Yes, if one means writing a history of the present.” —Michel Foucault, Discipline and Punish AN INTRODUCTION This book is the product of several years of loving labor and two lifetimes’ worth of conversations and refections. It was written in the spaces between. Between debates over interpretation and research; be- tween assemblies, marches, and riots; between work shifts and too little sleep; between bouts of crisis and caring for those we love; between fghts and healing; between prison visits and noise demos; between the world we live in and the anger we feel toward that world. We are neither professional authors or academics, nor professionals of any other kind; in all of these endeavors we take solace in the creative power of experimentation and the slowly acquired knowledge that comes with it. Tis book has been no diferent. Dixie Be Damned is not a “people’s history” of the South or a com- pilation of politically removed academic articles about rebellions in the region. Tis is an experiment in reading and writing history from the per- spective of two anarchists who grew up in this region. We wanted to see if sharing these stories would help illuminate why the past feels so inextrica- bly present when we fnd ourselves in confict with forces that would have us forget our histories. While this project has been deeply researched, edited, and toiled over, it is anything but objective. Objectivity is a myth, designed to attract read- ers with the allure of a linear and clean narrative that presents itself as an authoritative and authentic past. Tis objectivity protects the status quo by presenting it as natural and inevitable. Yet it has not been easy for histo- rians to craft a story of the South that accomplishes this task of sanitizing 2 | Dixie Be Damned our past. When a storyteller’s reverence for the Old South and “southern heritage” cannot avoid the obvious stains of racism and misogyny, the sto- ry switches to a carefully crafted narrative of progress—one that omits any thread of liberatory violence or confict that challenges the social peace. We fully admit that we too are storytellers. We wrote this book not to present Truth to the reader but to highlight those moments of revolt in which we have found inspiration and courage, from which we draw the possibility for a diferent historical understanding, and consequently a dif- ferent understanding of our current struggles. Te selected narratives that emerge in these pages are not an attempt to paint the entire history of this vast region in one new, singular light—that would be a dogmatic, futile, and ultimately authoritarian project. It is always the danger of writing history that, in the inevitable selection of certain episodes that highlight a specifc perspective, one risks imposing a vulgar and one-dimensional view of the world. We are open to the possibility that the “historical project” is an inherently authoritarian endeavor but remain committed to digesting and learning from the many revolts and struggles that have been hidden from us. We grow tired of reading the historical analyses of those whose desires difer so starkly from our own. We are indeed partisans, but of revolt and freedom, not of a specifc cause or group or ideology per se, and we have no intention of deifying the protagonists of this book. Like our comrades today, the rebels and insurrectionaries in these pages were not heroes or villains but humans, and while we choose to focus on their liberatory practices in this text, we would remind the reader that many of the people within held attitudes that we would now fnd contemptuous. In many of the struggles we dis- cuss, from slave rebellions to wildcats and prison riots, terrible things were done by people with whom we would likely have claimed afnity. For us, the center of gravity in this text is not the character of the individuals in- volved but the moments of rebellion and rupture, and what we can learn from them. Writing and Reading This Book Each of this book’s seven chapters highlights a unique confict or tension in a specifc region and time period of the American South. Tese episodes were chosen both spontaneously and strategically. In part they represent to us a set of dynamics and responses to conditions that illuminate larger transitions in history that we found relevant to the anarchist project, as An Introduction | 3 well as the broader desire to read history unconstrained from profession- alism and political platforms. Mostly, though, these episodes were chosen because they found us. Our writing process was not solely spent research- ing in historical archives and online databases: this project was a part of our lives long before we began writing three years ago. Te methodology of our research fought with the alchemy of our memories; we might come across a story in a book, but it is the ways in which it weaved itself with our own experience and knowledge of place that brought it to these pages. We’d like to share one example of the kind of family stories that moti- vated this book: One of our great-great-great grandfathers, Hugh Sprin- kle, was an established moonshiner and distributor before the Civil War in Yadkin County, North Carolina. When conscription came to the Yad- kin Valley—the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains—Hugh Sprinkle, along with many other non-slaveholding small farmers, chose to go un- derground rather than fght for the Confederacy. Tey left their families, friends, and homes, and hoped to return at the end of the war.

