Dear Friends –

As the days shortened this month we found new opportunities to focus on inner peace, drawing from Jewish wisdom and humility. I often need to remind myself that everything isn’t as it may seem. Brighter days will return and, as our tradition reminds us, we give thanks for each day – even those that compress sunrise and sunset!

I hope you will all have nurturing times this month with family and friends. I also hope you will join our Congregation efforts to learn, play, add light to our world, and to the lives of others. Together we can make each day even more beautiful.

All best to you and your families, from Jim and me – Judy

MISSION STATEMENT

Temple Bnai Israel is a welcoming Jewish community which offers a spiritual, religious, and social home for all Jews. We cherish a belief in one God, the Torah, prayer and the music and beauty of our Jewish culture. We are commanded and committed to passing these blessings on to all future generations.

We observe and celebrate Jewish traditions and laws, while remaining open to change which meets the needs of our time, and which will stand the test of time.

We intend to be a force for good and comfort as individuals and as a whole. We seek to offer justice, tolerance, and charity within the Temple Bnai Israel community, the larger Jewish community, and the non-Jewish worlds within which we live.

Our synagogue recognizes the equality of all Jews. Jewish men and women, including those Jews in interfaith marriages, are entitled to participate equally in all religious rites, and all secular and religious leadership positions. Our congregation also reaches out to all who welcome Judaism into their lives.

We believe in the ancient teaching: “to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with thy God.”

3 RABBINIC REFLECTIONS Rav Jeremy Schwartz

Sometimes, you don’t really have to be a rabbi to write the Rabbinic Reflections column. This year’s Hanukkah message, for example, is pretty obvious:

When those with power try to repress minorities, whether ethnic or religious, the minorities have more power to resist than some might realize. And the light of hope, the light of learning, the light of commitment to one another is a light that shines across generations, and always, eventually, grows. It is ultimately stronger than any force and more long-lasting than any structure.

May your Hanukkah celebrations bring joyous light to you, strengthening your hope and your commitment to our Jewish community and to the wider community in which we live.

And, for those of you who celebrate with Christian family, may that celebration of new life also be joyous to you, leaving space for the differences in your family, but also creating synergy in shared commitments.

Please note the following vacation and conference dates:

5 J-KIDS, Merle Potchinsky, [email protected]

J-Kids hosted another popular PJ Library PJ Party on November 13th , immediately following our 2nd annual Crafts and Collectibles Fair. We learned about values that Judaism places on animals, highlighted by a PJ Library book about King David and a spider! This coincided with the Jewish Day of Global Learning themed “Under the Same Sky,” where we are asked to consider our role as protector of our planet. Big concepts for little people, but animals are familiar, and concrete representations of our world and nature; a wonderful entrée for young people.

We look forward to participating in the Chanukah Party at the Temple, and a joint effort with Beth-El, on December 18th. We are also looking forward to spending a morning with our Young Israeli Emissaries in January, so stay tuned for updates!

For more information about J-Kids programming please contact Merle at [email protected] or phone the synagogue office at 860-423-3743.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL, Dara Bowling, Administrator, [email protected]

Our Rabbi and students demonstrate their “golden age of Spain” turban technique.

The group enjoyed an 11th century poetry and “wine” banquet, learned that “nobody expects the Spanish inquisition,” and hid Shabbat candles as did generations of crypto-Jews following the expulsion from Spain. Stay tuned as the intrepid group travels through much of the old world and a thousand years of Jewish history over the rest of this year. On a different note, many thanks to Morah Dara for volunteering to work with Jan Franklin of Mansfield’s Beth-El on the many details that will result in a sure-to-be wonderful Chaukah party!

Dara says, “Please attend, it’ll be great!” Marlene says, “Don’t forget to RSVP to me or Janis.” [email protected] [email protected]

6 BNAIFACTORS MAKE A DIFFERENCE AT TEMPLE BNAI ISRAEL

In May 2016, the Development Committee launched a new initiative to help ensure that Temple Bnai Israel is sustainable as a vibrant Jewish community today and into the future. Through direct solicitation of our members and past supporters, we asked people to step up their annual contribution to the Temple and be recognized as Bnaifactors, a clever take on the word “benefactor” and Bnai (children of) paying tribute to all those who have played a role in supporting our congregation.

We are delighted to report that the following individuals have taken this pledge and are infusing our budget with needed dollars to continue our mission, and the renewal we have undertaken this past year.

THANK YOU! Sheila B. Amdur Gerry Berkowitz Glenn & Tiffany Blumenstein Bruce & Sharon Brettschneider Judy Stein & Ken Dardick Michael & Gloria Gerald Jane & Robert Moskowitz Rita Pollack Rav Jeremy Schwartz and Merle Potchinsky Jerome & Nina Rosen

We are accepting pledges for the next fiscal year which began July 1, 2016. Payments may be made throughout the year. For more information about becoming a Bnaifactor, please contact Sheila Amdur at 860-477-0339 or e-mail [email protected] WELCOMING LOCAL IMMIGRANTS - A Mansfield Public Library Program

The Mansfield Public Library and Vernon Regional Adult-Based Education are working together to offer monthly workshops showcasing the richness of our neighbors from other countries. Each one of Vernon’s English as a Second Language students will showcase an aspect of their culture by providing dynamic, multi-cultural work- shops in an atmosphere of respect, appreciation and acceptance of all. The goal is to provide the community with enrichment opportunities as we contribute to an atmosphere of respect and acceptance for our local immigrants.

