Convenant Secretary’s Report I have now completed my second year In mi* post and am pleased to report mat me concerted effort to encourage convenanted subscription* has resulted In slxty- three new one* being taken out mi* year. Tbls Is in addition to an exfsiting twenty- mree convenants from previous sources, and has resulted in me Guild being able to reclaim £168 of tax deemed to have been deducted at source. I would Ilka to thank those members who have made convenants, and me District Secretaries for their assistance. However It l* still apparent mat many members who could covenant have failed to do so, given mat me Guild has an adult membership of 496. The response o f members has varied, me district with the smallest membership (North-West) ha* produced thirty- two new convenants, over half me total) Therefore I urge all members where possible to convenant their subscription as the procedure* are relatively simple. I will gladly assist members with mis task and answer any queries they may have. The ‘Friend*’ have also received seven new convenanted donation* during the year, and tax amounting to £240 will be reclaimed on mis. Hence a total of £408 has been generated for me Guild mi* year through convenanted payments which would otherwise have been lost, so do please convenant your payments In future. My ringing career, though, doe* span some 35 year* or more, firstly In Gloucestershire, then In Oxford, Liverpool and . However since the AGM last April when you appointed me a* the Guild’s General Secretary, I have attempted to attend as marry of the District's meetings as 1 could to try to get to know you. Apologies to the NW District I promise I will visit you during 1990. Looking back over the past 9 months, I believe the most Important event to have been the launch of the 'Friends of Suffolk Bells’ appeal. The county is blessed with many fine rings of bells, but at the same time ha* many tower* that are sadly In need of restoration. We, a* ringers, all derive pleasure from ringing the bells In the county, and so must play our part In ensuring that the ringers of the future also have bells on which to practice our ancient and unique art We cannot leave It ail to the small rural communities to maintain bell* for our pleasure. The appeal needs the support of all of u* The Annual Meeting thl* year took place at Haiesworth. A good number of members converged on the church during the afternoon, along three different routes, where, following a short period of ringing, the service was held. An excellent tea was provided in the nearby church hall by the local ringers and friends, after which members returned to the church for the meeting Itself. There It was reported that Mr Edmund Vesty had accepted the invitation to become the new patron of the Guild. The decision to Increase Guild subscriptions was ratified. A new post of Convenarrting Secretary was created , and Mr Andrew Fisk agreed to take on this Important work. The Chairman and all Guild officer* with the exception of Secretary and Auditor were reelected. The new Auditor Is Mr Peter Faier*. The retiring Secretary, Mr John Girt, was created a VlcePresident in recognition of hi* many years of service to the Guild, and was presented with a gift of a glass paperweight from the members of the Guild. The Management Committee, and various subcommittee* have met regularly throughout the year, and members of these committees must be thanked for the hard work and dedication that they put Into their various tasks, much of which take* place behind the scene*. Those of us who attended the Guild Seminar at the end of September found It a most worthwhile and constructive afternoon. The discussions that took place (thl* year the topic was Recruitment and Training) were very wide-ranging, with a variety of views expressed, and valuable conclusions were reached. It Is an occasion that I can honestly recommend to other*. Also thanks to the hospitality <>i Amanda and Brian Whiting, the event proved once again to be a very enjoyable social event The Training Day too proved to be as sucessful as ever and thanks must be given to the organisers tutors, helpers and students for making It so. The St Mary le Tower, Ipswich, band once again reached the final of the National 12 bell striking competition, reminding the country that Suffolk still remains a centre of excellance for ringing. In addition, a band representing the Guild this year won me East of 10 bell striking competlttmi . We congratulate those who took part in these events, and wish success to those who will be chosen to take part In 1990. Finally, as I com* to me end of my first year in office, I would like to thank John Girt and my fellow officers for me help and encouragement mat may have given me during me change over. I consider It a privilege to have been Invited to join such a dedicated team. I have found It a most en|oyable experience, and I hop* mat I will be able to get to meet more of you during 1990. Bruce Wakefield 10 Ringing Master’s Report 1989 w m a relatively quiet year for the Guild. The A.G.M. saw the departure of two longstanding officers, namely John Girt and Trevor Bailey. Bruce Wakefield ha* made a very good start as Guild Secretary in his quiet efficient manner and deserves all our thanks for taking on this onerous task. Not