    Post-Civil War Industrialization Following the Civil War, Tennessee entered into a period of industrialization. This shift was due in part to the damage the war had inflicted on Tennessee’s economy. It was also due to investments from people outside of Tennessee. Many Northerners had been in Tennessee during the Civil War and saw opportunities for investing after the war was over. Northerners who moved South after the war to take advantage of business opportunities were called “carpetbaggers,” because many of the investors carried their belongings in satchels made from heavyweight, carpet-like fabric. Railroads were one of the first industries to be developed after the war. A number of important railroad lines ran through Tennessee before the war, but many of them had been either deliberately or accidentally damaged during the war. After the war, Tennessee’s railroads were repaired and new ones were built, and this expansion of railroads was a key factor in the growth of other industries, especially coal mining.1 Coal had been mined in the Cumberland Plateau region since before the Civil War. By the 1850s coal was replacing wood as the fuel of choice in homes and industries. As Tennessee’s railroads expanded after the war, the need for coal grew as well. Another factor that helped Tennessee’s coal mining industry evolve was the convict labor system.2 Though the 13th Amendment outlawed slavery, a clause in the amendment allowed people convicted of crimes, or convicts, to be forced to work during their prison term. WILLIAMSON: Sentimental Appropriations: Contemporary Sympathy in the Novels of Grace Lumpkin, Josephine Johnson, John Steinbeck, Margaret Walker, Octavia Butler, and Toni Morrison (Under the direction of Linda Wagner-Martin) This project investigates the appearance of the nineteenth-century American sentimental mode in more recent literature, revealing that the cultural work of sentimentalism continues in the twentieth-century and beyond. By examining working-class literature that adopts the rhetoric of “feeling right” in order to promote a proletarian ideology as well as neo-slave narratives that wrestle with the legacy of slavery, this study explores the ways contemporary authors engage with familiar sentimental tropes and ideals. Despite modernism’s influential assertion that sentimentalism portrays emotion that lacks reality or depth, narrative claims to feeling— particularly those based in common and recognizable forms of suffering—remain popular. It seems clear that such authors as Grace Lumpkin, Josephine Johnson, John Steinbeck, Margaret Walker, Octavia Butler, and Toni Morrison apply the rhetorical methods of sentimentalism to the cultural struggles of their age. Contemporary authors self-consciously struggle with sentimentalism’s gender, class, and race ideals; however, sentimentalism’s dual ability to promote these ideals and extend identification across them makes it an attractive and effective mode for political and social influence.

    Wright 1 The Role of Historic Novels in Understanding Desertion in the Civil War Presented to the History Department at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo by Caitlin Wright March, 2012 © 2012 Caitlin Wright Wright 2 In 1862 John Esten Cooke, a Confederate officer and later novelist, witnessed a young man accused of desertion, admit to it, and be sentenced to death by General J.E.B. Stuart. General Stuart was one of the most respected generals of the entire Confederacy and played integral parts in several major battles, including Gettysburg. Of Stuart’s sentiments towards desertion, Cooke wrote, “Desertion…[is] one of the deadliest crimes which a human being could be guilty.”1 Once the unnamed officer realized he had been condemned to be hanged on a tree, he started begging and pleading to be saved. He claimed he had left for Maryland and been forced to fight against the South because he had nothing to eat. Stuart hesitated after hearing his story and then turned the matter over to General Lee who, Cooke claimed, only inflicted the death penalty when he could not avoid doing so.2 In 1863, George H. Gordon, a Union soldier, witnessed the execution of a ringleader of a group of deserters. The other five had been pardoned by the President and returned to their respective units, but the instigator had been condemned to death. As the corpse was rolled into the prepared coffin, Gordon commented, “The law had been defied and so, at last, at the law was vindicated.”3 These are not isolated and chance incidents; desertion was prevalent throughout the Civil War, regardless of which army men fought for, and the punishments were usually harsh.

D. Cornell University 2019 Demonizing Unions uncovers the significance of a Biblical idiom in American novels portraying violent labor conflicts from the 1910s to the 1930s. I reveal the different ways that Upton Sinclair’s King Coal and The Coal War, Mary Heaton Vorse’s Strike!, and Ruth McKenney’s Industrial Valley employ a Biblical motif both to emphasize the God-like power of Capital over society, and to critique an emergent socio-political faith in business power. The texts I examine demonstrate how it was clear to industrialists in the early 20th century that physical violence was losing its efficacy. Therefore, much of the brunt of the physical conflict in labor struggles could be eased by waging a war of ideas to turn public opinion into an additional, ultimately more powerful, weapon against the potential of organized labor. I argue that in these texts, the besmearing of the discontented workers as violent dupes of “outside agitators,” rather than regular folks with economic grievances, takes on Biblical proportions. In turn, these authors utilize Biblical stories oriented around conceptions of power and hierarchy to illuminate the potential of ordinary humans to effect their own liberation.     BLACK CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS? by Carole E. Scott Nobody questions that the Confederate Army utilized blacks as cooks, teamsters, laborers, and body servants. There are photographs of Confederate-uniformed black musicians. However, claims made In recent years by amateur historians, some of whom are members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, that blacks served as soldiers in the Confederate army have frequently been questioned. Those who claim there were black Confederate soldiers have been accused of making what seems to some to be an extremely improbable claim in order to imply that slavery was not the cause of the Civil War. It is not difficult to find evidence that the states right that white southerners were willing to fight for was the right to enslave blacks. Much more difficult--but far from being impossible--is finding evidence that, despite this, there were black Confederate soldiers. In September, 1861, Frederick Douglass, a famous black abolitionist and former slave, wrote in his newspaper, the Douglass Monthly, "that It is now pretty well established that there are at the present moment many colored men in the Confederate army doing duty not only as cooks, servants and laborers, but as real soldiers, having muskets on their shoulders, and bullets in their pockets, ready to shoot down loyal troops, and do all that soldiers may to destroy the Federal Government and build up that of the traitors and rebels. There were such soldiers at Manassas, and they are probably there still." At that time Douglass was trying to persuade the U.S. government to enlist blacks in the army.
