Passoa Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology ABSTRACT The phylogenetics, systematics, taxonomy, and biology of Gelechioidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera) are investigated. This superfamily is probably the second largest in all of Lepidoptera, and it remains one of the least well known. Taxonomy of Gelechioidea has been unstable historically, and definitions vary at the family and subfamily levels. In Chapters Two and Three, I review the taxonomy of Gelechioidea and characters that have been important, with attention to what characters or terms were used by different authors. I revise the coding of characters that are already in the literature, and provide new data as well. Chapter Four provides the first phylogenetic analysis of Gelechioidea to include molecular data. I combine novel DNA sequence data from Cytochrome oxidase I and II with morphological matrices for exemplar species. The results challenge current concepts of Gelechioidea, suggesting that traditional morphological characters that have united taxa may not be homologous structures and are in need of further investigation. Resolution of this problem will require more detailed analysis and more thorough characterization of certain lineages. To begin this task, I conduct in Chapter Five an in- depth study of morphological evolution, host-plant selection, and geographical distribution of a medium-sized genus Depressaria Haworth (Depressariinae), larvae of ii which generally feed on plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A hitherto neglected gelechioid moth genus Eumenodora Meyrick (Gelechioidea: Elachistidae; Cosmopterigidae; Xyloryctidae) is redescribed. The genus, originally assigned to the Elachistidae and later transferred to the Cosmopterigidae, is monotypic. The single constituent species, E. encrypta Meyrick, 1906, has long been known only from the holotype, collected in Brisbane, Queensland (Australia). The specimen lacks its abdomen. The genus is characterized and the single recognized species redescribed based on recently collected adult males and a female. Evidence from morphology, supported by DNA sequences, is provided to support the placement of the taxon in the Hierodoris group of the Xyloryctidae, in spite of its atypical external appearance. A Review of Coelopoeta (Elachistidae), with Descriptions of Two New Species

Box 17, FIN-00014 University of Helsinki, Finland ABSTRACT. The genus Coelopoeta Walsingham, 1906 (Lepidoptera, Elachistidae), is reviewed. Three species are recognized, two of which are described as new: C. phaceliae Kaila, new species (California, USA) and C. maiadella Kaila, new species (Yukon, Canada). The genus former was considered monotypic and included only C. glutinosi (Walsingham) (California). Coelopoeta apparently is restricted to western North America. Diagnoses and descriptions are given for all three species. Additional key words: diagnosis, taxonomy, systematics. Walsingham (1908) described the genus Coelopoeta for one species, glutinosi Walsingham, which occurs in California. He placed the genus in Hyponomeutidae. He also recognized the association of Coelopoeta with Elachista. Barnes and Busck (1920) and Braun (1948) placed Coelopoeta in the Elachistidae, the latter author according to characters of the adult mouth parts, antennae, and wing venation. She recognized, however, differences in genitalia, especially those of the male, between Coelopoeta and other members of the Elachistidae. Hodges (1978) doubted the monophyly of Elachistidae sensu Braun (1948), and sug gested that Coelopoeta might be derived from the Oecophorini. He placed the genus in its own subfamily, Coelopoetinae, and kept it within the Elachistidae. Minet (1989) attempted to redefine the Elachistidae on the basis of the structure of pupal abdominal segments, the spinose gnathos in the male genitalia, the absence of dorsal spines in the adult abdomen, and several homoplastic characters. He excluded Coelopoeta from Elachistinae and even from his broadened concept of Elachistidae because of the different shape of the gnathos and the presence of dorsal abdominal spines in the genus. -

Caloptilia fidella (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), une nouvelle espèce mineuse pour la faune belge Le 6 novembre 2009, plusieurs mines de Caloptilia fidella (Reutti, 1853) (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) ont été trouvées sur Humulus lupulus L. (Cannabaceae) en bordure de la réserve naturelle de l'Ile aux Corsaires à Angleur (province de Liège). C’est la première fois que cette espèce est signalée en Belgique, en marge nord-ouest de son aire de dispersion. Les informations relatives à la biologie et à la répartition du papillon sont résumées. Samenvatting. It is the first record of the moth for Belgium and that increases the number of Belgian Gracillariidae to 98 species (De Prins & De Prins 2009, Buszko 2009, De Prins & Steeman 2009). -