many people would have the courage to try to follow In John’s footsteps. Trevor was not re elected to the Central Council, following a period of faithful service for a* long as I can remember - at least 20 years. I should like to record my thanks to him. The Guild Outing was again held in April and as usual well supported. Towers visited were Aidgaie (8), Comhlll(12), St Andrew's, Lambeth(8), St John's, Waterloo Road(8) and Queen Anne Tower, Imperial College(10). The latter provided lots of entertainmenhfrights due to the tower sway, following a long climb. I hope everyone who attended ha* now recovered! The Guild Striking Competitions were held at Buxhall (8 bell) and Stowmarket (8 bell). There were good entries for both competitions, which produced an encouragingly high standard. Both trophies were won by St Mary Le Tower but not without a fight My congratulations to them for maintaining their high standards. The peal week did not produce as many peals as I had hoped for various reason*. However firsts were scored In peals which otherwise may not have been attempted. A seminar was held In September on teaching beginners and their recruitment and retention. This produced some exciting debate on methods to be used to teach handling. At the end of the afternoon lots of Ideas had been discussed and I think everyone benefited. It Is a shame that this now established Guild event doe* not attract more members. October saw yet another sucessful Training Day, only marred by Buxhall tenor being out of action due to a faulty clock hammer. Many Guild members had the opportunity to Improve their skills through theory and practical session*. The event ended with an Inter-district quiz won by the South- East District The quarter peal week In November was, like the peal week, a little disappointing In terms of number* rung. However It Is clear that a lot of them were specially arranged and less experienced members were helped to do something different St Mary Le Tower hosted one of the eliminating heats for the National 12 bell competition, In which they finished a very good second. Unfortunately they did not do as well In the final a* In 1988, finishing seventh. A band representing the Guild competed for the first time in the Eastern Counties 10 bell Competition held at Peterborough Cathedral. The team won and a very handsome trophy Is currently on display at St Mary Le Tower. It would be encouraging to see members from ALL district* volunteering their service* In 1990, rather than leaving It to the South East District to provide the band. Al the time of writing, there would not appear to be a* many peals rung as In previous years, but n •veriheless there are some good achievement*. Some of these are listed below: - Peal* noth: Marie Carson;100th Winston Glritng;200tti Josephine Beever,250tti Robin Allum;800tli Pat Balley,900th Trevor Balley,1000th Major, Martin Thortey. Conductor 175th Alan Mayle;200th David SalterI

200111 Robin Allum, Josephine Beever;350th David Salter, 600th Pat Bailey 200th a* conductor for the Guild: David Salter 250th together Mary and Robin Allum 550th together Pat and Trevor Bailey FI ret pealer* Include: John Hobson. Hazel Meeldng, Brian Martin, Karen Wood*. Handbell ringing continue* to Increase, notably by the Moat* Tye / Fem Cottage band. Thl* year ha* seen peal* of 7 surprise minor and up to 12 methods minor (the most for the Guild), Cambridge, Yorkshire Major and Little Bob Royal. Many people or whole (or nearly whole) band* rang their first In a method or most methods. My apologies for any notable achievement* I have missed or are not published at the time of writing thl* report Turning now to Friends of Suffolk Bell*, a successful launch was held In July with virtually every rlngable peal of bell* being rung. A splendid effort by district officers and members. We received a great deal of publicity In the local press and on both the local television news programmes. However the appeal has floundered to a greater extent since then mainly due to poor attendances at committee meetings. I cannot believe that there are not at least two people In each district who are not concerned enough about the future of Suffolk bell* and ringing to devote some time and effort towards this appeal. Yet there are still district* with vacancies on this Important committee or representative* who, for a variety of reasons, find It difficult to attend meetings. The options are 3imple:elther we have an active and productive FOSB committee which generates ideas to raise money and coordinate* their Implementation, or subscriptions are raised to a realistic level to ensure that the Restoration Fund Is adequately resourced. There was more than mild concern at the last Management Committee about the fact that we were being asked to commit In grants more than we actually have available or Indeed are likely to have by the end of 1990. Although It Is tremendous that there I* a lot of restoration work planned In the county, again the options are simple, either bolster the Restoration Fund or we step back 15 years and reduce grants to pathetic amounts. I favour the first option. Supposing we raised subscriptions by £4.00 a year which was all transferred Into the Restoration Fund, this would generate about £2,500 at current membership levels - One average