Public health is a discipline built on an academic tradition of inquiry involving research, By Jo Ivey teaching and professional practice to prevent disease and promote health in Boufford, MD, populations. This is in contrast with clinical medicine which focuses on the Dean, Robert F. individual. The nature of this system is that its organizational components, especially the governmental public health agencies, are nearly invisible to a large per- centage of the population. Yet it is only if the agencies do their jobs well and efficiently that citizens in this country can be confident about the purity of the food they eat, the water they drink, and the air they breathe. Public health laboratorians ensure that the blood supply is safe and public health regulatory specialists assure that pharmaceuticals are safe and effective. Public health sanitarians assure that food is safe to eat, that air and water are clean and waste disposal is efficient. When there is a disease outbreak, it is public health epidemiologists who intervene to help identify the problem, while health professionals of every type mobilize the appropriate response.