An annotated list of Momphidae, Batrachedridae, Stathmopodidae and Cosmopterigidae (Lepidoptera) collected on the Maltese Islands is provided. Sixteen species are recorded (1 Momphidae, 1 Batrachedridae, 1 Stathmopodidae, 13 Cosmopterigidae), one of them is new to the Maltese Islands and Europe: Bifascioides leucomelanellus (Rebel, 1917) and three of them are new to the Maltese Islands: Mompha subbistrigella (Haworth, 1828), Anatrachyntis badia (Hodges, 1962), and Ascalenia echidnias (Meyrick, 1891). Mompha subbistrigella (Haworth, 1828) and Eteobalea serratella (Treitschke, 1833) are mentioned as new for Sardinia. Key words. Introduction The Maltese Islands are a group of small, low-lying islands situated almost at the centre of the Mediterranean, from 35°48'28"to 36°0'0"N and 14°11'04" to 14°34'37"E. They are 92 km south of Sicily and 252 km north of the Libyan coast. The total area of the archipelago is 320 km/sq. SINEV Summary A bamboo-feeding species Cosmopterix victor STRINGER, 1930 is mentioned from mainland Asia for the first time, with a description and illustration of its very striking dancing behavior. This behavior is regarded as a special adaptation providing the aggregation of adults on the host plants for mating and subsequent oviposition. Zusammenfassung Zum ersten Mal wird ein Fund der Bambus fressenden Art Cosmopterix victor STRINGER, 1930 vom asiati- schen Festland gemeldet. Dabei handelt es sich um eine spezielle Anpassung, um für eine Ansammlung der adulten Schmetterlinge auf der Wirtspflanze zur Paarung und anschließenden Eiablage zu sorgen. Introduction The genus Cosmopterix is an easily recognized group, composed of approximately 185 species worldwide, and distinct from other Cosmopterigidae by its characteristic wing pattern (SINEV 2002; KOSTER and SINEV 2003; KUROKO and LIU 2005). Although many species are nearly identical in wing pattern, their genital morphology bears striking differences (HODGES 1962; SINEV 1985, 1988, 1997). The East Asian fauna of Cosmopterix has been reviewed mainly by SINEV and KUROKO, and the Chinese fauna is in great need of further systematic study. In the summer of 2006 the first author spent approximately 30 minutes on Tian Mu mountain (Zhejiang Province, China) observing several specimens of Cosmopterix dancing on the leaves of unknown species of bamboo (Poaceae: Bambuseae). -

Unfortunately, the overview of research on their fauna in Serbia has not been done yet. Therefore, based on the data from the literature sources and the results of our research, the first overview of leaf miner fauna research in Serbia was made. It was found that 363 species of leaf miners were ascertained in Serbia so far. They are classified as follows: 270 species from 26 families of the order Lepidoptera, 61 species from 5 families of the order Diptera, 21 species from 3 families of the order Coleoptera, and 11 species from 1 family of the order Hymenoptera. The majority of species of the order Lepidoptera belongs to the families Gracillariidae (71), Nepticulidae (61) and Coleophoridae (37), of the order Diptera to the family Agromyzidae (53), and from the order Coleoptera to the families Curculionidae (12) and Chrysomelidae (7). All species of the order Hymenoptera (11) belong to the family Tenthredinidae. Monophagous and Oligophagous species are dominant among the identified species of leaf miners in Serbia. The majority of the species (57%) develop on woody plants. Most of them (30) on the species of the genus Quercus, Prunus (20), Malus (19), and Populus (19). -

The adult female is similar to that of B. picolella Busck, but the former lacks a signum. The male can be distinguished from that of Beltheca phosphoropa (Meyrick) by its longer vinculum and larger aedeagus. Adults of both sexes "dance" on leaves of different plants by anchoring one of their forelegs to a substrate and rotating around this pivot point. The anchored leg shifts slightly when the moth dances in large circles, moves to another region of the leaf, or changes the direction of rotation. There is no preference for rotating clockwise or counterclockwise. Dancing occurs all over the adaxial leaf sur face, but it can be localized. An adult was observed dancing around a water droplet and drinking from it. We hypothesize that dancing is a courtship behavior or a predator avoid ance tactic. A photograph of the adult and illustrations of the head, wing venation, and genitalia of both sexes are included along with a diagram of a dancing path. -
