Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street- Walk of Fame Additional Name in Terrazzo Sidewalk­ CHARLES DURNING

RECOMMENDATIONS:

A. That the City Council designate Location No. 5e as shown on Sheet 14 of Plan D-13788 for the Hollywood Walk of Fame for the installation of the name of Charles Durning at 6504 Hollywood Boulevard.

B. Inform the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce of the Council's action on this matter.

C. That this report be adopted prior to the date of the ceremony on July 31, 2008.

FISCAL IMPACT STATEMENT:

No General Fund Impact. All cost paid by permittee.

DISCUSSION:

The Walk of Fame Committee of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has submitted a request for insertion into the Hollywood Walk of Fame the name of Charles Durning. The ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, July 31, 2008 at 11:30 a.m.

The communicant's request is in accordance with City Council action of October 18, 1978, under Council File No. 78-3949. Following the Council's action of approval, and upon proper application and payment of the required fee, an installation permit can be secured at 201 N. Figueroa Street, 3rd Floor, Counter 23".

CHARLES DURNING (Category -MOTION PICTURES)- Requested star location to be 6504 Hollywood Blvd. south side of the street The star for CHARLES DURNING will be situated next to the stars of DON ALVARADO (5E), to the west and JAMES CAGMEU which is numbered (4E) to the east. According to sheet# 14 plan 13788, CHARLES QURNING'S star is numbered 5e. The dedication ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, July 31, 2008 at 11:30 a.m.

The following celebrities were selected to be honored with Walk of Fame stars during the annual Walk of Fame selection meeting on June 13, 2004. The names presented by Chairman Earl Lestz are as follows:

Motion was made by Diehl and seconded by Goldman to accept the recommendations of the Walk of Fame Selection Committee for the 2009 Walk of Fame recipients. Motion Passed. ·

Nicole Shahenian Vice President of Public Policy All his life, Charles Durning has beaten the odds. As a World War II hero, he has been honored by being the recipient of 3 Purples Hearts and one for his bravery. He 11 was the only member of his unit to survive the "D-Day" siege on June 6t , 1944. He was taken prisoner a few months later at the Battle of the Bulge, the war's bloodiest battle, and survived a mass execution of prisoners. Even though his legs had been strafed by machine gun fire, he went on to become a professional dancer and received his first Academy A ward nomination for the film "Best Little Whorehouse in " where he sang and danced his way through the movie.

Not only did Charles Durning become a good actor as well, he became one of the most critically lauded, steadily working character actors of our generation, appearing in over 200 films and television shows! And this year. .. he was honored with the prestigious SAG Life Achievement Award.

One of the most versatile actors of our time, Durning has received two Academy Award nominations for his comedic turns in "To Be or Not To Be" and "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas". He won a Tony Award for his interpretation ofBigDaddy in the 1990 Broadway revival hit of"' and also won a Golden Globe Award for 'The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys". Charles Durning has been nominated for 13 . ·

Charity: And as a World War II hero, he has never forgotten his fellow veterans. Every year for the past 15 years, Charles Durning goes to Washington DC to dedicate his time to perform in a Concert dedicated to all the veterans, past, present, and future.
