Du 17 au 28 juillet Pour les jeunes de 4 ans et plus PRESENTATION GENERALE A la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale, New York devient le laboratoire de l’avant-garde, position qu’elle affichera pendant des décennies. Malgré la mondialisation croissante et la décentralisation des lieux de création artistique, New York a continué à cristalliser les recherches artistiques les plus significatives du XXème siècle. Déclinée en 500 œuvres de plus de 200 artistes, cette exposition sera la première en Europe à explorer ce thème, élargie à une recherche critique des secteurs de l'architecture, du cinéma, de la photo, de la performance et de la vidéo. Au travers de l'identification ponctuelle des mouvements artistiques qui se sont succédés au cours de ces décennies - l’Expressionnisme Abstrait, le Pop Art, le Minimalisme, l’Art Conceptuel et le Post-modernisme - on pourra vérifier le rôle dominant qu'ont exercé les artistes américains dans le monde de l'art par leurs créations ; ces artistes ont fait de New York un lieu unique pour s'exprimer au mieux et s’affirmer sur la scène artistique internationale. Les commissaires de l'exposition ont sélectionné pour la partie historique 84 artistes et 200 œuvres qui représentent au mieux cette scène dynamique. La section photographie, quant à elle, rassemble 300 clichés de 50 artistes. Cet ambitieux projet s'est appuyé sur la collaboration scientifique d'experts dans les différentes sections : United Architects – architecture Melissa Harris - photographie Roselee Goldberg – performance et vidéo Thierry Jousse - cinéma Les 4000m2 de l'Espace Ravel deviennent alors la scène idéale pour accueillir la force puissante des œuvres sélectionnées. Le projet de scénographie a été confié au Studio Cerri Associati de Milan qui soulignera le rapport entre les différentes formes artistiques. L’exposition sera accompagnée d’un catalogue illustré, réunissant des textes des deux co-commissaires et des quatre experts scientifiques, ainsi que des textes d’historiens et de critiques d’art spécialisés dans les différentes sections abordées. PANORAMA HISTORIQUE DES MOUVEMENTS ARTISTIQUES NEW YORKAIS DE LA 2NDE MOITIE DU XXEME SIECLE L’EXPRESSIONNISME ABSTRAIT ET L’ECOLE DE NEW YORK Ces artistes ont donné le coup d’envoi à un nouveau cours dans l’art américain. Influencés par les surréalistes émigrés qui commencèrent à arriver sur les côtes à partir des années quarante, l’expressionisme abstrait est devenue la première importante école américaine à avoir déclaré son indépendance des styles européens. Ce mouvement se caractérise à la fois comme un geste par lequel la toile devient une arène où s’expriment les déversements inconscients et une chromatique traitée par les artistes en à plat de grands rectangles de couleur qui traduisent leur préférence pour le spirituel et le transcendantal. Parmi les « rejetons » de l’Expressionnisme abstrait nous pouvons mentionner la Peinture « Color Field » (champ de couleur), où la couleur est maculée sur une toile vierge ce qui donne lieu à l’idéal d’une peinture sur une surface vraiment plane et à l’élimination de tout contenu émotif, mythique ou religieux du mouvement précédent. Une variante de « Color-Field » connue sur le nom de « Hardedge painting » déclinait des abstractions géométriques ainsi que des arrangements non-relationnels de formes sur toute la toile. PHOTOGRAPHIE Parallèlement au développement d’une école newyorkaise de peinture, se constituait un groupe de photographes généralement appelés « l’école de photographie de New York ». Formés aux méthodes du journalisme documentaire, ces artistes développèrent ce qui allait être connu sous le nom de « l’esthétique de l’instantané » (snapshot aesthetic). Ils descendirent dans les rues à la recherche d’une Amérique authentique; leurs travaux exprimaient l’aliénation et l’isolement social de l’expérience urbaine contemporaine. NEO-DADA, ASSEMBLAGE, ENVIRONNEMENTS, HAPPENINGS, FLUXUS Le terme Néo-Dada s’est vu appliqué à une grande variété de travaux artistiques; on s’en est servi pour désigner les combinaisons et les assemblages pré-pop de Rauschenberg et de Jasper Johns, les Happenings, les Assemblages, Fluxus, le Pop Art ainsi que toute autre forme d’expérimentation artistique. L’élément unifiant du Néo-Dada est sa ré- investigation de l’ironie Dada ainsi que l’emploi d’objets trouvés et