Barcelona Received: 16-X-2008 – Accepted: 10-III-2009 – Translated version Correspondence to: [email protected] Abstract The data from surface automatic weather stations show that in the area of the Llobregat delta (northeast of the Iberian Peninsula) we can observe greater precipitation than in nearby inland areas (Ordal, Collserola, Garraf), than on the other side of a massif located on the coast (Garraf) and than on the northern coast. This distribution of the precipitation could be explained by the formation of a nocturnal surface cold front in the Llobregat delta. In order to analyze in-depth the physical mechanisms that can influence the formation of this front (topography, sea and drainage winds), two rain episodes in the area were simulated with the MM5 mesoscale model, reproducing satisfactorily the physical mechanisms that favor the appearance of the front. One of its major conclusions was that, if protected areas are to be maintained in the long term, their essential roles and broader services, beyond biodiversity conservation, need to be emphasised. Many governments are finding it increasingly difficult to justify the maintenance of protected areas, if the wider benefits for local communities and the society at large cannot be demonstrated. This report represents an early attempt to develop wider arguments for protection, focusing on one narrow but important issue − the potential role of protected areas in helping to maintain water supply to major cities. It is a good time to look at the links between water and protected areas. The United Nations has proclaimed 2003 as the International Year of Freshwater, to help promote new and existing water resource initiatives. -

Provença 204-208, Barcelona, Spain. Abstract A very large amount of water has been pumped, in particular during the 1970s, from the Llobregat Delta main aquifer (Barcelona, Spain). This caused the salinization of important areas of this aquifer. This contamination process was accelerated by the construction of a new inland dock of the Barcelona Harbor. Since then, big efforts have been undertaken to conceptualize and quantify the groundwater flux and the salt water evolution in this aquifer, and to develop numerical models on the basis of the existing conceptual model.While water level history has been accurately represented in previous numerical models, salt transport results do not completely fit real data evolution. An exhaustive data review was carried out to correctly plan the use of the existing resources and to quantify the available water volumes. All available data, old and new, are often found in a fragmented and disconnected state due to the existence of multiple sources of information. All information from previous works and studies has been integrated. An important effort was devoted to the building of a revised geological model. -

ASSESSMENT OF SGD IN KARSTIC COASTAL MASSIF: AIGUADOLÇ BEACH (GARRAF) Pau Navarro Maestro Dídac Navarro Fernández Tutors: Jordi Garcia Orellana Mario Zarroca Hernández Degrees: Environmental Science and Geology geoWASU Environmental and February 2019, Bellaterra water surveys ABSTRACT Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is an important source of freshwater and nutrients to Mediterranean Sea, but is also related with anthropic pollution. Since the last decades a new emerging and successful ways to trace SGD appeared, as they are natural radioactive isotopes (223Ra, 224Ra, 226Ra, 228Ra and 222Rn) and electrical surveys (electrical resistivity tomography , ERT). Other methods have been less employed, but they have a great potential as electric induction (EI). This project describes and quantifies SGD and its nutrients driven input with these methods, never used before in Catalonia to asses SGD, in an anthropized coastal karstic massif. The study zone is Aiguadolç beach (Spain), the most southern beach in the Garraf massif, and the obtained SGD flows there were 9.7 ± 2.0 ·106 m3·km-1·yr-1, with the associated fluxes of DSi, DIN and DIP, which were 63 ± 13 mmol·m-2·d-1, 78 ± 16 mmol·m-2·d-1, -2 -1 + -2 -1 and 432 ± 91 μmol·m ·d , respectively. A NH4 flux of 74 ± 16 mmol·m -d was also estimated due to a + high concentration of NH4 in groundwater. This concentration exceeds the legal limits of drinking water legislation. This high contamination suggests an anthropogenic influence of the aquifer which could be due to waste water leaking from urban, agricultural or livestock activity or the Garraf landfill itself. -

