  • Qatar Introduction
Geographic overview Qatar is a peninsula in the east of Arabia, bordering the Persian Gulf and Saudi Arabia, in a strategic location near major petroleum deposits. Qatar occupies 11,437 km2 (4,416 sq mi) on a peninsula that extends approximately to 160 km north into the Persian Gulf from the Arabian Peninsula. Doha's West Bay skyline in the morning seen from the Corniche Promenade. Qatar's capital is located on Doha Bay in central east of the peninsula 1 Population and GDP growth overview ► Qatar’s historical and forecast population growth rates are illustrated in the chart below. ► According to Economic Intelligence Unit, Country Report – June 2014, real GDP growth has moderated now that the latest round of investment in gas export capacity has been completed. Qatar's economic growth rose from 2010 to 11, averaging 15.0% a year mainly due to increasing global hydrocarbon prices and the near-doubling of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) output. Growth weakened in 2012 and 2013 to 6.2% and 6.0%, respectively, with a mere expansion of 1.7% and 0.1% in the oil sector in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Real GDP growth is expected to an average of 6.1% from 2015 to 2018 to offset the adverse impact of lower oil and gas prices, owing to an increase in capital expenditures,. Although the economy is still dependent on hydrocarbons revenue, growth has been driven primarily by the non-hydrocarbons sectors. ► Currently, Qatar is the world's largest LNG exporter and has the third largest gas reserves in the world.

Article West Bay Business District in Doha, State of Qatar: Envisioning a Vibrant Transit-Oriented Development Deema Alattar 1, Raffaello Furlan 1,* , Michael Grosvald 2 and Rashid Al-Matwi 1 1 Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, Qatar University, Doha 3263, Qatar; [email protected] (D.A.); [email protected] (R.A.-M.) 2 Department of English Literature and Linguistics, Qatar University, Doha 2713, Qatar; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: In recent decades, Doha, the capital of Qatar, has experienced a large-scale transformation due to globalization and rapid economic growth. Recently, these changes have led to a focus on infrastructural development and the launch of the city’s metro project, whose success will depend heavily on Transit-Oriented Development (TOD). TOD focuses on the “3Ds” principles—design, density, and diversity—aiming to create walkable neighborhoods and well-integrated public trans- portation, with diverse mixed land uses and high-density, sustainable growth. In combining the concepts of livability, sustainable urbanism, and urban sociology, TOD leads to the creation of vibrant and active neighborhoods. The present research project focuses on TOD around Doha’s West Bay metro station, using the city’s central business district as a case study. The aim of this research project is to investigate the existing site conditions of the West Bay area, evaluate them with respect to TOD principles, and then propose a master plan for improved development. The final product of the research project is a proposal with design guidelines that are aimed at increasing the ridership of the Citation: Alattar, D.; Furlan, R.; West Bay metro station and creating a more attractive and dynamic neighborhood.

  • Accessibility of Public Urban Green Spaces Within the Spatial Metropolitan Network of Doha, State of Qatar
Tannous, H.O.; Major, M.D., Furlan, R. Accessibility of Public Urban Green Spaces within the Spatial Metropolitan Network of Doha, State of Qatar. Research Paper Accessibility of Public Urban Green Spaces within the Spatial Metropolitan Network of Doha, State of Qatar Heba O. TANNOUS, Research Associate, Qatar Mark David MAJOR, Assistant Professor of Architecture and Urban Design, Qatar Raffaello FURLAN, Assistant Professor of Architecture and Urban Design, Qatar Abstract Most people regard green spaces as a necessity to enhance the physical health and psychological well-being of residents in promoting the general health and welfare of citizens and the environment (Röbbel, 2016). In the Modern Era, the availability of green spaces has become an integral component of urban planning for sustaining the quality of life in city environments, especially since the dawn of the 20th century. Due to globalization in rapidly-developing cities around the world, studies about green spaces are becoming an increasingly important part of the urban planning process (Mitchell and Popham, 2007). Accessibility can play an essential role in determining the location of green public facilities to maximize their usability for large populations, or otherwise limit use to a smaller community (Ottensmann and Greg, 2008). However, some public green spaces are inefficiently located or distributed in urban environments (Beatley, 2000, Gehl, 2010, Gehl and Svarre, 2013). In this paper, the accessibility of urban green spaces means the ease of reaching such locations from many origins within the urban spatial network from the macro- to the micro-scale. The inaccessibility or absence of green spaces in some urban areas is a notable consequence of rapid urbanization in many cities around the world.