d’activités banales comme des instruments de critique sociale et esthétique. Généralement les Happenings étaient des pièces théâtrales structurées ayant eu lieu entre la moitié des années cinquante et la moitié des années soixante. Pendant ces années-là, les artistes étaient à la recherche d’un moyen pour établir une relation plus directe entre l’art et la vie, l’artiste et le public. L’action des Happenings ne se déroulait pas dans le lieu clos de la galerie mais dans des espaces publics. Parmi les traits caractéristiques des Happenings on compte l’improvisation, l’intégration d’autres expressions, comme l’art visuel, la chorégraphie et la poésie. Fluxus est à la fois un style et une attitude. C’est un mouvement subversif qui défie toute forme de compréhension institutionnelle de l’art en mettant en avant les qualités telles que la décontraction, le naturel et la spontanéité. Fluxus expérimente les relations/connexions entre les arts visuels, la poésie, la musique, la danse, le théâtre ainsi que d’autres formes de performance plus radicales comme les « actions ». POP ART Les artistes du Pop Art ont exploré le monde de la culture populaire et ont embrassé son matérialisme. En partant des expériences de Jasper Johns, de Rauschenberg et des efforts de l’Assemblage pour ramener l’art et la vie dans une intime proximité, les artistes Pop s’inspirèrent de la publicité, des affiches, des films, des bandes dessinées et des devantures de magasins. Ces images, présentées avec humour et ironie, peuvent également être vues à la fois comme une célébration et une critique de la culture populaire. PEINTURE FIGURATIVE ET PHOTOREALISME Le Photoréalisme a accentué le rendu précis du sujet avec des images qui proviennent souvent de photographies existantes. Le style a mis en avant la compétence technique, révélant l’image photographique (le plus souvent des scènes de rue ou des portraits). MINIMALISME ET POST-MINIMALISME, LAND ART Le minimalisme se réfère aux peintures ou aux sculptures faites avec une économie de moyens et réduites à l’essentiel de l’abstraction géométrique. Le minimalisme embrasse aussi bien le refus de la subjectivité artistique du pop art que le geste héroïque de l’expressionnisme abstrait, voire, il partage même avec ces deux mouvements certaines qualités formelles et certaines méthodes comme l’utilisation de la répétition, une esthétique machinale, une présentation impassible et froide. Dans l’art minimaliste l’approche phénoménologique et l’expérience du spectateur revêtent une grande importance. Dans le post-minimalisme, certains artistes ont réagi au minimalisme et à son insistance à présenter des formes géométriques fermées.

    Jean­Michel Basquiat: An Analysis of Nine Paintings By Michael Dragovic This paper was written for History 397: History, Memory, Representation. The course was taught by Professor Akiko Takenaka in Winter 2009. Jean‐Michel Basquiat’s incendiary career and rise to fame during the 1980s was unprecedented in the world of art. Even more exceptional, he is the only black painter to have achieved such mystic celebrity status. The former graffiti sprayer whose art is inextricable from the backdrop of New York City streets penetrated the global art scene with unparalleled quickness. His work arrested the attention of big‐ shot art dealers such as Bruno Bischofberger, Mary Boone, and Anina Nosei, while captivating a vast audience ranging from vagabonds to high society. His paintings are often compared to primitive tribal drawings and to kindergarten scribbles, but these comparisons are meant to underscore the works’ raw innocence and tone of authenticity akin to the primitivism of Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Cy Twombly or, perhaps, even that of the infant mind. Be that as it may, there is nothing juvenile about the communicative power of Basquiat’s work. His paintings depict the physical and the abstract to express themes as varied as drug abuse, bigotry, jazz, capitalism, and mortality. What seem to be the most pervasive throughout his paintings are themes of racial and socioeconomic inequality and the degradation of life that accompanies this. After examining several key paintings from Basquiat’s brief but illustrious career, the emphasis on specific visual and textual imagery within and among these paintings coalesces as a marked—and often scathing— social commentary.