size giant nowadays. Perhaps now Is the time to forget about fund raising actlvttle* and realistically Increase our subscriptions to cover our likely needs and also possibly start to set a capital fund, which In time would reduce the need to Increase subscrltlons so frequently. Often quoted by those advocating Increase* In subscrttlons are Golf Clubs, however they are an extreme case, the example I put to you I* that of the Girl Guide, who pay* a sub. each week. Each year the Guide has to pay a minimum of £12.00, often mors, with little direct return. Any extra actfvltle* other than the weekly meeting have to be funded by the Guides participating. Perhaps we should consider £12.00 as a starting point - £1.00 a month, possibly paid by standing order. The Guild Seminar In September which will be an open forum to discus* the structure of the Guild, It* policies and actlvttle*, will I am sure address the type* of Issues such a* funding, subscriptions, etc., so If you have strong views, make sure you are there to air tham rather than moan afterwards. Returning to less contentious Issues, looking back on my seven years as master, I have been fortunate to preside over two Guild Anniversary Dinners, both of which are memorable occasion*. Peal ringing ha* flourished, particularly 12 belt peals, and 1988 saw a new record number. Restoration work ha* Increased with the Guild taking on a far more active role. Bands from Suffolk are now competing on regular basts In the National 12 bell Competition and the Eastern Counties 10 ben Competition. I cannot end thl* report without mentioning James Smith, who ha* now taken up residence In Australia. James ha* in recent year* broken Into new ground for the Guild In peal ringing and throughout remained loyal to hi* band at Rushmere and to the South East District, where he held office until December 1988. He is sadly missed for his tireless contribution to our art Our loss Is Australia's gain. 12

There are many people I would Ilka to thank for their support over the pa*t seven year* but the Report Editor will not thank me If I do It here. I would particularly like to thank the other Guild Officer*, especially John Girt for hi* unfailing padence with me, the Recruitment and Training Committee, especially Amanda Whiting for taking a lot of work off my shoulder*, and all the District officer* who have always made me feel welcome at their function*. 1 hope my successor enjoy* die same support Stephen D Pettman

The Suffolk Guild Handbells Trustees Report We are very pleased to report that very good use ha* been made of the two larger set* of handbell* throughout the year. A record £60 ha* been received In donations towards the cost of insurance and maintenance. The newly restored Taylor* set of twenty five bell*, has been In particular demand for both tune and method ringing. Several peals have been ning on them, including a Suffolk Guild peal of Yorkshire S.Ma|or just prior to Christmas. The Management Committee ha* asked the Trustee* to obtain estimates for the restoration of the Warner* and Dobsons sets of bells, both of which are in fairly poor condition. The Shaw* set of sixteen was restored some twenty years ago and are still in good order. W* hope dial good use will continue to be made of the bell* In 1990. Please contact either Trustee if you would like to borrow a set Amanda M Whiting Winnie Lockwood Librarian’ The Library continues to grow due to donations of books both old and new. There have been a large number of loan* by the library, still remaining a valuable scource of material for those needing information. For those who are not aware the library contain* many books, lists of compositions, scrap books full of cuttings, some photographs and postcards, the Guild Album, past reports of the Suffolk Guild and pre Guild reports, a full set of Ringing Worlds dating back to 1952, also a couple of handbells plus many other article*. They are available to any member of the Guild. I am giving up the post of Honorary Librarian this year and Jonathan Williamson has kindly (and bravely) offered to stand for election to this position. Helen Leeson 13 Public Relations Report ‘Public Relation*’ I* what It* name implies, our relationship & communication with the listening or Interested public. So we’re all P.R.O’s - or should be ! Thank* to those who, In 1989 have helped promote the Guilds’ work. Elsewhere you will read of progress on various restoration projects In hand. Talks have been given at Framllngham, exhibition* & open day* at Worllngworth & Metfleld (a most Imaginative weekend). The length of time taken to bring their endeavours to function Indicate* to me how Important our Involvement & FINANCIAL SUPPORT is. We really must move on from the the notion that the squire or that mythical ‘someone’ will pay for the work. The maintenance of the heritage of bell* that Is ours is now just a duty, It Is a privilege. Another sucessful open weekend was Bredfleld\Dallinghoo. The Revd. Keith Jones of St Mary Le Tower spoke on bells on Radio Orwell, & wrote in the Evening Star as hi* Christmas message. He a Iso vested Simon Rudd's mastership of the Tower within the Parish Eucharist thus, Involving two hund red people or so. I gave talks on your behalf at Newmarket, Wickham Market British Telecom (very captive audience