Falcataria moluccana Molucca albizia Fabaceae Forest Starr, Kim Starr, and Lloyd Loope United States Geological Survey--Biological Resources Division Haleakala Field Station, Maui, Hawai'i January, 2003 OVERVIEW Falcataria moluccana has been widely planted throughout the world for ornament and reforestation. It was first introduced to Hawai'i in 1917 by Joseph Rock (Little and Skolmen 1989). In Hawai'i, F. moluccana has been planted by the hundreds of thousands for ornament and reforestation. Trees are attractive and the wood is useful for a variety of things from furniture making to canoe building. However, trees are spreading from initial plantings to adjacent pastures, forests, and disturbed areas. Because of its widespread distribution throughout the state coupled with its popularity, perhaps the best approach currently would be to control the tree in certain sites where it is not wanted, such as natural areas, pastures, and farmland. Seeds tend to fall nearby and trees do not disperse over a long distance (miles), except when people move the tree to a new area. If this dispersal trend were to change, such as if a vector to spread the trees further arrived or if it was planted again on a grand scale to new areas, the tree may become a bigger problem. TAXONOMY Family: Fabaceae (pea family) (Wagner et al. 1999). Latin name: Falcataria moluccana (Miq.) Barneby and Grimes (Herbarium Pacificum Staff 1998). Synonyms: Paraserianthes falcataria (L.) I. Nielsen (Wagner et al. 1999), Albizia falcataria (L.) Fosberg, A. falcata (L.) Backer (Little and Skolmen 1989). Common names: Molucca albizia (Little and Skolmen 1989). Taxonomic notes: There seems to be a lot of name changing and rearranging that has occurred within this complex. -

Callaway 2 1 Western Pacific Tropical Research Center, University of Guam, Mangilao, GU 96923, USA 2 Division of Biological Sciences and the Institute on Ecosystems, University of Montana, Missoula, MT 59812, USA; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: Mixtures of species in natural or agricultural systems can increase the performance of individuals or groups relative to monocultures, often through facilitative mechanisms. Mechanisms include root communication by which plants can interrogate the identity of adjacent plants and respond negatively or positively. Alternatively, mixtures of species can ameliorate the harmful effects of soil biota that are pronounced in monocultures, thereby improving plant productivity. Limited investments into roots by shade-grown Serianthes plants in nurseries have been correlated with reduced survival after transplantation to forested habitats. We used companion container cultures in two studies to determine if heterospecific neighbor, or “stranger” roots could experi- mentally increase the root growth of Serianthes grandiflora plants used as surrogates for the crit- ically endangered Serianthes nelsonii. In one study, native sympatric eudicot and pteridophyte companions increased relative root growth and conspecific companions decreased root growth in comparison to control plants that were grown with no companions. In a second study, the phylogeny of companion plants elicited different root growth responses following the order of congeneric < eudicot = monocot < gymnosperm < pteridophyte. We propose the use of stranger roots that are experimentally maintained in production containers as a passive protocol to improve relative and absolute root growth, leading to improved post-transplant growth and survival of Citation: Marler, T.E.; Callaway, R.M. -

Scarified seeds were pre-soaked in gibberellic acid (GA3) up to 300 mg/L and nitrate solutions of 3000 mg/L to determine if germination was influenced by these treatments. Scarified and imbibed seeds were incubated in high red:far red and low red:far red light to determine the influence of light quality on germination traits. The GA3 and nitrate treatments did not influence germination percentage or timing, but did increase the height of newly emerged seedlings. Moreover, GA3 extended the longevity of cotyledons and shortened the window of time that seedlings required to resume height growth. These growth responses were not sustained, and all seedlings reached heights of 30 cm at a similar number of weeks. The light treatments did not influence any of the germination response traits. The results indicate that imbibing seeds with chemical solutions and providing light in a range of light quality treatments exerted a minimal influence on S. nelsonii seed germination behaviors. Imbibing seeds with water and germinating in darkness is sufficient for achieving the germination of this endangered tree species. Keywords: endangered species; Guam; imbibition; priming 1. Abstract Climate change and sea level rise are a global threat to coastal areas and, in particular, to small island states. Future projections indicate that sea levels are expected to rise in the next century at different rates in multiple regions around the world. On top of that, the intensity and frequency of extreme events such as typhoons may vary. In this study, the impacts in terms of flooding of different typhoon conditions are assessed in the present day conditions as well as accounting for climate change effects. In particular, the assessment is carried out for the island of Ebeye, located on Kwajalein Atoll (Republic of Marshall Islands). The results presented herein show that coastal engineering experiences at traditional coasts cannot be applied one-on-one to small islands states in the Pacific, because the relevant hydrodynamic processes offshore and on the reef are fundamentally different. These processes can be examined using a modeling approach combining parametric wind models, as well as process-based models such as Delft3D and XBeach. The model results suggest that offshore extreme wave and storm surge levels may increase by up to 6-8% as a result of higher typhoon winds. Nevertheless, the projected sea level rise is by far the dominant process in relation to increase in flooding levels, accounting for about 80% of the total increase in flooding impacts. 2. COWIE2 The unique and fragile ecosystems of small, tropical, oceanic islands are more and more being challenged by both deliberate and inadvertent artificial introduc tions of alien species. That island species, especially endemics, are highly vulnerable to such introductions, and manifest a rate of extinction far in excessofthat ofcontinental species, is becoming widely accepted (e.g., Diamond 1984, Atkinson 1989). The Hawaiian Islands, with their high levels ofendemism and spectacular evolutionary radiations in many groups of both plants and animals, arguably have suffered the most severe impacts. The extremely high rate of extinction of the native biota and the modification of native habitat in the Hawaiian Islands are often, but not always, attributable to introduced predators, parasites, competitors, and so forth. Itwas therefore highly appropri ate that this symposium be held in Honolulu. Many of the presentations dealt with Hawaiian instances, reflecting not only the affiliations of the participants but also the concentration of the problems in Hawaii (and indeed the acute awareness of them, at least on the part of biologists). Nonetheless, the geographical coverage was broad-from Singapore to Hawaii and Guam to New Caledonia and the Society Islands. The subject matter was also broad, ranging widely across the plant and animal kingdoms, from trees to flies, snails to geckos. And, although many participants recounted numerous, depressing case histories, a positive, forward-looking management approach was often intimated and in some instances expounded. -
