OF ACTIVE PATIENTS DECLINES FROM 89,987 TO 86,422 During the last 24 hours, a total of 11,264 COVID-19 patients have been cured. This is the highest number of recovered patients recorded in a day. Paper 2 Why in news? Sikkim has got its first airport– Pakyong Airport which is considered as an engineering marvel. Pakyong airport: Pakyong Airport is a Greenfield airport near Gangtok, the state capital of Sikkim, India. The airport, spread over 400 ha (990 acres), is located at Pakyong village about 35km (21.75 mi) south of Gangtok. It is the first Greenfield airport to be constructed in the Northeastern Region of India. As on date, Sikkim was the only state in India to not have an airport. The new Pakyong Airport in Sikkim is an engineering marvel as it is built at a height of 4,500 feet on inhospitable terrain. This is the first ever airport to be built in the state. Sikkim is yet to get connected by Indian Railways. The Pakyong Airport is about 60 kms away from the Indo China border. It has received aerodrome license from Directorate General of Civil Aviation for commercial operations. It is now the 100th operational airport in the country and is built as a part of the regional connectivity scheme UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik). As a part of this scheme, 25 airports have been added in the past few years. The Indian Air Force has already landed its Dornier 228 aircraft at the new Pakyong airport and will be able to land other types of aircraft as well. The new airport will also prove to be a boon to tourists to Sikkim.

    AIRPORTS AUTHORITY OF INDIA Press Release New Integrated Terminal Building at Goa International Airport dedicated to the nation by Union Minister for Civil Aviation Goa, 3rd December, 2013 A new Integrated Terminal building, built by Airports Authority of India has been dedicated to the Nation by Shri Ajit Singh, Union Minister for Civil Aviation in the august presence of Shri Bharat Vir Wanchoo, Governor of Goa, Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa, Shri KC Venugopal, Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Shri Francisco Sardinha, Member of Parliament, Shri Shantaram Naik, Member of Parliament and other dignitaries. The New Terminal Building at Goa is an integrated terminal building capable of handling both domestic and international operations. The terminal building is equipped with modern state of the art facilities such as 5 Nos. of passenger boarding bridges, CUTE enabled Check in counters, inline compatible baggage handling system, software based building management system, elevators and escalators. The terminal building can handle 2750 peak hour passengers at a time. The Terminal building has been built at a cost of Rs. 345cr. Keeping in view the growth of passenger traffic at Goa airport, Airports Authority of India has already given a go ahead for development of western side finger of the terminal building, at a cost of plus Rs.40cr to further enhance the handling capacity and operational efficiency.
