Measure 8 (2013) Annex Management Plan for Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA) No.138 Linnaeus Terrace, Asgard Range, Victoria Land Introduction Linnaeus Terrace is an elevated bench of weathered Beacon Sandstone located at the western end of the Asgard Range, 1.5km north of Oliver Peak, at 161° 05.0' E 77° 35.8' S,. The terrace is ~ 1.5 km in length by ~1 km in width at an elevation of about 1600m. Linnaeus Terrace is one of the richest known localities for the cryptoendolithic communities that colonize the Beacon Sandstone. The sandstones also exhibit rare physical and biological weathering structures, as well as trace fossils. The excellent examples of cryptoendolithic communities are of outstanding scientific value, and are the subject of some of the most detailed Antarctic cryptoendolithic descriptions. The site is vulnerable to disturbance by trampling and sampling, and is sensitive to the importation of non-native plant, animal or microbial species and requires long-term special protection. Linnaeus Terrace was originally designated as Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) No. 19 through Recommendation XIII-8 (1985) after a proposal by the United States of America. The SSSI expiry date was extended by Resolution 7 (1995), and the Management Plan was adopted in Annex V format through Measure 1 (1996). The site was renamed and renumbered as ASPA No 138 by Decision 1 (2002). The Management Plan was updated through Measure 10 (2008) to include additional provisions to reduce the risk of non-native species introductions into the Area. The Area is situated in Environment S – McMurdo – South Victoria Land Geologic based on the Environmental Domains Analysis for Antarctica and in Region 9 – South Victoria Land based on the Antarctic Conservation Biogeographic Regions. -

Georgi Bonchev Str., Bl. 26, 1113 Sofia, Bulgaria * corresponding author <[email protected]> This article is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Victoria Gesheva gratefully Abstract: In this study, selected heavy metals resistant heterotrophic bacteria isolated from soil samples at the Windmill Islands region, Wilkes Land (East Antarctica), were character− ized. Phylogenetic analysis revealed affiliation of isolates to genera Bacillus, Lysini− bacillus, Micrococcus and Stenotrophomonas. The strains were found to be psychrotolerant and halotolerant, able to tolerate up to 10% NaCl in the growth medium. The Minimum In− hibitory Concentration of the seven heavy metals Cr, Cu, Ni, Co, Cd, Zn, and Pb was deter− mined in solid media for each bacterial strain. Gram−positive Vi−2 strain and Gram−negative Vi−4 strain showed highest multiply heavy metals resistance, and Vi−3 and Vi−4 strains showed multi−antibiotic resistance to more than a half of the 13 used antibiotics. Plasmids were detected only in Gram−negative Vi−4 strain. The bacteria were able to produce differ− ent hydrolytic enzymes including industrially important proteases, xylanases, cellulases, and b−glucosidases. High heavy metals resistance of the Antarctic bacteria suggests their potential application for wastewater treatment in cold and temperate climates. Highly sensi− tive to Cd and Co ions Vi−1, Vi−5 and Vi−7 strains would be promising for developing biosensors to detect these most toxic heavy metals in environmental samples. -

PROGRAM INFO Program Information National Science Foundation Introduction The purpose of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) Field Manual is to provide an overview of USAP field logistics, operations, and safety. It contains information relevant to field deployments and living and working in an Antarctic field camp and is intended to en- hance your success in the field. It is your responsibility to be familiar with the skills and techniques covered in this manual. This is intended to be a reference manual and it should be taken into the field with you. Valuable knowledge is provided. Safety, environ- mental stewardship, and your health are of paramount importance. Continued vigilance and action in these areas are essential to main- tain a safe and productive environment for work in Antarctica. The harsh conditions encountered in the field setting, coupled with relatively short deployments and important scientific objectives, re- quire effective leadership and constant risk management from all team members. Reducing the risk of injury and illness depends on a combination of systematic risk assessment, hazard elimination or control, appropriate use of personal protective equipment, and safe work practices. This manual is designed to be used in conjunction with the USAP Field Practices Manual located on www.usap.gov. The Field Prac- tices Manual provides pre-deployment, planning information that is useful during the Support Information Packet (SIP) process. Use of these manuals and adherence to the guidelines set forth will en- hance both your safety and productivity while working in Antarctica. We wish you a very safe and productive field season. Code of Conduct McMurdo Dry Valleys ASMA: Day Trips Located on Ross Island at Hut Point Peninsula is McMurdo Station, which serves as a transportation and logistics hub for the National Science Foundation-managed United States Antarctic Program. Ross Island is also home to New Zealand’s Scott Base and nine Antarctic Specially Protected Areas, each with its own management plan. Approximately 50 miles northwest and across McMurdo Sound are the virtually ice-free McMurdo Dry Valleys, which were discovered in 1903 by British explorer Robert Falcon Scott. The Dry Valley Antarctic Specially Managed Area (or ASMA) was the first ASMA to be officially recognized under the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty. In June, 2004, the Area was formally designated as a Specially Managed Area. Managed Areas are used to assist in the planning and coordination of activities, to avoid conflicts and minimize environmental impacts. Whether this is your first trip to this important Area or you are a frequent visitor, environmental responsibility is your primary priority. Maintaining the ASMA in its natural state must take precedence. The Antarctic Specially Managed Area supports eleven established facilities and many tent camps each season. Established facilities include camps at Lake Hoare, Lake Bonney, Lake Fryxell, New Harbor, F-6, Bull Pass, Marble Point Refueling Station, Lake Vanda, Lower Wright Valley, the radio repeater stations at Mt. Newall and Cape Roberts. The McMurdo Dry Valleys ecosystem contains geological and biological features that are thousands and, in some cases, millions of years old. Microscopic life in the Dry Valleys constitute some of the most fragile and unique ecological communities on Earth. -
