    ANALYSIS The Wings of the Dove (1902) Henry James (1843-1916) “James, somewhat hampered by the prudery imposed on him by English social conventions, devised a complicated and rather bizarre plot. Kate Croy is in love with a journalist, Merton Densher, but will not marry him until he is financially secure. She becomes acquainted with Milly Theale, an American heiress, and learns that an ailment from which Milly is suffering dooms her to an early death. Kate concocts a fantastic scheme; without revealing her motive she tells Densher to take an interest in Milly, who promptly falls in love with him and makes a will leaving him all her money. But an English lord, who himself had the notion of marrying Milly and inheriting her wealth, learns of the scheme and reveals it to Milly. She dies soon after and Densher receives a large check for his legacy. He offers to marry Kate if she will consent to let him destroy the check, but she demands a recompense: he must swear he is not in love with Milly’s memory. This he refuses to do; and the deal is off. The book is regarded as a culmination of James’s final style, along with The Ambassadors and The Golden Bowl; for many readers its difficulties are redeemed by Milly’s charm and fortitude. An opera based on the novel was produced in New York (1961).” Max J. Makalenin amac›, bu kavramlar›n temelinin insan ilişkileri ve karakterlerin d›ş dünya ile olan ilişkilerinde yatt›ğ›n›, ve yazar›n, kulland›ğ› simgeler ve imgeler yoluyla bu kavramlar› güçlendirdiğini ortaya koymakt›r. Her iki romanda da materyalizm çok önemli bir yere sahip olmas›na rağmen karakterlerin duygular›na ve düş güçlerine de ayn› derecede yer verilmiş ve iyilik ve kötülük kavramlar›n›n net bir biçimde ay›rt edilemiyeceği gösterilmiştir. Anahtar sözcükler: iyilik, kötülük, simgeler, imgeler, materyalizm, insan ilişkileri Abstract The article aims to analyze the concepts of good and evil in Henry James’s The Wings of the Dove and The Golden Bowl. The main argument is that James’s extensive use of symbolism and imagery helps to reinforce the illustration of these concepts and that good and evil seem to reside in human relations and the characters’ relatedness to the world outside themselves. Although materialism occupies a central role in these novels, the characters’ feelings and imagination are also probed into with the result that the interdependence of good and evil is revealed. The two novels can be seen as two parts of a single unit in these respects.

No presente estudo, na base da narrativa fílmica de The Wings of the Dove, esteve o romance homónimo de Henry James. Apesar de se tratar de uma adaptação livre, o argumentista Hossein Amini e o realizador Iain Softley encontraram um equivalente à prosa de James, substituindo, muitas vezes, os diálogos por gestos ou expressões que revelam o lado emocional das personagens, mantendo intacta a temática da fragilidade da natureza humana. A coerência interna do filme é dada pela divisão em três actos, cada um deles separado por um ponto de viragem que conduz a história numa nova direcção. Quanto às personagens, a protagonista, Kate, deseja casar-se com Merton, um jornalista da classe média, enfrentando a oposição da tia. Encontra a solução para o seu problema em Milly, a jovem americana rica, de cuja fortuna pretende apoderar-se, mas vai enfrentar conflitos diversos, um deles o interior, em que se debate com a sua própria consciência.

    Henry James, The Wings of the Dove Programme d’Agrégation 2020-21 texte de cadrage Proposed by Richard Anker, Université Clermont Auvergne The Wings of the Dove (1902) is doubtless the most obscure of the three most famous novels belonging to James’s late or major phase. Compared with the sense of harmony and symmetry that has often appealed to readers of The Ambassadors (1903) and of The Golden Bowl (1904), Wings is striking in part for the very absence of these values, notably in Volume Two where scenic condensation and narrative gaps tend to generate a sense of incomplete revelation and suspended meaning. James was fully aware of what he didn’t hesitate to call the “deformity” of the work, and discusses it at some length in the 1909 preface he wrote for the New York Edition, where blame for the perceived anomalies of construction is placed most notably upon the displaced center of the work’s composition, which he situates in Book Fifth of Volume One. Without directly associating the “misplaced pivot” of his composition with the scene of Milly’s encounter with the Bronzino portrait (Book Fifth, Chapter Two), many critics agree that much of the structural impetus of the work turns upon this episode, where the American girl encounters at the very height of her melodramatic success and social triumph in London an indisputable presentiment of her mortality. Pictorial values occupy therefore a central place in the compositional structure of Wings and in the overall framework of its representational logic, as is often the case in James’s fiction.
