  • POST-BRITISH CRIME FILMS and the ETHICS of RETRIBUTIVE VIOLENCE Mark Schmitt (TU Dortmund University)
CINEMA 11 152 “THEY’RE BAD PEOPLE – THEY SHOULD SUFFER”: POST-BRITISH CRIME FILMS AND THE ETHICS OF RETRIBUTIVE VIOLENCE Mark Schmitt (TU Dortmund University) In recent years, British popular genre cinema has displayed a tendency to allegorise the ethical ques- tions resulting from the nation’s social and political challenges of the 21st century.1 Whether it is the Blair government’s decision to join the US in the Iraq war in 2003 and the ensuing disillusionment with democracy and the futility of public protest, the austerity measures and subsequently increasing social divisions in the wake of the global financial crisis of 2008, the ongoing process of Scottish and Welsh devolution that challenges the very notion of a United Kingdom, Britain finds itself in a stage that Michael Gardiner has described as “post-British.”2 On the level of the nation-state, and especially with regard to Scottish and Welsh devolution, the post-British process can be identified as the “demo- cratic restructuring of each nation within union and each nation still affected by Anglophone imperial- ism”3, while the social structure of Britain is still marked by the internal fault lines of class divisions of class. The notion of “post-Britain” has been addressed in British film studies. William Brown has sug- gested that Britain’s cinematic output in the 21st century offers a “paradoxically post-British” perspec- tive which is reflected in subject matter, ideological points of view and modes of production.4 As Brown argues, such post-British perspectives can particularly be found in popular genre films such as 28 Days Later (2002) and V for Vendetta (2006).5 In the following, I will argue that this post-British sensibility in contemporary national genre cinema is aligned with urgent ethical questions regarding the nation state on both the British level as well as within a larger European context.

  • Straya Mate: Probing an Australian Masculinity Through Landscape Narrative, Visual Art and Dystopian Cinema
‘STRAYA MATE: PROBING AN AUSTRALIAN MASCULINITY THROUGH LANDSCAPE NARRATIVE, VISUAL ART AND DYSTOPIAN CINEMA ASHLEY DAVID KERR This paper explores the prevalence of landscape narratives in art and cinema containing post-apocalyptic futures, bushranger mythology and vigilantism, with a focus on the type of masculinity reflected within these contexts. I will introduce the kind of masculinity that is attributed to Australian men as part of a national myth of character, and will examine various dystopic film narratives, such asMad Max 2 (1981) and its recent counterpart The Rover(2014). In other words, I am drawn to narratives that feature a decline of civilisation, are set in an expansive Australian landscape, and often contain troubled male protagonists. I wish to demonstrate that this landscape, and its history of violence, hostility and suffering, feeds into post-colonial representations of reworked historical narratives and characters. Here, I link the American frontier to Australian representations of the fringe of white settlement via film theorist David Melbye’s theory on landscape allegory. I also present creative works of my own that were produced in relation to these ideas, and use them to explore male characters not only as a facet of Australian cultural identity, but also in relation to wider concerns of masculinity and nature. I conclude with a discussion about Australian artists of my generation who are also tackling the issue of ‘Aussie’ masculinity. AUSSIE BLOKES Masculinity in ‘White Australia’ has been shaped by the pioneering spirit of the colony, and its dominant formation remains a complex construction of Anglo-Saxon settler experience. It can be read as a vestige, if you will, of the hardships of the colony, such as the brutality of conditions faced by convicts, the competition of the Gold Rush and land prospecting, and the physical struggle of convicts and free settlers alike with the harsh Australian environment.

