    Excerpt • Temple University Press Preface FIRST HEARD Benny Golson’s exotic sound my freshman year at Princeton when Meet The Jazztet was published. Two years later, I Turning Point, his classic Mercury album with Miles Davis’s rhythm section—Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb—appeared and I became a lifelong admirer. Across more than five decades my respect has grown exponentially. In human terms, that’s a long time, merely a blink in eternity, which is what Benny Golson’s music addresses with relaxed, artistically precise lyric means. Maestro Golson is a deeply philosophical man. When you know him—and readers of his autobiography will learn from and about him in greater detail than the majority of his peers and predecessors have revealed about themselves—you soon recognize that the serious, contemplative fellow is counterbalanced by a jubilant, at moments hilarious, fellow. For a good chunk of his eighty-six years, Benny Golson was a prankster extraordinaire, the guy in the hood and in road bands who kept things on track by keeping everyone loose. Someone has to do that, and our man was among the comically best at making a positive difference with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers as well as with The Jazztet, which he co-led with Art Farmer. His presence was decisively felt, also, in Dizzy Gillespie’s late 1950s big band and, before that, in Earl Bostic’s aggregation. Goods The Hard Bop Trombone: An exploration of the improvisational styles of the four trombonist who defined the genre (1955-1964). Emmett C. Goods This dissertation examines the improvisational stylings of Curtis Fuller, Locksley “Slide” Hampton, Julian Priester and Grachan Moncur III from 1955 through 1964. In part one of this study, each musician is presented through their improvisational connections to J.J. Johnson, the leading trombonist of the Bebop era. His improvisational signatures are then traced through to the musical innovations of the Hard-Bop Trombone Era. Source material for this part of the study includes published books, dissertations, articles, online sources, discographies and personal interviews. Part two of this paper analyzes selected solos from each of the four subjects to identify the defining characteristics of the Hard-Bop Trombone Era. Evidence for these claims is bolstered by interviews conducted with the four men and their protégés. In a third and final part, a discography has been compiled for each artists during the defined era. Through historical analysis of these four artists’ music and recording of first-hand accounts from the artists themselves, this document attempts to properly contextualize the Hard-Bop Trombone Era as unique and important to the further development of the jazz trombone.

    1 The TENORSAX of BENNY GOLSON Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: April 8, 2016 2 Born: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Jan. 25, 1929 Introduction: We always appreciated Benny Golson’s warm tenor saxophone sound and soon realized he was one of the major soloists on his instrument in the period 1955-1965. Later he visited Norway several times. Early history: Studied piano at 9 and switched to tenorsax at 14. Attended Harvard University in Washington and stated to gig around Philadelphia late 40's. Numerous recordings in Philadelphia ca. 1950 under the leadership of Tiny Grimes and Jimmy Preston. Left Philadelphia with Bull Moose Jackson 1951. This band included Tadd Dameron who encouraged him to study arranging and composing. Two years later he played in a band led by Dameron. Left Dameron to join Lionel Hampton (1953). Several short stays with Johnny Hodges 1954, Earl Bostic 1954-56’ but began to make a name for himself as a member of Dizzy Gillespie’s orchestra (1956-57). With Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers (1958-59). He then worked as a freelance in New York and studied with the composer Henry Brant. From 1959 to 1962, with Art Farmer, he was the leader of the Jazztet, a group with varying personnel that proved a successful vehicle for Golson’s writing. Message: Benny Golson was an important composer and arranger, it is enough to mention “Stablemates”, “I Remember Clifford”, Whisper Not?”, “Along Came Betty”, “Blues March” and “Are You Real?”.