    BOOM FOR REAL: THE SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT PRESENTS THE ART OF JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT IN GERMANY BASQUIAT BOOM FOR REAL FEBRUARY 16 – MAY 27, 2018 Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) is acknowledged today as one of the most significant artists of the 20th century. More than 30 years after his last solo exhibition in a public collection in Germany, the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt is presenting a major survey devoted to this American artist. Featuring more than 100 works, the exhibition is the first to focus on Basquiat’s relationship to music, text, film and television, placing his work within a broader cultural context. In the 1970s and 1980s, Basquiat teamed up with Al Diaz in New York to write graffiti statements across the city under the pseudonym SAMO©. Soon he was collaging baseball cards and postcards and painting on clothing, doors, furniture and on improvised canvases. Basquiat collaborated with many artists of his time, most famously Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. He starred in the film New York Beat with Blondie’s singer Debbie Harry and performed with his experimental band Gray. Basquiat created murals and installations for New York nightclubs like Area and Palladium and in 1983 he produced the hip-hop record Beat Bop with K-Rob and Rammellzee. Having come of age in the Post-Punk underground scene in Lower Manhattan, Basquiat conquered the art world and gained widespread international recognition, becoming the youngest participant in the history of the documenta in 1982. His paintings were hung beside works by Joseph Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter and Cy Twombly.

STATEMENT OF HISTORIC CONTEXTS INTRODUCTION This National Historic Landmark Theme Study, entitled “Modernism in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Design and Art in Bartholomew County, Indiana from 1942,” is a revision of an earlier study, “Modernism in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Design and Art in Bartholomew County, Indiana, 1942-1999.” The initial documentation was completed in 1999 and endorsed by the Landmarks Committee at its April 2000 meeting. It led to the designation of six Bartholomew County buildings as National Historic Landmarks in 2000 and 2001 First Christian Church (Eliel Saarinen, 1942; NHL, 2001), the Irwin Union Bank and Trust (Eero Saarinen, 1954; NHL, 2000), the Miller House (Eero Saarinen, 1955; NHL, 2000), the Mabel McDowell School (John Carl Warnecke, 1960; NHL, 2001), North Christian Church (Eero Saarinen, 1964; NHL, 2000) and First Baptist Church (Harry Weese, 1965; NHL, 2000). No fewer than ninety-five other built works of architecture or landscape architecture by major American architects in Columbus and greater Bartholomew County were included in the study, plus many renovations and an extensive number of unbuilt projects. In 2007, a request to lengthen the period of significance for the theme study as it specifically relates to the registration requirements for properties, from 1965 to 1973, was accepted by the NHL program and the original study was revised to define a more natural cut-off date with regard to both Modern design trends and the pace of Bartholomew County’s cycles of new construction.

TAYLOR MEAD MEMORIAL SCREENING Who didn’t love Taylor Mead? Irrepressible and irreverent, made of silly putty yet always sharp- witted, he was an underground icon in the Lower East Side and around the world. While THE FLOWER THIEF put him on the map, and Andy Warhol lifted him to Superstardom, Taylor truly made his mark in the incredibly vast array of films and videos he made with notables and nobodies alike. A poster child of the beat era, Mead was a scene-stealer who was equally vibrant on screen, on stage, or in a café reading his hilarious, aphoristic poetry.