there*) and our farm engagement for the Norwich Rotary Club, at the Invitation of the Mancroft Master, Michael Roberts. An interesting event for Ranald Clousion and I was the French Art* Council video on bells and ringing In Britain, resulting in two visits to East Bergholt We thank the locals for demonstrating their skill* to Madame Golfler and her team so well, thus enabling u* to keep our long forgotten french to a minimum ! George W.Ptpe Maintenance Officer’s Report The list below of towers featured in the tiiree committee meetings and those which have come to my attention during 1989 shows yet another busy year for maintenance in Suffolk towers. However, this list Include* several Item* of work still outstanding work which require* local support and enthusiasm perhaps cleaning down and painting the bell frame work which without this support will unfortunately remain outstanding. Thanks are due to all those who have helped in anyway during the year. Aldeburgh:Bell* & fitting* inspected by Taylors no need for repacking bearing* at present All iron work has been painted. George Broom - OtJey George ('Dawdy1) learnt to ring at Clopton where his father was a call change ringer before him. A countryman through and through, he was a great raconteur, It was he who told me of the one ooceslon when Joseph Last at Burgh, who habitually placed his pocket watch on the floor for a peal, emphasised how good the ringing had been by bringing his foot hard down. The watch flew In lo a Ihoutand pieces ! TECHNICAL ADVISER’S REPORT The past year ha* been a quiet one with regard to re*toratfon work, but there ha* still been a considerable amount of effort which should bear fruit In the near future. At Monewden It I* proposed to rehang the six bell* In a new frame at a lower level In the tower and at the same time install a ringing gallery. It I* planned to remove the bell* from the tower and transport them to the foundry early In the new year. Plan* to restore the eight bell* at Framlingham are progressing and It is hoped to complete the work during 1990, the 800th anniversary of the castle. At Qrundlsburgh fund raising is In progress with the aim of overhauling the existing ring of ten and augmenting them to twelve bell*. The eight bells at Cotton are only rung occasionally and are In reasonable order, but the metal frame and steel support girders, dating from 1961, are very rusty and some woodworm Is to be found In the elm headstocks. Both of these problems should be dealt wtth as a matter of urgency to prevent any further deterioration. At Bures the bell* and their fittings remain in quite good order, but the tenor clapper ha* excessive sideways roll due to a worn timber connector which need* replacing. The main problem at Brome Is the badly cracked base of the round tower and the state of it* outer casing. These belt* were last overhauled In about 1920 by ‘Days of Eye' when they were hung wtth new fittings In a new oak frame. There Is now woodworm Infestation due to bird debris being brought Into the tower via defective netting over the louvred openings. At Hlnderclay the six bells were overhauled and rehung with new fittings In a metal two tier frame in about 1935 by John Taylor & Co. Maintenance ha* been neglected since which ha* resulted In the frame becoming extremely rusty wtth no paint visible anywhere. An Inspection at Stowtangtoft, where the existing four bells hang In a six bell frame dating from 1866 , revealed the need for some maintenance work but In the longer term these bells will need to be completely overhauled. The ring of six at Hlntlesham were last overhauled 84 years ago and their present state can only be described as fair wtth the main cause for concern being the split elm headstock on the second bell. To keep these bells rtngable will require a greater attention to routine maintenance. In the longer term the bells will need to be completely overhauled. A! Barrow the five bell* remain In quite good order. Apart from the ball bearings the fittings date from 1900 and the second bell’s elm headstock Is seriously weakened by extensive woodworm attack The four bells at Ampton require urgent maintenance work before they can be rung again In full circle. The frame and fittings date from 1888 and were installed by Q.Bullock of Ixworth. The headstocks are In a poor state, the treble having a bad spilt on the north side, the third and tenor's are badly wormeaten and spilt, whilst the second bell I* very loose in the headstock. A trial ring of the bells at Monks Elelgh has been carried out with the church architect taking simultaneous measurements of the tower and crack movements. Unfortunately, whilst the bells were quite easy to ring and In relatively good going order, there were significant movements across some of the cracks near the base of the tower which will restrict any further progress In getting these bells ringing again in the near future. At Wltnesham It Is hoped that the six bells will be able to be rung for special occasions in the near future when some restoration work has been completed. The tenor headstock at Rougham has split preventing further use of this bell until the headstock Is replaced. The headstock for the fifth is also showing similar signs of distress and It Is planned to replace this headstock at the same time as the tenor’s. With regard to the Directory of Towers there has been a major review of the Information to reflect 10 the currant estimated tenor weight* and note* bated on measurement* taken during Inspection* over recent yean. This has resulted In tome case* to significant changes but I consider that the Information contained I* now a more accurate record. This mean* that there are now major differences with other published data such as that contained In the seventh edition of Dove. U.D.Whltear

