ALEJANDRA GONZALEZ High School: Sumner Academy of Arts & Science MASTER OF CEREMONIES College: Kansas State University- Manhattan, KS " Hello! I am entering my sophomore year at Kansas State University in the College of Business. I recently Camille P. Hamilton, Vice President changed my major to Finance with a minor in Spanish Translations. I have had a great time in Manhattan going to school and still working at Chipotle. This year I have received the K-State Family Pin for volunteering at Turner High School earlier in February. I am super excited to have the opportunity this Welcome summer to travel abroad to Paraguay to participate in community service in Kumba Kua, by teaching English at a local elementary school. My advice for you is to go out and get involved! Look for clubs and opportunities that interest you and talk to anyone. This will make your college experience 10x better by being able to get away from school work for a little bit. Remember to stay on top of your work but at the Sumner Academy c/o 1996 Alumni Fund same time, make time for your interest and social time." DE’AUAN MCCLAINE AWARD PRESENTATIONS High School: Sumner Academy of Arts & Science $500 Awardee College: Dillard University- New Orleans, LA “ I majored in Film and recently landed on the Dean’s List and had a public appearance in a Tank and Elizabeth Zing (Washington High School) Bangas music video. My advice: The sky isn't the limit. Don't let anyone talk you out of your dreams because deep down, you're the only one who truly knows what you want and what's best for you. College is the only time where you are allowed to be an adult without necessarily having adult responsibilities so $300 Awardees take advantage of it.” Caleb Brown (Sumner Academy) KARLA RINCON Malik Jenkins (Sumner Academy) High School: Schlagle High School College: University of Missouri– Kansas City (UMKC)- Kansas City, MO $250 Awardees “I am currently studying architecture. This year has been very enjoyable, and I’ve been able to learn many things. I am currently working on my final project where we have to design an Urban House, and Adriana Suarez (Sumner Academy) it has been very thrilling because I am able to learn new things everyday. I am so grateful that I got the opportunity to study this career. I look forward to the years coming, and also the new things I will be Cheyenne Mielkus (Sumner Academy) seeing and experiencing. This incredible journey wouldn't have been able to happen without the support from my family, God, and this amazing scholarship fund. Sumner Academy Class of 1996 Alumni Fund $200 Awardees has helped me so much throughout this past year, I am very grateful towards them and grateful for the things they have done for me.” Clarissa Rincon (Sumner Academy) JACE SMITH Dajah Smith (Sumner Academy) High School: Sumner Academy Destiny Haynes (Schlagle High School)- Pat G. Hamilton Awardee College: Kansas State University- Manhattan, KS Eric Terrazas (Sumner Academy) “It's also not easy to give general advice that isn't nuanced. It's easy to discuss advice in terms of mistakes I've made (i.e. make sure to file online paperwork to receive the aid associated with the FAFSA as soon as possible), but I Georgia Brantley (Sumner Academy) suppose that if I were to make a general piece of advice, it'd be this: There are going to be challenges, especially academic; embrace them as best you can, or at least don't let them get you down. Nearly anyone can be successful in Jesus Granados (Harmon High School) nearly any field if they work hard enough, so pick one that provides you with challenges that you enjoy facing, with satisfying resolutions -- for me so far, that's been math and physics as they're applied to circuitry, and logic as it's applied to code. Wish this year's recipients the best of luck in their endeavors! The scholarship fund is a really great thing, I hope it continues to touch individuals' lives as it did mine for years to come.” KEYNOTE SUAN SONNA Anjail Weaver-Belton, United States Navy (Ret.)/Pastry Chef High School: Sumner Academy College: Kansas State University– Manhattan, KS Sumner Academy c/o 1996 Alumni “I am currently a philosophy major and political science minor at Kansas State University. One of my papers on natural law theory and tolerance was accepted for presentation at Webster University's 14 Annual Undergraduate Conference; a short story of mine was published in K-State's literary journal; and, I have had the opportunity to talk on the radio and different podcasts about philosophy and politics. My advice is simple - be prepared for change and the responsibilities of adulthood. Make sure Closing Remarks you keep track of your emails, continue to apply for scholarships, and use your freedom for good.” ELIZABETH ZING Anjail Weaver-Belton enlisted into SCHOOL: WASHINGTON College: University of Kansas 2019 Awardees Degree: Biology; Pre-Med U.S. Navy aer graduang from Career: Medical Profession Sumner Academy.
