The purpose of the draft is to assign amateur baseball players to major league teams. The draft order is determined based on the previous season's standings, with the team possessing the worst record receiving the first pick. Eligible amateur players include graduated high school players who have not attended college, any junior or community college players, and players at four-year colleges and universities three years after first enrolling or after their 21st birthdays (whichever occurs first). From 1966-1986, a January draft was held in addition to the June draft targeting high school players who graduated in the winter, junior college players, and players who had dropped out of four-year colleges and universities. To date, there have been 1,170 Maryland players selected in the First-Year Player Drafts either from a Maryland High School (337), Maryland College (458), Non-Maryland College (357), or a Maryland amateur baseball club (18). The most Maryland selections in a year was in 1970 (38) followed by 1984 (37) and 1983 (36). The first Maryland selection was Jim Spencer from Andover High School with the 11th overall selection in the inaugural 1965 June draft.

Our Mission Endures Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2020 July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020 CATHOLIC COMMUNITY FOUNDATION ARCHDIOCESE OF BALTIMORE Share Your Blessings. Sustain Our Faith. OVERVIEW Why The Catholic Community Foundation 1 Welcome from Archbishop Lori 2 Letter from the President 3 FINANCIALS Grant Distributions 4 Year-in-Review 6 Performance Review 7 Selected Financial Information 8 ENDOWMENTS Our Mission Endures 10 New Endowment Funds 14 Endowment Funds by Purpose 15 DONOR-ADVISED FUNDS 27 LEGACY LEAGUE 28 ABOUT THE FOUNDATION Foundation Leadership 31 Contact Us 32 OVERVIEW Why The Catholic Community Foundation Many Catholic Community Foundation donors and fund holders feel God has blessed them and their families and seek to show their gratitude by helping to preserve the Church’s ministries for future generations of faithful. Even during, or rather, more pointedly, especially during times of uncertainty, like that brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, the Foundation and its endowments help sustain the good works of Catholic institutions in and outside of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Endowments established to provide tuition assistance, for example, are making it possible for Catholic school families to keep their children enrolled, even if economic circumstances have significantly decreased their household incomes. Parishes, also feeling economic strains from losses in Offertory due to decreased Mass attendance, have been able to use distributions from their endowments to complete repairs and long-sought capital projects. Ministries of charitable and evangelical outreach, needed especially in times of crisis, are also strengthened in their missions by distributions from endowments in the Foundation that benefit them.

  • Bishop Walsh Senior Among 60 High School Scholars Honored
Bishop Walsh senior among 60 high school scholars honored By Elizabeth Lowe [email protected] Maggie Czapski, a senior at Bishop Walsh School in Cumberland, credits time management skills and supportive teachers and coaches with helping her balance myriad commitments. “It helps going to Bishop Walsh, where the coaches work together so I can do all of these activities,” said Czapski, 17. “I couldn’t do it on my own.” Czapski was one of 60 seniors – three from each of the 20 Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore – honored by the Department of Catholic Schools at the 22nd Distinctive Scholars Convocation April 8 at Mount St. Joseph High School in Irvington. “It’s an honor to be chosen because all of the hard work really pays off,” said Czapski, who has a 4.1 GPA and is ranked second in her class. “Being in a Catholic school, it means a lot.” A four-sport athlete, Czapski played varsity soccer and basketball throughout high school, in addition to running cross country and track. Last fall, she was captain of the both the soccer and cross country teams. She is also a member of the marching band and campus ministry. As a campus minister, Czapski helps plan liturgies and serves as an extraordinary minister of holy Communion. Bishop Walsh is a pre-K-12 school, and she began playing piano at school liturgies when she was in the eighth grade. Despite her busy schedule, schoolwork comes first. “I just do my work when I’m supposed to,” said Czapski, who has taken five Advanced Placement courses.