Italian Journal of Sociology of Education, 11(2), 218-252. doi: 10.14658/pupj-ijse-2019-2-11 VA ADO UP P Stories of Revenge in Italian Popular Culture. A Narrative Study of Vigilante Films Ferdinando Spina* Abstract: In recent years, we have witnessed, particularly in Italy, a growing support for the “self-defence” argument and the vigilante justice. This troubling phenomenon requires further empirical and theoretical attention to determine why and how media manage to draw the interest of the public when they tackle revenge and private justice topics. The objective of this paper is to explore narratives of private revenge in popular culture, specifically in Italian cinema. The first section introduces some reflections on the relations between narrative and criminology and the interest of cinema in revenge tales. Then follows a reconstruction of the historical evolution and narrative structures of both American and Italian vigilante films. Finally, a detailed analysis is presented of a representative sample of Italian films of the genre, highlighting the narrative structures and main themes, as well as the similarities and differences with respect to the American models. Keywords: private justice, vigilantism, narrative, popular criminology, vigilante film * Department of History, Society and Human Studies, University of Salento, Italy.

Lynch 3 ABSTRACT TERROR NULLIUS (Soda_JErk, 2018) is an experimEntal samplE film that remixes Australian cinema, tElEvision and news mEdia into a “politiCal revenge fablE” (soda_jerk.co.au). WhilE TERROR NULLIUS is overtly politiCal in tone, understanding its speCifiC mEssages requires unpaCking its form, contEnt and cultural referencEs. This thesis investigatEs the multiplE layers of TERROR NULLIUS’ politiCs, thereby highlighting the politiCal stratEgiEs and capaCitiEs of samplE filmmaking. Employing a historiCal mEthodology, this resEarch contExtualisEs TERROR NULLIUS within a tradition of sampling and other subversive modes of filmmaking, including SoviEt cinema, Surrealism, avant-garde found-footage films, fan remix videos, and Australian archival art films. • Introduction
Introduction Crime Film and the Messy City Many a commercial film or television production is a genuine achievement besides being a commodity. Germs of new beginnings may develop within a thoroughly alienated environment. —Siegfried Kracauer, Theory of Film ❧ n 1974, Vincent Canby wrote a piece for the New York Times, titled “New York Woes Are Good For Box Office,” that puzzled over the Ispate of films that had been made in the city over the last few years. What confused Canby was why so many recent films that portrayed New York so unfavorably—he cites Serpico (1973), The Super Cops (1974), Law and Disorder (1974), Mean Streets (1973), Death Wish (1974), For Pete’s Sake (1974), and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974)—were seemingly so popular: New York is a mess, say these films. It’s run by fools. Its citi- zens are at the mercy of its criminals who, as often as not, are protected by an unholy alliance of civil libertarians and crooked cops. The air is foul. The traffic is impossible. Services are diminishing and the morale is such that ordering a cup of coffee in a diner can turn into a request for a fat lip. (1) 1 © 2018 State University of New York Press, Albany 2 Welcome to Fear City Pointing out that New York has been a mess for much of its history, Canby was less fretful about the negative portrayal of the city in these films than curious as to why, at this moment, the mess of the city had become a subject of interest.

  • Developments in Revenge, Justice and Rape in the Cinema
Int J Semiot Law https://doi.org/10.1007/s11196-019-09614-7 Developments in Revenge, Justice and Rape in the Cinema Peter W. G. Robson1 © The Author(s) 2019 Abstract The index to the 2018 VideoHound Guide to Films suggests that under the broad heading of “revenge” there have been something in excess of 1000 flms. This appears to be the largest category in this comprehensive guide and suggests that this is, indeed, a theme which permeates the most infuential sector of popular cul- ture. These flms range from infuential and lauded flms with major directors and stars like John Ford (The Searchers (1956) and Alejandro González Iñárritu (The Revenant (2015)) to “straight to video” gorefests with little artistic merit and a spe- cifc target audience (The Hills Have Eyes (1977)). There is, as the Film Guide numbers suggest much in between like Straw Dogs (1972) and Outrage (1993). The making and re-making of “revenge” flms continues with contributions in 2018 from such major stars as Denzel Washington in The Equalizer 2 and Brue Willis in Death Wish. Within this body of flm is a roster of flms which allow us to speculate on the nature of the legal system and what individual and to a lesser extent commu- nity responses are likely where there appears to be a defcit of justice. One of the sub-groups within the revenge roster is a set of flms which focus on revenge by the victim for rape which are discussed for their rather diferent approach to the issue of justice.