Although attendance at the quarterly meetings has averaged thirty during 1989, there has been a number of new members elected. Seven Junior and twelve ringing member*. As well a* ringing continuing at the more established towers in the district It has been encouraging to note a new band has been formed at Stradbroke by Robin Allum, and that eight of the new member* elected are members of the Stradbroke team. Unfortunately, the district striking competition was cancelled due to lack of support, this situation hope fully will be rectified in 1990, as a more central venue has been chosen at Blythburgh. District practice* have been held between the quarterly meetings, and have attracted welcome visitors from other districts, some have been very well attended whilst others, although short on numbers have benefited those who attended. The new officers elected during 1989 are looking forward to 1990 and hope to continue to encourage all ringers In the district Ruth Bedford Tower Correspondents: Aldeburgh:Mlss R Bedford, 49 Franklin Rd, Aldeburgh (453330) BedfleldrCanon W Donnan, The Rectory, Wortlngworth (244) 23

The South East has enjoyed another varied and successful year with progress made across the district Our district practices and meetings held on the first Saturday of each month have been well attended and it’s been particularly pleasing to see several new faces joining the band of 'regulars' - we hope to welcome more of you in 1990. The district striking competition held at Earl Soham In May was one of the high spots of the year with a record seventeen teams taking part A minor miracle of timing and planning by the ringing- master resulted In everybody ringing their set piece In time for the church service, with St Mary- le-Tower beating Grundisburgh ‘A’ Into second place and taking the trophy once again. If any extra teams enter this year we may have to make it an all day event'! In March a merry band of South Eastern members travelled westwards to Cambridgeshire, picking up one or two South-Western oddments on the way, for our annual district outing. The sun shone down on us and it was impossible for anybody not to enjoy the day with its 27

assorted bells and lovely villages. This year’s outing Is to Hertfordshire and we look forward to another day of ringing. The launch of the ‘Friend’s of Suffolk Bells' In July saw the bells rung at every rtngable tower In the SouthEast with roving bands of Itinerant ringers reaching the parts other bands couldn’t reach. If you havnl had the pleasure of ringing at St Stephen’s In Ipswich then I can thoroughly recommend It for your next outing: Otley and Sproughton bells were televised with a high standard of ringing at both. The district maintenance team of David Lugg, lain Mitchell and others have put In a lot of hard work over the year. Both Wttnesham and Framsden have been made rtngable again after many years of silence and we look forward to the rehanglng of Framllngham and Monewden bells and the augmentation to twelve of Grundlsburgh. Two new faces have joined us on the district committee for 1990. We welcome Yvonne Cole who replaces Shirley Girt as Ipswich deanery rep. and Philippa Rixon who bravely volunteered to take over as newsletter correspondent for Dennis Bugg. A thought to leave you with:- for the future of the district we must continue to put our time and efforts Into recruitment and retention of new ringers. I believe there Is no single, magic factor that enables us to do this but that It rests with each and every one of us to help In small ways by the welcome and encouragement we give in our home towers. My thanks to all of you who have supported the district In 1989. Gill Waterson (S.E.Secretary.) Special methods were chosen for the meetings and all were rung. Eight teams entered the District striking competition which was won by Stowmarket The District outing went to Bedfordshire and the Joint outing to Leicestershire. A treasure hunt and bar-b-que were also enjoyed. The N.W had an open towers day as pari of the launch of Friends of Suffolk Bells'. This attracted several ringers from other parts of the country. In December the District had a Christmas dinner at Beyton White Horse. Fourteen new members were elected during the year. We look forward to seeing them at future meetings ! Sadly Stella Foan at Horrfnger died during the year, her determination was an example to all. On a happier note the bells In the district were rung to celebrate personal milestones: Winston & Sue Girting their Sliver Wedding; Winifred and Henry Mngs, Beatrice and Harry Fuller their respective Golden Weddings and Charlie Stannard his 80th birthday. All have given valued service to the life of the district for many years. 32 Tower Correspondents: Ampton:Canon R.Norbum, Ingham Rectory, Bury SLEds.