National General Status Working Group: 302 pp. Available in French under title: Espèces sauvages 2010: La situation générale des espèces au Canada. ii Abstract Wild Species 2010 is the third report of the series after 2000 and 2005. The aim of the Wild Species series is to provide an overview on which species occur in Canada, in which provinces, territories or ocean regions they occur, and what is their status. Each species assessed in this report received a rank among the following categories: Extinct (0.2), Extirpated (0.1), At Risk (1), May Be At Risk (2), Sensitive (3), Secure (4), Undetermined (5), Not Assessed (6), Exotic (7) or Accidental (8). In the 2010 report, 11 950 species were assessed. Many taxonomic groups that were first assessed in the previous Wild Species reports were reassessed, such as vascular plants, freshwater mussels, odonates, butterflies, crayfishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Other taxonomic groups are assessed for the first time in the Wild Species 2010 report, namely lichens, mosses, spiders, predaceous diving beetles, ground beetles (including the reassessment of tiger beetles), lady beetles, bumblebees, black flies, horse flies, mosquitoes, and some selected macromoths. The overall results of this report show that the majority of Canada’s wild species are ranked Secure. -

Canadian Field- Naturalist 131(1): 63 –68. https://doi.org/10.22621/cfn.v 131i 1. 1952 It has been suggested that European Skipper butterflies ( Thymelicus lineola ) trapped in the lips of the Showy Lady’s-slipper orchid ( Cypripedium reginae ) may interfere with pollination. This could occur through blockage of the pollinator pathway, facilitation of pollinator escape without pollination, and/or disturbance of the normal pollinators. A large population of the orchid at an Ottawa Valley site provided an opportunity to test the interference hypothesis. The number of trapped skippers was compared in 475 post-blooming flowers with regard to capsule development and thus seed development. The presence of any skippers within flowers was associated with reduced capsule development ( P = 0.0075), and the probability of capsule development was found to decrease with increasing numbers of skippers ( P = 0.0271). The extent of a negative effect will depend on the abundance of the butterflies and the coincidence of flowering time and other factors. -

Associate, Department of Zoology - Insects Field Museum of Natural History 1400 South Lake Shore Drive Chicago, Illinois 60605 Telephone (708) 485 7358 home (312) 665 7016 museum Email jwdw440(q-), m indsprinq .co m > home wagner@,fmnh .orq> museum Abstract: From May 10, 2002 through September 13, 2002, eight field trips were made to the Harbor at Waukegan, Illinois to survey the beach - dunes and swales for Odonata [dragonfly], Lepidoptera [butterfly] and Coleoptera [beetles] faunas between Midwest Generation Plant on the North and the Outboard Marine Corporation ditch at the South . Eight species of Dragonflies, fourteen species of Butterflies, and eighteen species of beetles are identified . No threatened or endangered species were found in this survey during twenty-four hours of field observations . The area is undoubtedly home to many more species than those listed in this report. Of note, the endangered Karner Blue butterfly, Lycaeides melissa samuelis Nabakov was not seen even though it has been reported from Illinois Beach State Park, Lake County . The larval food plant, Lupinus perennis, for the blue was not observed at Waukegan. The limestone seeps habitat of the endangered Hines Emerald dragonfly, Somatochlora hineana, is not part of the ecology here . One surprise is the. breeding population of Buckeye butterflies, Junonia coenid (Hubner) which may be feeding on Purple Loosestrife . The specimens collected in this study are deposited in the insect collection at the Field Museum . -

