In it, I asked the people of our Archdiocese to enter into a deeper relationship with Christ, to be not merely His disciples but His missionary disciples, extending the light of the Gospel to others among us so that they, too, could fully welcome His Word into their hearts. The Catholic Community Foundation is uniquely positioned to aid this evangelization effort for years to come. “Through their endowed giving, Foundation contributors are helping to foster a culture of Catholic growth and renewal.” Established in 1998 by my predecessor, Cardinal William H. Keeler, the Catholic Community Foundation has grown to over 470 separate funds, each with its own unique purpose and benefit. Not only are our parishes well-represented and supported by the Foundation, so too are our Catholic schools, clergy, religious and a host of ministries that are critically integral to carrying out the Church’s evangelizing work. Indeed, through their endowed giving, Foundation contributors are helping to foster a culture of Catholic growth and renewal. -

October 2018 Why we need to encourage vocations by Fr. Joe Moriarty Rector Without vocations, we won’t have priests. Without priests, we won’t have the Eucharist. St. Mary's Seminary & University Annual Report 2017
ST. MARY ’ S SEMINARY&UNIVERSITY Annual Report 2017 1 A N EW ERA IN SEMINARY FORMATION The Congregation for Clergy, the department of the Holy See that oversees seminary formation, recently issued a new Ratio Fundamentalis Institutionis Sacerdotalis containing the Vatican’s guidelines for seminary programs. This represents the initiation of a new era in seminary formation that takes into consideration the evolution of seminary programs and social and Rev. Phillip J. Brown, P.S.S. cultural changes that have occurred since the last Ratio in 1970 following the Second Vatican President Rector Council, and Pope St. John Paul II’s Pastores Dabo Vobis in 1992, both of which gave norms and guidance for seminary programs. Because these are so essential for the work we do, I wanted to let you know a little about this important new document and how it will affect St. Mary’s. Pastores dabo vobis has been the most important document for seminary formators and administrators since 1992. Pastores dabo vobis is the first official document that spoke of the “four pillars” of formation: Human; spiritual; intellectual; and pastoral. This year's Annual Report illuminates the ways our program integrates the four pillars. While Pastores dabo vobis alludes to the process of formation, its main emphasis is on the content of formation programs; hence the “four pillars” referred to on the pages that follow. The new Ratio , on the other hand, shifts emphasis to the process of formation, speaking of four “stages” of formation while not abandoning the content of the “four pillars” upon which sound formation must be anchored. -
Monsignor Myles Mcgowan Celebrates 70 Years As a Priest in June
Monsignor Myles McGowan celebrates 70 years as a priest in June. Nearly 70 years after he was ordained to the priesthood, Monsignor Myles McGowan is still completely devoted to his vocation. The oldest priest of the Archdiocese of Baltimore continues to celebrate Mass, hear confessions and help out whenever needed in local parishes. The 94-year–old Irish priest will celebrate his 70th anniversary in the priesthood on June 17. His actual anniversary is June 20. In 1937, he was ordained in Dublin, Ireland, by Archbishop Michael J. Curley, who was a friend of the family, for the Archdiocese of Baltimore. “I had a feeling I had a vocation and I wanted to pursue it,” said Monsignor McGowan who entered a missionary seminary after graduating high school at the age of 18. After serving two years in Limerick, Ireland, the 26-year-old priest arrived at St. Gregory the Great, Baltimore, ready to serve and soak in American culture. Monsignor McGowan said one of the biggest challenges in his priesthood was the culture shock and slight language barrier. “The people were very, very kind and forgiving and put up with me,” he said with a laugh. “My appointments were very good all the way through. That was certainly a bonus.” After serving four years at St. Gregory the Great, Baltimore, Monsignor McGowan became a chaplain for the Air Corps, serving in the states and Italy for four years. After was then assigned to Immaculate Conception, Towson, as an associate pastor for 10 years. His first pastor assignment was at St. -
List of Priests and Brothers Accused of Child Sexual Abuse
1 List of Priests and Brothers Accused of Child Sexual Abuse [Last updated April 16, 2019; downloaded June 29, 2019 from https://www.archbalt.org/child-and-youth-protection/priests-and-brothers-accused-of- abuse/] In September 2002, the Archdiocese of Baltimore published a list of priests and religious brothers who had served in the Archdiocese of Baltimore and who had been accused, in their lifetime, of child sexual abuse. The 2002 list did not include some instances where an investigation concluded that the facts did not indicate sexual abuse had occurred. The 57 men on that original publication are listed below, with some minor updates to those paragraphs since 2002 noted [in italics] where a request for an update has been made. Since 2002, additional priests and brothers have been added to this list because of an allegation of child sexual abuse or because they were identified publicly in connection with such an allegation, when the priest had an assignment in public ministry in the Archdiocese of Baltimore or the abuse occurred in Baltimore. In instances involving priests from religious orders or other dioceses (noted in parentheses), the Archdiocese’s information is often quite limited. In some cases, the information below came from the 2018 Grand Jury Report of the Pennsylvania Attorney General or publications made by religious orders or other sources, and additional information for such individuals might be obtained by looking at available resources on the internet. The entries below list known, formal assignments in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Many of the priests and brothers listed also served at additional locations on an informal basis, and at times outside of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
