On leaving the planetarium, turn around and look northwards over the roof of the building. Close to the horizon is a group of stars like the outline of a saucepan with the handle stretching to your left. This is the Plough (also called the Big Dipper) and is part of the constellation Ursa Major, the Great Bear. The two right-hand stars are called the Pointers. Can you tell that the higher of the two, Dubhe is slightly yellowish compared to the lower, Merak? Check with binoculars. Not all stars are white. The colour shows that Dubhe is cooler than Merak in the same way that red-hot is cooler than white- hot. 2. Use the Pointers to guide you upwards to the next bright star. This is Polaris, the Pole (or North) Star. Note that it is not the brightest star in the sky, a common misconception. Below and to the left are two prominent but fainter stars. These are Kochab and Pherkad, the Guardians of the Pole. Look carefully and you will notice that Kochab is slightly orange when compared to Polaris. -

They are also fundamental to stellar evolution studies. The second Gaia data release contains precise astrometry at the sub-milliarcsecond level and homogeneous pho- tometry at the mmag level, that can be used to characterise a large number of clusters over the entire sky. Aims. In this study we aim to establish a list of members and derive mean parameters, in particular distances, for as many clusters as possible, making use of Gaia data alone. Methods. We compile a list of thousands of known or putative clusters from the literature. We then apply an unsupervised membership assignment code, UPMASK, to the Gaia DR2 data contained within the fields of those clusters. -
A Basic Requirement for Studying the Heavens Is Determining Where In
Abasic requirement for studying the heavens is determining where in the sky things are. To specify sky positions, astronomers have developed several coordinate systems. Each uses a coordinate grid projected on to the celestial sphere, in analogy to the geographic coordinate system used on the surface of the Earth. The coordinate systems differ only in their choice of the fundamental plane, which divides the sky into two equal hemispheres along a great circle (the fundamental plane of the geographic system is the Earth's equator) . Each coordinate system is named for its choice of fundamental plane. The equatorial coordinate system is probably the most widely used celestial coordinate system. It is also the one most closely related to the geographic coordinate system, because they use the same fun damental plane and the same poles. The projection of the Earth's equator onto the celestial sphere is called the celestial equator. Similarly, projecting the geographic poles on to the celest ial sphere defines the north and south celestial poles. However, there is an important difference between the equatorial and geographic coordinate systems: the geographic system is fixed to the Earth; it rotates as the Earth does . The equatorial system is fixed to the stars, so it appears to rotate across the sky with the stars, but of course it's really the Earth rotating under the fixed sky. The latitudinal (latitude-like) angle of the equatorial system is called declination (Dec for short) . It measures the angle of an object above or below the celestial equator. The longitud inal angle is called the right ascension (RA for short). -

Last evening (7/29) I participated in a teleconference sponsored by The Night Sky Network. The teleconference presenter was Dr. Thomas Guatier, Kepler Deputy Science Director. Dr Guatier shared a wealth of information re- PSO GALLERY 3 garding the Kepler Space Telescope’s mission, its scientific results and the condition of the telescope after the recent TCAA ANNUAL 4 failure of the second of its four reaction wheels. PICNIC—ALL THE Kepler is now in what they call Point Rest State. In this mode thrusters must be utilized to maintain attitude. The DETAILS! good news is that this mode is very fuel efficient and as such there is enough fuel for two or three years. This means the Kepler team has time to consider options since Kepler cannot point with precision with less than three reaction MEO UPDATE 4 wheels. SIXTH 2013 POS 4 As a planet hunter seeking smaller planets around stars in a patch of sky inside the Summer Triangle, Kepler is AUGUST 10TH unequaled in performance. Kepler maintains a constant vigil, continuously monitoring the light output of about SPACE CAMP 5 150,000 stars for any change in brightness that might indicate a planetary transit. Even if the reaction wheel issue is not resolved there is still an enormous amount of information to be gleaned EDUCATION/PUBLIC 5 from the data acquired by Kepler. -