(Culford 430) BactorcDr.P.Franks, Taylor* Green, Bacton.(Metidle*ham 78777) Badweil AstvA-D.Flsk, Blenheim, Thuraton Rd.,GtBarton, Bury StEdmund*(Tel: Pakenham 31382) BarrowC.R.Nurm, 37 Bury Road, Barrow, Bury StEdmund*.(810317) BrandontE.Curson, 1 Nuntgale, Thetford.(3300) Bury SLEdmunds(Norman Tower):P.Stannard, 9 Bury Road, Barrow, Bury stEdmund*.(810866) BuxhaltCanon C.Kendail, Buxhall Rectory, Buxhall, Stowmarket(RatHe*den 236) ChevingtorcD.Tayler, Chapel Cottage, The Green, Hargrave (Bury 850537) Cotton:Mr* E.HolUngsworth, 27 Northgate St, Bury SLEdmund*. Having been Invited to write a report of the major actlvttle* In the S.W.DIstrtct during 1989. I have been Tacking' my brain to find something to say. The one social event of our year was the District Striking Competition held at Pretton St Mary at the beginning of July. This followed the same pattern a* the 1988 competition being held In the evening In conjunction with a bar-b-gue provided by member* of the local band which wa* very well patronised. Only three business meetings were held during the year Instead of the customary four. Each of these meeting* attracted a reasonable attendance by district members and the experiment Is being repeated In 1990. Although there is a low level of activity Guildwlse In our District we have maintained a good record at local level. There are 23 active local tower bands who ring regularly every Sunday and the remaining seven tower* are manned on special occasion* by local arrangement. Sadly there I* still no resident band at StGregory's Sudbury, so these bell* continue to be rung entirely by rtnge r* from the surrounding dlsrttct 36

Regular practice* are being maintained at St Peter1* Sudbury on the *econd and fourth Wednesdays of each month under the captaincy of Alan Mayle: visitors are alwayt welcome. It I* pleating to be able to report an Increase level of adMty In the Lavenham deanary where there are currently strong local band* ringing at RatUe*sden (where a considerable amount of maintenance work ha* been carried out by local ringer* to Improve the ‘go’ of the bell*), Drlnkttone and Woolplt and several of these good folk have been have been elected to District Office for 1990. Several other new name* appear In the list of District Officer* for the 1990 and hopefully our District will have reaped the benefit* of an Influx of fresh Idea* by thl* time next year. Lastly on a personal note, I have decided to take a rest from the awesome responsibilities of Guild Office and would like to pinch a few line* of my allotted space to express my grateful thank* to all the good people who have befriended me during my excursions around the diocese on behalf of our Gul!d(whll*t wearing a variety of official hats) and to wish every one who undertake* any sort of office the very best of luck (especially the District Secretary!!) Restoration Fund - Income v Grants Approved

The attached chart details the original sources and the annual commitments to Grant-Aid over the last four years.

As can he seen, whilst the inflow of funds, overall, has been rising we have 'approved' grants at a much faster rate (1933 excepted) - The dangers of allowing this trend to continue are all too obvious! We need to address the problem , now!

For 1990 your Management Committee have already endorsed recommendations for new initiatives in supporting a drive -for; (i) Mew members - Membership numbers in 1939 were slightly down on the previous year. A target of 10jb increase for each of the four D istricts should be achievable. ( ii) Covenanted Subscriptions - The scheme is now up-and-running but needs (and deserves) more1 followers1. (See separate report form the Covenant Secretary) - Please contact Andrew Fisk today on 0359/Pakenham - 31382 - or at th e AGM . ( i i i ) Friends of Suffolk Bells - Contributions from the "Friends" is rising most generously - but more 'friends' are needed. Surely it ought to be possible for most (if not all) adult ringing members of the Guild to encourage and enlist the support of one new 'Friend' for 1990 ? For 1991 - I believe we need also to increase, substantially, our hitherto modest contribution from the Guilds General Funds - even though this w ill mean putting up subs! Just look again at the Chart - In 1986 the General Fund Subsidy for Restoration Projects was nearly 40% of Restoration Fund Income. Last year-( 19 89 )-it had actually dropped to about 23% and yet, on the other ham}.,total Grants'requested and Approved'had risen from £2680 to £9540. The figures speak for themselves-but if any member is still unconvinced let them consider; (a ) The enormous p o te n tia l v:e a l l know e x is ts in t h i s D iocese fo r extremely worthwhile Restoration projects. (b) The number of new projects we know are already in the pipe-line or are under consideration. (c) The fact that, in the.first two months only of 1990, your Management Committee have received and approved requests for Grants totalling £4,225. (Which we don't yet have!) (d) What immense privileges and opportunities membership of the Suffolk Guild provides. How does each one of us value our many f rie n d s h ip s w ith in th e G uild ? Please consider all these facets, facts and figures —most carefully - then be sure to come along to the AGM and let your view on this important subject be h eard.
