tiles. -

"Arden" at nos. 1-2 Marine Parade, St Kilda, was built in 1881-83 as a two storeyed terraced pair but presumably altered to form the present Arden Flats in 1934. It is historically and aesthetically significant. It is historically significant (Criterion A) for its capacity to demonstrate two important phases in the evolution of St Kilda, the first being the period of late Victorian expansion and the second being the Inter War years during which St Kilda emerged as a pre-eminent location for apartments. -

The former shops and residential building at 14-15 Punt Road, Windsor was built in 1905 for C. Peacoulakes. It is aesthetically important (Criterion E). This importance rests on its unusual façade treament consisting of suspended pilasters capped by figures of cherubs and other ornamentation. The building's cultural value hinges also on its prominent position at St. Kilda Junction and on its capacity to recall a time when this intersection was an important civic space. Primary Source Andrew Ward, City of Port Phillip Heritage Review, 1998 Other Studies Description A three storeyed former retail and residential building distinguished by its romantic arcaded façade treatment with faceted suspended piers surmounted by cherubs at first floor level. The windows are round arched with cast cement shell ends whilst the upper level is more severe, having round arched windows, a simple cornice and the date "1905" in raised cement to the pediment which may have been defaced by a surmounting advertising sign. The side elevation is of utilitarian character in overpainted face brickwork. Condition: Sound. Integrity: Medium, Ground level façade defaced. History At the turn of the century there were two shops each described as “brick and wood, two rooms” on the south east corner of Hoddle Street (Punt Road) and Nelson Street which were owned by Albert Burgess. -

Richard Peterson: A Place of Sensuous Resort: Buildings of St Kilda and Their People 42 Woy Woy 77 Marine Parade, Elwood Woy Woy, 2002 Designed by architect Geoffrey Mewton of Mewton and Grounds in 1935-36, Woy Woy is not only the earliest of a small group of Modernist flats in St Kilda, but also certainly the earliest in Melbourne, and arguably, in Australia. Sydney flats, tend to retain decorative elements of Moderne streamlining. But Woy Woy is austere, daringly minimal, rendered plain, without ornament. The design is in the composition of pure, pale, geometric forms. Arguably, Woy Woy is the earliest, multi-storied, Modernist building in Australia. Richard Peterson: A Place of Sensuous Resort: Buildings of St Kilda and Their People competitor for this accolade would seem to be Cairo flats, 98 Nicholson Street, Fitzroy (also 1935-36) designed by architect Best Overend, of Taylor Soilleux and Overend. The only modestly decorative indulgence at Woy Woy is the name, jauntily applied in blocky relief letters, as if snatched from a Ginger Meggs comic strip, and a small cream brick nib. The connection of the flats with the coastal town north of Sydney, is not known. At three stories with an accessible roof (it seems taller), Woy Woy is still the tallest building along the waterfront, south of Edgewater Towers. The interlocking cubic forms at Woy Woy, reveal Mewton’s interest in the works of Willem Marinus Dudok, whose best-known building, the Raadhuis at Hilversum, Netherlands (1928-31, 38), but Mewton avoids Dudok’s decorative flashes. -