España no sera rica mientras sus rios desemboquen en el mar Julio Alvarez Mendizabal, Spanish premier, 1835 (Spain won't be rich as long as its rivers flow into the sea) EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Transferring water from the Rhone to Barcelona is an exciting project which stirs our imagination twice : the aqueduct Languedoc - Roussillon - Catalogne (LRC) extends our vision of progress, where Mediterranean hydraulics have long had prominent standing, from the Roman bridge on the Gard to the Suez canal ; and it conveys a new solidarity between neighbouring Nations, on what is most essential to life. Yet, reality is as usual less poetic, and such a costly project has to be justified economically as well as environmentally. And of course, before going ahead, one must check whether there are any cheaper and more modest solutions to Barcelona's water scarcity. Clearly the Rhone is a huge Alpine river, and is by far the largest flowing into the Mediterranean ; but there's also a lot of water flowing down from the much closer Pyrenees into the Ebro ; the western part of Catalonia is part of the Ebro basin, and its river Segre, born in France, borders the basin of the Llobregat flowing directly from the mountains down to Barcelona. Why can't the regional water supply of Barcelona area, Aigües Ter Llobregat (ATLL) purchase some water to its nearest neighbour, the Ebro hydrographic Confederation ? The rumour has spread that all Ebro’s water was already allotted, and that it would be impossible to take back the water of the oldest State irrigation project in Spain ; worse, "Zaragoza"1 and even "Madrid" would particularly refuse to give a drop of the precious liquid to the head city of Catalonia. -

Email: Fierro: [email protected]; Edo: [email protected] Abstract: Can Sadurní’s cave, located in Begues (NE Iberian Peninsula), in the Baix Llobregat region, is an archaeological site with a wide stratigraphic sequence covering from the Epipaleolithic hunter- gatherers societies at the beginning of the Holocene to Roman times. During the excavations of the last years a large number of different raw materials used for the manufacture of axes have been recovered. The present study is focused on the Neolithic sequence. 31 axes and adzes have been characterised petrographically with the aid of a binocular microscope and transmission microscope. A great variety of rocks constitute the raw materials of these stone tools, ranging from contact and regional metamorphic rocks to plutonic and porphyric igneous rocks. The formers are the most abundant (up to 78%) and include hornfels, spotted phyllites, marbles, quartzites, slates and phyllites. -

C/ Martí i Franqués s/n 08028 Barcelona Resumen: La evolución reciente del hemidelta Sur del Llobregat (Barcelona) es un claro ejemplo de sistema natural dominado por la acción del hombre. Las necesidades de ocupación de la llanura y frente deltaico junto con la regulación del caudal del río han generado un fuerte desequilibrio sedimentario. El ascenso del nivel del mar a largo plazo inducido por el calentamiento global no hará más que agravar esta situación. El artículo presenta las disfunciones generadas y la difícil coexistencia entre la geomorfología y la actividad humana en 4 puntos representativos de la costa objeto de la visita de campo organizada en el marco de las “Xª Jornadas de Geomorfología Litoral”. En la primera parada, al sur de la unidad se observa el impacto causado por el puerto deportivo de Port Ginesta, responsable del cierre del sistema en términos sedimentarios. La segunda parada, en la zona central, es un ejemplo de evolución costera inducida por la acción del oleaje y la orientación de la costa. En la parada 3 se describen los trabajos de restauración de un sistema dunar. -

The inter-sectoral water transfer builds on a flexible approach which allows negotiation between the parties involved to adapt to the intensity of seasonal drought and priority water needs. In this European Union co-funded project, the ACA treats urban wastewater to different, reuse defined levels. The main clients are farmers who are obliged to stop using surface water in times of drought. In exchange for accepting treated wastewater the city obtains the protected freshwater for aquifer recharge. This is in large a social responsibility business model, which allows on one hand (i) ACA to deliver on its water supply mandate also in times of extreme water shortage; and on the other hand (ii) gives farmers a reliable water supply to cope with drought or to go beyond (low revenue) rainfed farming; while (iii) the city gains in terms of drinking water, environmental health, aquifer protection and more resilient short food supply chains.
