Present Status of Fish Biodiversity and Abundance in Shiba River, Bangladesh

Rahman Department of Fisheries, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi 6205, Bangladesh Abstract: The study was conducted to investigate the abundance and present status of fish biodiversity in the Shiba river at Tanore Upazila of Rajshahi district, Bangladesh. The study was conducted from November, 2016 to February, 2017. A total of 30 species of fishes were recorded belonging to nine orders, 15 families and 26 genera. Cypriniformes and Siluriformes were the most diversified groups in terms of species. Among 30 species, nine species under the order Cypriniformes, nine species of Siluriformes, five species of Perciformes, two species of Channiformes, two species of Mastacembeliformes, one species of Beloniformes, one species of Clupeiformes, one species of Osteoglossiformes and one species of Decapoda, Crustacea were found. Machrobrachium lamarrei of the family Palaemonidae under Decapoda order was the most dominant species contributing 26.29% of the total catch. In the Shiba river only 6.65% threatened fish species were found, and among them 1.57% were endangered and 4.96% were vulnerable. The mean values of Shannon-Weaver diversity (H), Margalef’s richness (D) and Pielou’s (e) evenness were found as 1.86, 2.22 and 0.74, respectively. Relationship between Shannon-Weaver diversity index (H) and pollution indicates the river as light to moderate polluted. -

The b values ranged from 2.62 to 3.44. Nine of the species displayed isometric growth (b = 3), seven species negative allometric growth (b < 3), and eight species represented positive allometric growth (b < 3). -

Some interesting fish species reported from this river are Barilus shacra, Garra annandalei, Psilorhynchoides pseudecheneis, Badis badis, Olyra longicoudata, Tor putitora, Labeo dero and Anguilla bengalensis . Fish diversity of Triyuga river is rich, thus further extensive study is essential for their conservation. 1 Yadanabon University Research Journal, 2019, Vol-10, No.1 Food and Feeding Habit of Some Freshwater Fishes from Are-Laung-Wei- Tode In (Lake), in Sagaing Township Mi Mi Khaing, Khin Yee Mon Khaing** Abstract The food and feeding habits of seven fish species from Are-laung-wei-tode In (Lake) were investigated between July and December, 2017. The fish samples were collected from the local fishermen during study period. Observation of total length, standard length, body weight, relative length of alimentary canal and analysis of stomach contents were made. The relative length of alimentary canal was described in relation to feeding habit. Results from the stomach content analyzed using frequency of occurrence method show that three species were carnivores ( Mystus cavasius, Parambasis ranga, Glossogobius giuris), two species omnivores (Puntius chola, Salmophasia sardinella) and another two species herbivores (Catla catla, Trichogaster pectoralis). Key words: Food, Feeding habit, stomach content. Introduction Fish play an important role in the development of a nation. Apart from being a cheap source of highly nutritive protein, it also contains other essential nutrients required by the body.The food fish for the world population is produced from both aquaculture and capture fisheries. The fish consumed by human can either be freshwater or marine fish (Adadu et al., 2014). Feeding is the dominant activity of the entire life cycle of fish (Royce, 1972). Therefore, the study of food and feeding habits of a fish is very important. This is also essential for any fishery management. Food and feeding habit of fish are important biological factors for selecting a group of fish for culture in ponds to avoid competition for food among themselves and live in association and to utilize all the available food (Dewam and Saha,1979). -

Abdus Salam Bhuiyan2 1Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi 6205, Bangladesh. 2Department of Zoology, Faculty of Life and Earth, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi 6205, Bangladesh. *E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Food and feeding habits of Rita rita collected from the Padda river in the north-western region of Bangladesh were investigated by examining the gastro-intestine contents of 744 specimens collected from May, 2010 to April, 2011. Their diet consisted of a broad spectrum of food types but crustaceans were dominant, with copepodes constituting 20.73%, other non-copepode crustaceans constituted 12.01%. The next major food group was insect (15.97%), followed by mollusks (14.76%), teleosts (12.98%) and fish eggs (8.608%). Food items like Teleosts, mollusks, insects and shrimps tended to occur in the stomachs in higher frequencies with an increase in R. rita size (up to 30.5 - 40.5cm), while fish eggs, copepods and non-copepode crustaceans tended to increase in stomachs at sizes between 10.5-20.5cm. Analysis of monthly variations in stomach fullness indicated that feeding intensity fluctuated throughout the year with a low during June and August corresponding to the spawning period. Fish diversity and conservation of fishery resources of the river Pilasalunki, Phulbani district D. SATAPATHY AND S.K. MISRA ABSTRACT...... The study of fish diversity of the river Pilasalunki situated in Phulbani distict, Odisha was attempted during 2012. A total of 23 fish species belonging to 9 families were recorded. Out of the recorded species, 35 per cent are enlisted as vulnerable, 52 per cent as lower risk near threatened category. Maximum number of fish species were collected from slow flow site (31.6%) followed by silty sand beds (17.6%), deep water zone (15.8%), gravel habitat (15.8%), fast flow zone(10.5%) and least in shallow water zone. Shannon diversity index (H’) fluctuated from 0.29 to 0.93, Simpson dominance index ranged from 0.14 to 0.52 and Margalef richness fluctuated from 1.38 to 9.65. Bray Curtis cluster analysis recorded 100 per cent similarities within Wallago attu, Labeo dyochilus and Nemacheilus botia (sub cluster-I), Puntius sarana, P. Sophore, and Mystus cavasius (sub cluster-II), Glosogobius giuris and Mastacembalus armatus (sub cluster-III). Correspondence analysis indicated Nemacheilus botia, Labeo dyochilus, Heteropneustes fossilis, Wallago attu, Cirrhinus reba, Glosogobius giuris, Mastacembalus armatus and Mystus cavasius, Channa gachua, Puntius sophore and Puntius Author for Corresponding - sarana congregated distantly from origin suggesting their stock enhancement through conservation measures. There is worldwide distribution of fresh water fishes. Pakistan is blessed with a diversity of fishes owing to streams, rivers, dams and ocean. In freshwater bodies of the country about 193 fish species were recorded. There are about 30 species of fish which are commercially exploited for good source of proteins and vitamins. The fish marketing has great socio economic value in the country. Unfortunately, fish fauna is declining at alarming rate due to water pollution, over fishing, pesticide use and other anthropogenic activities. Therefore, about 20 percent of fish population is threatened as endangered or extinct. All Mashers are ‘endangered’, notably Tor putitora, which is also included in the Red List Category of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as Endangered. Mashers (Tor species) are distributed in Southeast Asian and Himalayan regions including trans-Himalayan countries like Pakistan and India. The heavy flood of July, 2010 resulted in the minimizing of Tor putitora species Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the fish is now found extinct from river Swat. -