The interfaith working group invites you to attend the next free event in the series on Saturday, December 17 at 2:00pm

Omar Poleo from Venezuela will speak on December 17th, a special date in Venezuela’s history as it honors the life of the “Great Liberator” Simon Bolivar. Simon played a leading role in the establishment of Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Panama as sovereign states, independent of Spanish rule. Omar will speak of Venezuela’s remarkable geographic and ethnic diversity that make up the fabric of this marvelous country. Omar’s presentation will include a small tasting of Venezuela’s most famous confectionaries.

INTER-FAITH WORKING GROUP

The Inter-Faith Working Group brought together by the Temple’s Hochberg and Human Rights Committee has been very active since its formation this past Spring. The Working Group has acted to promote and support on-going initiatives, such as the Refugee Resettlement group and also WAIM’s Walk For Warmth. Also, for the first time, the Inter-Faith service preceding the Walk For Warmth had all three Abrahamic Faiths represented, Jewish, Muslim and Christian.

The Temple’s sponsored Sukkot Dinner at the No-Freeze Shelter was joined by other Faith groups, and we are also now working on developing shared scriptural learnings among all faiths.

By the time this issue of The Bulletin is published, we will have also sponsored our first major public dialogue, Hon- est Conversations with our Muslim Neighbors, a conversation with questions from the audience answered by Connecticut Muslims, held at ECSU.

The Temple has become the Inter-Faith leader in northeastern Connecticut and is increasingly recognized for its work. We welcome your ideas and participation. Please contact Sheila Amdur at [email protected] for further information.

OUR CARING COMMITTEE NEEDS NEW MEMBERS! PLEASE CONSIDER JOINING US IN HELPING OUR FELLOW CONGREGANTS WHEN THEY’RE IN NEED! NO MEETINGS! COMMUNICATION IS DONE VIA E-MAIL. CONTACT FRAN: [email protected] OR ELLIE: [email protected]

13 SARAH RATNER LIBRARY Sue-Ellen Kirkham, [email protected], Brenda Rosen, [email protected], and Scott DeShong, [email protected]

Dear Friends, we welcome Scott DeShong to our cadre of library caretakers. Scott is also one of the newest members of our congregation, and he brings a fresh new energy to your library’s management needs! Please speak to him about your ideas for making the library a more valuable part of your life.

Through a very generous, and greatly appreciated, donation from Mr. Samuel Wheeler, we now have the introductory volume, and fourteen additional volumes, of the Yale University Press “The Code of Maimonides,” (also known as the Mishneh Torah) with translations by many noted scholars of Judaica.

This is truly an amazing body of work, the most clear and thorough statement of Jewish law ever produced. The Medieval rabbi, commonly known as Rambam, is universally recognized for his influence on thought regarding halakha and religious philosophy.

These are our guides to almost every aspect of daily Jewish life, including business, religion, agriculture, marriage etc., as defined in the Torah and interpreted in the commentaries of the Talmud. This series presents an incredible fund of knowledge and, I believe, a wonderful experience into greater thought on our tradition.

Let me just share the content of the first two books:

Book One: The Book of Knowledge, has five treatises: The Foundation of the Torah; Discernment; The Study of Torah; Idolatry; Repentance.

Book Two: The Book of Love, discusses halakhic laws concerning “ Recitation of the Shema”; the wearing of Tefillin; Mezuzah and the Torah Scroll; The Blessings; and Circumcision.

Please stop by and take a look. You may well be captivated!

We wish you all a very happy Hanukkah!

Sue-Ellen, Brenda, & Scott

A SECRET TUNNEL, A DARING HOLOCAUST ESCAPE ATTEMPT - A FOLLOW UP TO DR. RICHARD FREUND’S LECTURE OF NOVEMBER 14, 2016. Submitted by Susan Meisler

Capturing Evidence; Recognizing Courage

Dr. Richard Freund, a professor of Jewish History at the University of Hartford, told an enthusiastic audience at ECSU that he was able to transform the destructive science of archeology to a non-invasive form of exploration by using technology and electric resistive tomography pioneered by gas and oil exploration.

Archeological remains were revealed with minimal disturbance of the site. According to Freund, archeology is not about artifacts; it’s about the culture they reveal. Freund described his excavations of the Great Synagogue of , and the vibrant culture of the “ of the North.” At its height, Vilnius had 12 synagogues to meet the needs of 90,000 Jews. He also described the evidence that documented the extermination pits in the Ponar Forest where 100,000 Jews were murdered by the Nazis and their sympathizers.

The Great Synagogue of Vilna

Excavations at the Ponar Forest revealed both destruction and courage. “Burn Brigades” of Jewish prisoners were forced to incinerate thousands of corpses. Freund showed evidence of the remains of a secret escape tunnel dug by prisoners desperate to survive. Although only 11 were successful, their testimonies, as well as the diary of a Polish farmer who lived not far from these pits, supplement the physical evidence of ashes and artifacts.

The audience previewed a Nova documentary about the Vilnius excavations that will be aired on PBS in April of 2017. The Holocaust and Human Rights Committee sponsored Dr. Freund’s presentation and hopes to show this documentary in the spring. Visits to the Vilnius exhibit at the Jewish Museum at the Greenberg Center for Jewish Studies, University of Hartford are encouraged.