What more can I say. If you have not made plans for a road trip, you can help out at HRPO. All who are going on a road trip be prepared to share pictures and experiences at the September meeting. BRAS has lost another member, Bart Bennett, who joined BRAS after Chris Desselles gave a talk on Astrophotography to the Cajun Clickers Computer Club (CCCC) in January of 2016, Bart became the President of CCCC at the same time I became president of BRAS. The Clickers are shocked at his sudden death via heart attack. Both organizations will miss Bart. His obituary is posted online here: http://www.rabenhorst.com/obituary/sidney-barton-bart-bennett/ Last month’s meeting, at LIGO, was a success, even though there was not much solar viewing for the public due to clouds and rain for most of the afternoon. BRAS had a table inside the museum building, where Ben and Craig used material from the Night Sky Network for the public outreach. -

The Meaning Of Life This observing list tells a story of birth, life and death within the Universe. Each entry has the essential facts about the object in tabular form and then a paragraph or two explaining why the object is important astrophysi- cally and where is sits on the timeline of the Universe . To get the most out of the list, be sure to read the textual descriptions and physical characteristics as you observe each object. In order to get your “Meaning of Life” observing pin, observe 20 of the 24 objects during the 2007 Eldorado Star Party. The objects are not necessarily listed in the best observing order but a summary sheet at the end lists them in order of setting time. Turn your completed sheet into Bill Tschumy sometime during the event to claim your pin. At the tender age of 1 million years, the cluster is still embedded in the irregularly shaped nebulosity from which it arose. Although the cluster appears to have around 35 stars, most are not true cluster members. -
SAA 100 Club
S.A.A. 100 Observing Club Raleigh Astronomy Club Version 1.2 07-AUG-2005 Introduction Welcome to the S.A.A. 100 Observing Club! This list started on the USENET newsgroup sci.astro.amateur when someone asked about everyone’s favorite, non-Messier objects for medium sized telescopes (8-12”). The members of the group nominated objects and voted for their favorites. The top 100 objects, by number of votes, were collected and ranked into a list that was published. This list is a good next step for someone who has observed all the objects on the Messier list. Since it includes objects in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres (DEC +72 to -72), the award has two different levels to accommodate those observers who aren't able to travel. The first level, the Silver SAA 100 award requires 88 objects (all visible from North Carolina). The Gold SAA 100 Award requires all 100 objects to be observed. One further note, many of these objects are on other observing lists, especially Patrick Moore's Caldwell list. For convenience, there is a table mapping various SAA100 objects with their Caldwell counterparts. This will facilitate observers who are working or have worked on these lists of objects. We hope you enjoy looking at all the great objects recommended by other avid astronomers! Rules In order to earn the Silver certificate for the program, the applicant must meet the following qualifications: 1. Be a member in good standing of the Raleigh Astronomy Club. 2. Observe 80 Silver observations. 3. Record the time and date of each observation. -

Carl Sagan (1934-1996) American astronomer, astrophysicist, cosmologist, author, science popularizer and science communicator in astronomy and natural sciences Vega (Alpha Lyrae) The fifth brightest star in the night sky and the second brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere, after Arcturus. It is a relatively close star at only 25 light-years from Earth, and, together with Arcturus and Sirius, one of the most luminous stars in the Sun's neighborhood. Vega's spectral class is A0V, making it a blue-tinged white main sequence star that is fusing hydrogen to helium in its core. Vega will become a class-M red giant and shed much of its mass, finally becoming a white dwarf. Summer Triangle Mythology of Lyra In Greek mythology LYRA represents the instrument which was a gift from Apollo to his son Orpheus. The latter's bride, the beautiful Eurydice, had been killed by a viper and was lost in the underworld. Orpheus set out to try to save her and played such sweet music on his lyre that Hades, King of the Underworld, was charmed into giving permission for Eurydice to follow her husband home. He made one proviso, however, that Orpheus should not turn back to look at Eurydice until they were safely out of Hell. The pair set off but, at the very last moment, Orpheus could not resist turning round to see if Eurydice was following him and she was lost forever.