Common Name: Common Reed, Phragmites Family: Poaceae Legal Status: The Non-native Genotype of Phragmites australis was changed to a Class B Noxious Weed in 2008, after being added as a Class C in 2004. Description and Variation: Non-native genotype of Phragmites is a large perennial, grass or reed with creeping rhizomes, and often also with stolons. The woody hollow culms (stems) can grow to 12 feet tall. Leaves are lanceolate, ranging from 8-16 inches long and .5- 1.5 inches wide. The sheath of the leaf blade is glabrous (smooth, no hairs or glands), and it is loose, allowing it to twist in the wind, so the blades turn to one side. Dense silky flowers develop in mid July through October. The densely flowered panicle (floral spikelets) is feathery, tawny or purplish, 6–16 inches long, with the branches ascending. When in flower, the glumes (the lower bracts at the base of the flowering spikelet) are glabrous. The glumes are smaller than the lemmas (the bracts at the base of the individual flowers in a grass spikelet). Tillinghast ABSTRACT Purpose of the Study: My purpose was to review existing educational programs at other botanical gardens and to apply what I learned to develop environmental education curricula that can be used in the Sonoma State University Native Plants Botanical Garden. These curricula will bring about awareness of biodiversity loss and provide opportunities for action to restore that loss. Procedure: I explored the methods and philosophies of other botanical gardens by examining national and international garden organizations, and attending networking conferences. I also examined the goals of major local gardens through interviews with garden directors. Findings: Providing educational programs and creating thematic collection displays are the primary methods used by gardens today to increase public awareness of loss of biodiversity. Gardens have mission statements that help define their purpose as well as materials for guided or self-guided tours available for distribution to the public that focus on both their visitors' interests and the goals of the gardens. -

Journal of the Lepidopterists' Society 32(2), 1978, 88-96 NOTES ON THE LIFE CYCLE AND NATURAL HISTORY OF VANESSA ANNABELLA (NYMPHALIDAE) THOMAS E. DIMOCK1 III Stevens Circle, Ventura, California 93003 ABSTRACT. Observations on the life history of Vanessa annabella (Field) show the early stages to be quite variable: the eggs in rib structure, and the later larval stages in color pattern and behavior. Immature and adult behavioral charac teristics are similar to those of other Vanessa. V. annabella is usually present throughout the year in coastal southern California. Vanessa annabella (Field), the West Coast Lady, is a common and familiar butterfly in western North America. Because it can usually be found throughout the year in coastal southern California, opportunities to study its life history are almost always present. However, there are few published records available and none has included photographs of the complete life cycle. Of published reports, Dyar (1889) gave one of the more complete written accounts; Huguenin (1921) made some general observations on the life cycle and natural history; and Coolidge (1925) described the egg in detail and listed the larval foodplants. More recently Emmel & Emmel (1973) illustrated paintings of a light form of the last ins tar larva and the pupa and gave brief descriptive notes. Specimens used for the present descriptions of the life cycle stages were collected as freshly laid ova by following an ovipositing female at the type locality in Ventura, California (Dimock, 1972). The leaves on which these eggs were laid were placed in plastic containers 11 em square by 4 cm deep. -

MOTHS AND BUTTERFLIES LEPIDOPTERA DISTRIBUTION DATA SOURCES (LEPIDOPTERA) * Detailed distributional information has been J.D. Lafontaine published for only a few groups of Lepidoptera in western Biological Resources Program, Agriculture and Agri-food Canada. Scott (1986) gives good distribution maps for Canada butterflies in North America but these are generalized shade Central Experimental Farm Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0C6 maps that give no detail within the Montane Cordillera Ecozone. A series of memoirs on the Inchworms (family and Geometridae) of Canada by McGuffin (1967, 1972, 1977, 1981, 1987) and Bolte (1990) cover about 3/4 of the Canadian J.T. Troubridge fauna and include dot maps for most species. A long term project on the “Forest Lepidoptera of Canada” resulted in a Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre (Agassiz) four volume series on Lepidoptera that feed on trees in Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Canada and these also give dot maps for most species Box 1000, Agassiz, B.C. V0M 1A0 (McGugan, 1958; Prentice, 1962, 1963, 1965). Dot maps for three groups of Cutworm Moths (Family Noctuidae): the subfamily Plusiinae (Lafontaine and Poole, 1991), the subfamilies Cuculliinae and Psaphidinae (Poole, 1995), and ABSTRACT the tribe Noctuini (subfamily Noctuinae) (Lafontaine, 1998) have also been published. Most fascicles in The Moths of The Montane Cordillera Ecozone of British Columbia America North of Mexico series (e.g. Ferguson, 1971-72, and southwestern Alberta supports a diverse fauna with over 1978; Franclemont, 1973; Hodges, 1971, 1986; Lafontaine, 2,000 species of butterflies and moths (Order Lepidoptera) 1987; Munroe, 1972-74, 1976; Neunzig, 1986, 1990, 1997) recorded to date.
