15-Day Egypt – Jordan “Journeys of Moses” Tour with 4-Day Nile Cruise May 9-22 2021 Join us in a unique opportunity to follow the footsteps of Moses and the Children of Israel in the very lands of their sojourns. Our scriptural and historic journey will traverse Lower and Upper Egypt and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. We will sail on the Nile, ride camels, walk through magnificent temples and tombs, explore sandstone monuments, and view spectacular vistas. Both ancient and modern cultures and histories will blend together with scriptural insights. Day 1 (Sunday, May 9) Depart home city to Cairo, Egypt. Day 2 (Monday, May 10) Arrive Cairo. Transfer to our hotel for overnight. Day 3 (Tuesday, May 11) Cairo, Memphis, Saqqara, Giza. After breakfast our first visit is to Memphis (capital of the Pyramid Age) and Saqqara (Djoser's famous step pyramid); we'll then transfer to Giza. We will begin with a camel ride to the world-famous Pyramids of Giza, classified among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Here we'll stand in awe of their size and magnificent engineering. We will also visit the boat museum to see the barge used for one of the pharaohs. Then we will come face to face with the 5,000-year-old Sphinx. Our visit to the Pharaonic Village will help us see life as it existed at the time of the pharaohs. (B, D) Day 4 (Wednesday, May 12) Cairo flight to Aswan. This morning we fly to Aswan City. After checking in to our cruise ship, the Blue Shadow of the Princess Nile Cruise Line, we will have a lunch onboard and then visit the Philae Temple, the High Dam, and the Unfinished Obelisk. Our dinner and overnight will be back onboard our cruise ship. (B, L, D) Day 5 (Thursday, May 13) Nile Cruise Day – Kom Ombo Temple After breakfast, visit the Graeco-Roman Temple at Kom Ombo. The temple at Kom Ombo is about 30 miles north of Aswan and was built during the Graeco- Roman period (332 BC-AD 395). The temple is unique because it is a double temple, dedicated to Sobek the crocodile god, and Horus the falcon-headed god. The layout combines two temples in one with each side having its own gateways and chapels. (Sobek is associated with the wicked god Seth, the enemy of Horus. In the Horus myth the allies of Seth made their escape by changing themselves into crocodiles. Sobek’s chief sanctuary was at Kom Ombo, where there were once huge numbers of crocodiles.) After lunch we continue down the Nile River (north) to Edfu and its magnificent temple. Dinner and shipboard entertainment will highlight our evening. (B, L, D) Day 6 (Friday, May 14) Nile Cruise Day – Temple of Horus at Edfu, Pass Through Locks of Esna. Our first visit this morning is to the Temple of Horus in Edfu. The Temple of Edfu, the second largest temple in Egypt, is also known as the Temple of Horus (the falcon-headed God) is the most beautiful and well-preserved of all the Egyptian temples. Returning to our ship, we have lunch as we continue down the Nile to the Temple of Esna. Lovers of Egyptian mythology will enjoy this ancient shrine located near the Nile River. The Esna Temple or Temple of Khnum is a sacred shrine at Esna dedicated to several gods including Khnum (god of creation and the Nile River), Heka (god of magic), Horus (god of victory) and Neith (god of war). Esna Temple, built in ancient Latapolis (about 485 miles south of Cairo), holds an interesting representation of ancient Egyptian astronomy on its roof. Returning to the ship, we will sail down the Nile through the Esna lock and continue to Luxor. (B, L, D) Day 7 (Saturday, May 15) West Bank of Nile, Valleys of the Kings and Nobles, Hatshepsut’s Funerary Temple, Colossi of Memnon, Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, flight to Cairo. Arriving in Luxor we disembark our cruise ship and visit the fabulous tombs (including King Tut’s) and funerary temples on the West Bank. Crossing the Nile once again we will tour the famous temples of Luxor and Karnak (the largest religious building ever constructed). Dinner and a night flight to Cairo will end our stay in Upper Egypt. (B, D) Day 8 (Sunday, May 16) Cairo/ (Nile Delta) Alexandria, flight to Amman. Today we travel north through the Egypt Delta to the famous port city of Alexandria, named after Alexander the Great. Here we will visit the Mediterranean port, the Graeco- Roman Museum, Pompey’s Pillar, the Catacombs, Roman Amphitheater, Quarry Bay Citadel, and other fascinating sites before heading through the Nile Delta south to Cairo for a welcome dinner and overnight. (B, L, D) Day 9 (Monday, May 17) Cairo, Egyptian National Museum, Old Cairo, Citadel and Alabaster