    PRIMA DONNA/RUFUS WAINWRIGHT INTERVIEW WITH RUFUS WAINWRIGHT In 2009, you presented Prima Donna, the opera, a project that grew over time to become first a film, then a visual concert. How was this project born? Rufus Wainwright: I’ve always loved the opera. It’s a form that’s part of my musical culture. When I was about thirteen, a so-called normal child who listened to pop music and had long been immersed in my parents’ folk music, I had a sort of revelation while listening to Verdi’s Requiem with Leontyne Price. I was enthralled. Since then, even though I’ve always known I wanted to be a pop singer, opera has been a sort of secret refuge that has even influenced my own music. I’ve often used its symbolism, its emotions, but also its orchestration in my own compositions, thanks in particular to string instruments. Writing Prima Donna was my way of giving back to opera all that opera gave me. What was the starting point of the libretto? I was about to start working on an opera loosely based on Marguerite Yourcenar’s Memoirs of Hadrien. But I didn’t feel ready to conquer the Roman Empire musically with the tools I had at my disposal! I wasn’t quite ready to write the orchestration I imagined for that project. So I started looking for a subject that wouldn’t have that kind of historical weight, that would be more personal. That’s when I came across the series of interviews Maria Callas gave to Lord Harewood in 1968.

Both music critics and Wainwright's loyal fans appreciate the structural complexity and lush orchestrations of his works. Inspired by the Roman Emperor Hadrian and his love for Antinous, Hadrian is currently in development and is scheduled to open the COC’s 2018/2019 mainstage season. The painting for the cover was done by Albuquerque artist Timothy Cummings. Wainwright says his husband, Jörn Weisbrodt, suggested reaching out to Cummings. “Timothy is a friend and one of the great painters of this world,” Wainwright says. The new album focuses on nine sonnets from William Shakespeare. “I’ve always been inspired by Shakespeare and the sonnets,” he says. “Robert Wilson asked me to write music for a play containing 20 of the sonnets, which was premiered by the Berliner Ensemble in 2009. In 2010, the San Francisco Symphony commissioned orchestral versions of five of the sonnets. In combining the two ideas, I began to record the full album in 2015.” Wainwright continues to keep busy by working on his second opera, “Hadrian,” which is commissioned by the Canadian Opera Company and will premiere in fall 2018 in Toronto.

Mezzo-soprano Pauline Viardot’s (1821–1910) diva status provided her with a platform from which to share the full extent of her musical abilities. Viardot’s capabilities as a performer are widely acknowledged and reviewed throughout history; however, her contributions to French music beyond simply singing are only beginning to be understood. Her Thursday night salon promoted the music of both established and unknown composers, and hosted important guests, including Alfred de Musset, George Sand, Charles Dickens, Charles Gounod, Frédéric Chopin, and Franz Liszt. Viardot’s musical talents were respected and utilized in the premieres of Giacomo Meyerbeer’s Le prophète (1849) , Charles Gounod’s Sapho (1851) , and Hector Berlioz’s revision of Gluck’s Orphée (1859) . Through her salon and collaboration with composers, Viardot shaped the careers of others, contributing in a broader sense to the trajectory of French music of the nineteenth century.

    ARTICLES “Saw You in the Dark”: Exploring Rufus Wainwright’s Emotional Vulnerability in Fan-Captured Live Performance Videos Stephanie Salerno Introduction On December 9, 2010, Canadian-American popular singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright performed a solo show at the Egg in Albany, New York. Breaking from his usual popular performance practice that incorporated audience applause, between-song banter, and a set list comprised of old favourites and new tunes, he performed his 2010 album All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu as a complete classical song cycle, or a collection of art songs that are thematically connected through harmonic material, melodic motifs, text set to music, mood, or narrative.1 As a strict solo piano/voice song cycle, the Lulu performances were different from his previous tours, largely because of the personal circumstances surrounding the recording and touring of the album. Wainwright’s mother, Québécoise folk-singer Kate McGarrigle, suffered a rare sarcoma in the late 2000s, passing away in January 2010.2 The timing of her illness and the emotional stress of saying goodbye to a loved one profoundly influenced Wainwright’s sixth studio album. This was not only because it was the last completed album his mother would ever hear, but because it became a vehicle through which Wainwright grieved and processed her death. One fan in attendance captured nearly the entire December 9 show on a Flip Video camcorder and uploaded all but two songs of the twelve-song cycle to YouTube via five separate videos. In doing so, this fan and YouTube user granted individuals lacking access or means to see Wainwright and experience the song cycle in person a digital opportunity via a screen and an Internet connection.
