For more than a century the college has played a vital role in transforming youth into socially concerned, morally upright and responsible citizens. The college has a glorious history of more than hundred years. Mahatma Gandhiji visited t h e i n s titution on 8th May 1915 and addressed the gathering in the college auditorium. In order to commemorate his visit the auditorium is named after him as ‘Bapuji Sabhangana’. In accordance with the Vision and the Mission, the college strives to impart quality education to socially deprived students to enable social mobility. In tune with the New Education Policy, it is addressing issues of equity and equality by providing education to the under-privileged and backward sections of society. Majority of the students are first generation learners and belong to SC/ST, OBC and minority communities. Kannada is the most preferred medium of instruction. Equipping students with requisite skills to help them to meet the global challenges is one of the top priorities of the college. In accordance with the recommendations of the peer team that visited during the first cycle, B.Com, BBM, and Post Graduate Courses in History, Kannada, English were started in 2007. PG courses in Economics in 2009-10 and Sociology in 2010-11 were started and they are academically excelling. " !! !# The second cycle peer team visited in 2010. We made a sincere effort to fulfill the recommendations of the peer team. The college abides by the curriculum of the affiliating University and the directions of the Department of Collegiate Education. The Library has been made more resourceful to the teachers and the students through e-learning. The Government policy of transfers and deputations acts as a hinderance to materialize a few recommendations made by the peer committee. The college gives importance to faculty improvement programmes. Two faculty members are pursuing Ph.D. under FDP program; twelve are pursuing Ph.D on part time basis. Two faculty members completed their UGC sponsored Minor Research Projects and two projects are ongoing. Dr. K. Krishnappa, Associate professor of Kannada, is engaged in a project on ‘The Study of Socio Cultural Aspects of Dakkaliga Community- a nomadic tribe spread across Karnataka State’ funded by the State Government. Bangalore University has recognized the potential of the institution and sanctioned three research centres in Kannada, History and Economics. Fifteen candidates are pursuing Ph. D. in Kannada under JRF and other scholarships. The introduction of PG courses has led to the shortage of class rooms. To overcome the problem a separate PG block was proposed. Government of Karnataka sanctioned grant for new building to meet the immediate requirement of the classrooms. The building is almost complete and shortly it will be used for Post Graduate departments. The college offers Hindi, Sanskrit and Telugu along with Kannada as second language. Performance of the students in examination is fairly good. The success rate of students is in the range of 42 to 95%. Some of our UG and PG students add another feather to the cap through their university ranks. Some of the Commerce students secured centum in subjects like Income Tax, Corporate Accounting.