Mosque, Khan Khalili Bazaar, Old Cairo, flight to Amman, Jordan. After breakfast, our first stop today is the famous Cairo Egyptian Museum. Here discoveries from King Tut's Tomb are on display, as well many other interesting exhibits from the various periods of ancient Egyptian history. We will tour Old Cairo, the Citadel, Mohammed Ali Alabaster Mosque, and pay a visit to the world-famous Khan Khalili Bazaar for shopping. After dinner we fly to Amman, Jordan and overnight. (B, L, D) Day 10 (Tuesday, May 18) Amman to Petra via Mt. Nebo, Madaba, Machaerus, Karak Castle. This morning we journey to the western mountains where Moses made his last stopping place before departing the tribes of Israel and entrusting their leadership to Joshua at Mt. Nebo. After taking in the panorama of modern Israel and the Palestinian Territories and reviewing the events on this mount, we journey southeast along the King’s Highway through the biblical lands of Moab and Edom (tribal inheritances of Rueben), we stop at Madaba where the oldest mosaic map of the Holy Land is displayed on the floor of the Byzantine church. Then we travel further south to view the New Testament site of the 1st Century AD palace of Herod Antipas – Machaerus. From this vantage point we can look across the Dead Sea to the Judean fortress of Masada and recall also that this site of Machaerus is where John the Baptist was beheaded. Still further south we stop al-Karak, one of the largest crusader castles in the Levant. Along the Kings Highway we will pass many of the biblical cities and locations from the days of the Patriarchs through the Exodus of the Children of Israel. We continue traveling south to Petra, a marvel long before Indiana Jones and the Holy Grail. Dinner and overnight at Petra. (B, D) Day 11 (Wednesday, May 19) Petra explorations and journey to Amman via the Desert Road. After breakfast we will head to the ancient ruins of Petra by entering through the Siq. Most people recognize Petra for the Treasury Building, but there is so much more to see. Petra dates as early as 9,000 BC and possible established in the 4th century BC as the capital city of the Nabataean Kingdom. After lunch we travel along the Desert Highway to Amman (ancient Philadelphia) and visit its famous bazaar. Dinner and overnight at Amman. (B, D) Day 12 (Thursday, May 20) Amman and northern journey to Jordan River Valley, Pella, Umm Qais (Gadara) Irbid, Amman Today we make our journey to Pella, one of the cities of the Decapolis, where the 1st Century Christian community fled from Jerusalem before its destruction as prophesied by Jesus Christ. We follow the length of the Jordan River (possibly the path of Joseph and Mary, who came from Nazareth on their way to Bethlehem). Many of the Prophets, Judges and Kings and even the Savior and His disciples also came this way in their journeys, including climbing up on the Dome of Gilead. We stop at the ruins of Gadara (another one of the ten Greek cities of Decapolis) today known as Umm Qais. From here we can have a view of the Sea of Galilee, recount the biblical stories in this region in the Roman Theater. Heading south, we will pass through Irbid. We return to Amman and our last night on our unforgettable journey in the “Journeys of Moses”. (B, D) Day 13-14 (Friday-Saturday, May 21-22) Jerash, Jabbok River, Al- Maghtas (Bethany beyond the Jordan, Bethbara), Amman, travel to home destinations. After breakfast in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan we will descend to the Jordan River Valley once more to a site close to the city of Palms, Jericho. We visit at Al-Maghtas or “Bethany Beyond Jordan,” the spot where Joshua and the Children of Israel likely crossed into the Promised Land. Here also is the probable site of Bethbara where the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist occurred. We will reminisce those events as we too may choose to dip our fingers in its waters. Heading north and east from the Jordan River Valley, we will arrive at the monumental Graeco-Roman city of Jerash, visiting its magnificent ruins and recall Old and New Testament events that occurred near The oldest surviving original cartographic depiction of the here. Leaving Jerash on our journey south, we will cross the Holy Land and especially Jerusalem. It dates to the 6th Jabbok River near Penuel and recall that the patriarch Jacob was century AD, St George Monastery, Madaba, Jordan. renamed “Israel” at its banks after wrestling with an angel all the night. We return to Amman for a farewell dinner and final shopping and our last night on our unforgettable travel adventure in the “Journeys of Moses”.
