YELLOW SOCKS DAY Sports celebrities pitch for a cure Legends of the NRMA Brisbane Broncos Allan Langer, Darren Lockyer, Kevin and Kerrod Walters, Gorden Tallis, and Shane Webcke are taking to the Softball diamond to ‘Play for a cure’, battling it out against a team of Softball legends in the next big Play for a Cure Yellow Socks Charity Softball Challenge. To be held on Saturday 8th February at the Downey Park Softball Complex, the event will be hosted by the Play for a Cure Foundation and the Brisbane Softball Association, with the support of the ‘Deadly Choices’ Health Initiative. Softball legends will include three time Olympian Brooke Wilkins, current Australian captain & Olympian Stacey Porter and current ‘Aussie Spirit’ players Mel Weaver and Chelsea Forkin. Australia’s longest serving softball captain and Olympian Joyce Lester will also be on hand to entertain the crowd. The inspiration for the event comes from the sad passing of Jannita Dunn, elder sister of Rugby League great Gorden Tallis and Deb McColm the wife of former long time Broncos kicking coach Graham McColm, in late 2009. Both women had strong ties to the Brisbane Broncos and Brisbane Softball Association and for Graham and Gorden it was only fitting to create an event in remembrance of them and to broaden the focus on others impacted by cancer. “I feel humbled to see the people who are selflessly giving their time to find a cure for cancer” McColm stated. Since the inaugural event four years ago, the Yellow Socks Charity Softball Challenge has grown each year and is expected to attract its biggest crowd this year. The day will begin with a warm up session of Touch Rugby League before players take to the pitch to battle it out in the name of cancer. Aside from being treated to a star studded softball match, attendees can also take part in free rock-climbing, face painting, Zumba and other fun activities coordinated by the ‘Deadly Choices’ crew. Deadly Choices is a health initiative aimed at engaging with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to promote healthy living and regular health check-ups. It aligns with the Play for a Cure Foundation and Brisbane Softball Association’s promotion of sport and healthy living for all. Manager of the Deadly Choices initiative Ian Lacey sees the Yellow Socks Charity Softball Challenge as a perfect opportunity to draw light on an important initiative while encouraging more people to get in and get a health check. “It is important that we support this event to encourage more people to come in and get a health check while raising awareness around finding a cure for cancer,” Lacey said. The event also aims to bring to light the great social and health opportunities involved in taking part in the sport of softball. The teams will suit up in yellow socks representing the daffodil flower used internationally as the flower and colour of HOPE for a cure to cancer. Fans will also get the unique opportunity to win a spot playing on each team by getting online and auctioning for a position in this wonderful event. To win a place on the team got to www.playforacure.com.au/auction-page/ and click on the bid tab. The top two bids will win a spot on the teams. The auction will open on Thursday 30th January at 5pm and close on Thursday 6th February at 5pm. The successful bidders will be contacted by email with payments accepted through PayPal. All are welcome to attend this one-of-a-kind charity event. Admission is free but a gold coin donation on entry would be appreciated. There will be a major raffle with great prizes, plenty of food, drinks, & the aforementioned fun participation activities, which will add to the festive atmosphere of the day. All funds raised will go to support cancer research programs supported through the Play for a Cure Foundation and to junior softball development through the Brisbane Softball Association. Tax deductable donations can also be made directly by visiting www.playforacure.com.au/news/yellow-socks-softball-challenge- feb-2014/ To see the Broncos’ report on last year’s Yellow Socks Charity Softball Challenge, click on the following link - www.broncos.com.au/news-display/2013-Ep-2--Yellow-Sox-Challenge/74293 Media are also encouraged to attend the event.

TO: NZRL Staff, Districts and Affiliates and Board FROM: Cushla Dawson DATE: 28 October 2008 RE: Media Summary Wednesday 29 October to Monday 03 November 2008 Slater takes place among the greats: AUSTRALIA 52 ENGLAND 4. Billy Slater last night elevated himself into the pantheon of great Australian fullbacks with a blistering attacking performance that left his coach and Kangaroos legend Ricky Stuart grasping for adjectives. Along with Storm teammate and fellow three-try hero Greg Inglis, Slater turned on a once-in-a-season performance to shred England to pieces and leave any challenge to Australia's superiority in tatters. It also came just six days after the birth of his first child, a baby girl named Tyla Rose. Kiwis angry at grapple tackle: The Kiwis are fuming a dangerous grapple tackle on wing Sam Perrett went unpunished in last night's World Cup rugby league match but say they won't take the issue further. Wing Sam Perrett was left lying motionless after the second tackle of the match at Skilled Park, thanks to giant Papua New Guinea prop Makali Aizue. Replays clearly showed Aizue, the Kumuls' cult hero who plays for English club Hull KR, wrapping his arm around Perrett's neck and twisting it. Kiwis flog Kumuls: New Zealand 48 Papua New Guinea NG 6. A possible hamstring injury to Kiwis dynamo Benji Marshall threatened to overshadow his side's big win over Papua New Guinea at Skilled Park last night. Arguably the last superstar left in Stephen Kearney's squad, in the absence of show-stoppers like Roy Asotasi, Frank Pritchard and Sonny Bill Williams, Marshall is widely considered the Kiwis' great white hope.

However, these successes have largely failed to translate into Indigenous health outcomes. Given the continued dominance of a colonial imagination, little research exists that values Indigenous perspectives, knowledges and practice in health promotion. This thesis contributes to addressing this knowledge gap. An ethnographic study of health promotion practice was undertaken within an Indigenous-led health promotion team, to learn how practitioners negotiated tensions of daily practice.

  • Two Kiwis on Their Way out of NRL: Kiwis Coach Stephen Kearney Is Philosophical About Two Kiwis Leaving the NRL to Pick up More Money in England
TO: NZRL Staff, Districts and Affiliates and Board FROM: Cushla Dawson DATE: 18 May 2009 RE: Media Summary Tuesday 12 April to Monday 18 May 2009 They are happy helping others: One helps out people from the other side of the world, one mentors the troubled kids at her league club, and another just looks after his mum. What the five winners of this year's Young Community Leaders Awards have in common, though, is a dedication to social work, rather than their social lives. Emma Daken, Teresa Edge, Henare Mihaere, Fofo Molia and Libby Tuite were chosen from nearly 60 nominees to receive the awards, which recognised Wellingtonians under the age of 25 working in the not-for- profit sector, either as a volunteer or in a paid position. Anzac test to stay - and it'll be in Brisbane: Despite the Kiwis' dire results in mid-year tests across the Tasman, the Anzac league test is likely to survive and remain in Brisbane because the New Zealand Rugby League cannot afford to host the game. NZRL chairman Ray Haffenden admits there are conflicting views about the test's value after New Zealand's run of eight successive defeats but has given it his backing and said the league cannot afford to scrap the game, nor host it. No sign of league World Cup cash: Six months since the World Cup final, the much-trumpeted tournament profit apparently still sits in a Rugby League International Federation bank account. New Zealand has not been told what the final profit is, or how it will be distributed and RLIF boss Colin Love couldn't be reached last night.
