Robin Hahnel American Economist United States Prof. Robin Hahnel is currently Mark and Melody Teppola Presidential Distinguished Visiting Professor at Willamette University in Salem Oregon, Co-Director of Economics for Equity and the Environment (the e3 network), and Professor Emeritus at American University where he taught for over thirty years. He has also taught at the University of Maryland at College Park, Lewis and Clark College, Portland State University, Manchester University (England), Catholic University (Peru), and the University of Havana (Cuba.) He received his BA in economics from Harvard University (1968), and his PhD in economics from American University (1979). He has traveled extensively advising on economic matters all over the world. He is best known for his work on participatory economics with Z Magazine editor Michael Albert. Prof. Hahnel is a radical economist and political activist. His work in economic theory and analysis is informed by the work of Karl Marx, Keynes, Piero Sraffa, Michał Kalecki, and Joan Robinson, among others. He is author of Green Economics: Confronting the Ecological Crisis, Economic Justice and Democracy: From Competition to Cooperation, The ABCs of Political Economy: A Modern Approach, Income Distribution and Environmental Sustainability: A Sraffian Approach, and Radical Political Economy: Sraffa Versus Marx and co-author of Quiet Revolution in Welfare Economics and The Political Economy of Participatory Economics and Alternatives to Capitalism: Proposals for a Democratic Economy. He has been active in various campaigns and organizations working for peace, economic justice, and environmental sustainability for fifty years. Most recently he worked on the Portland Climate Action Plan 2015 for the city’s Department of Planning and Sustainability. .

Grow- ing inequality of wealth and income is putting the famous American middle class in danger of becoming a distant memory as American children, for the first time in our history, now face economic prospects worse than what their parents enjoyed. We suffer from more frequent financial “shocks” and linger in recession far longer than in the past. Education and health care systems are being decimated. But is there a preferable and workable alternative? What would a viable free and democratic free society look like? Alternatives to Capitalism: Proposals for a Democratic Economy presents a debate between two such possibilities: Robin Hahnel’s “participatory economics” and Erik Olin Wright’s “real utopian” socialism. It is a detailed and at times technical discussion that rewards careful engagement. Those who put the effort in will, we hope, find that it illuminates a range of issues and dilemmas of crucial importance to any serious effort to build a better world. Is it worth devoting energy to thinking about alternatives to capitalism? There is a tradition within anti-capitalist politics which thinks not. CULTURE MACHINE VOL 14 • 2013 RED PLENTY PLATFORMS Nick Dyer-Witheford Introduction: Red Plenty Shortly after the great Wall Street meltdown of 2008, a novel about obscure and remote historical events provided an unexpected node for discussion of the ongoing crisis. Francis Spufford’s Red Plenty (2010) offered a fictionalized account of the failed attempt by Soviet cyberneticians of the 1960s to establish a fully computerized system of economic planning. Mixing historical figures – Leonid Kantorovich, inventor of linear programming equations; Sergei Alexeievich Lebedev, pioneering Soviet computer designer; Nikita Khrushchev, First Secretary of the Communist Party – with imaginary ones, and setting them all in motion through Kremlin corridors, rural collectives, industrial factories and the Siberian science-city of Akademgorodok, Red Plenty succeeded in the unlikely mission of making cybernetic planning a page-turner. But the interest it attracted from economists, computer scientists and political activists was not solely due to its narrative of scientific endeavor and political intrigue; it also owed much to timing. Appearing amidst austerity and unemployment, as the world market still teetered on the brink of collapse, Red Plenty could be interpreted in different ways: a) as a cautionary tale that, recalling Soviet debacles, reminds us capitalism remains the only game in town, even if it has behaved badly (‘There Is No Alternative’); or b) contra- wise, as a recollection of unrealized potentialities, whispering not just the quaint altermondialiste slogan, ‘another world is possible’, but what David Harvey (2010: np) identifies as the more cogent and subversive possibility, that of ‘another communism’. This paper takes Spufford’s novel as a starting point from which to embark on an examination of the computing platforms that would be necessary for a contemporary ‘red plenty’.

London: Verso. 148 pages, ISBN 978-1-7847-8504-8 Paper ($19.95) Reviewed by Dennis O’Hearn Univesity of Texas El Paso [email protected] Even before the fall of actually-existing socialism in the form of the Soviet empire, many activists and scholars asked what a humane transformation from capitalism to socialism or communism might look like. State socialism was clearly off of the agenda. Yugoslavia, arguably the most hopeful site of self-management and participatory economics before the 1990s, became a site of horror. What was left? This short book represents part of what emerged as a dialogue about transformation to a more humane post-capitalist world (more, later, about what is missing in the authors’ conception of “humane”). It is a dialogue between major proponents of two distinct approaches: one, a prescription for a participatory post-market economy, and the other, a strategy of transformation from capitalism. They call their approaches, respectively, participatory economics or Parecon (Robin Hahnel) and real utopias (Erik Wright). One should also mention that the Parecon model is largely the product of a long and fruitful partnership between Robin Hahnel and Michael Albert. There is much agreement in the book about ultimate goals: humanity, democracy, empowerment, equity. And the debate is respectful and even mutually laudatory. The book has been praised as an example of the productive and positive way left debate should proceed.

Hopkins Wright State University December 22, 2017 To be Presented at URPE, ASSA, Philadelphia 2018 Most proposals for democratic socialism include worker control of enterprises or democratic planning processes. While these institutions can theoretically address issues of class power, there is no reason to assume that power inequalities across gender or other categories will be resolved. The persistence of sexist or racist beliefs or expectations would likely undermine the ability for democratic economic decision making to eliminate discriminatory hiring, promotion, or pay practices. Thus, a feminist democratic socialism would require additional conditions. The Problem with Worker Cooperatives Advocates of a democratic socialist alternative to capitalism propose worker control of firms or democratic planning processes. Burczak’s (Burczak 2006) proposal for a model of socialism starts from the premise that markets would continue to be an important part of a feasible socialist economy. Instead he proposes and economy filled with worker cooperatives and focuses on a solution to facilitate how young people would buy into the cooperative. Worker control of enterprises would overthrow the power base of the owners of capital because workers would now be the owners of capital. This replaces the self-interest of capitalists with the self-interest of workers. The capitalist logic of production for profit would be replaced with production decisions that satisfy the needs of workers. The goal of production becomes the creation and maintenance of worker's livelihoods. Firms would not choose to outsource production to China, for example (Wolff 2016).

Foundations of Class Analysis An intensive four-week course offered by Professor Erik Olin Wright Department of Sociology University of Wisconsin January 28-31, March 4-22, 2002 Department of Sociology University of California, Berkeley Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 4-6 From the middle of the 19th century until the last decade of the 20th, the Marxist Tradition provided the most systematic body of ideas and social theory for radical critics of capitalism as an economic system and social order. Even those critics of capitalism who did not directly identify with Marxism relied heavily on Marxist ideas about class, exploitation, commodification, the state, ideology. And while many anticapitalists felt that the specific political project that came to be identified with Marxism -- the revolutionary overthrow of capitalism -- was deeply flawed, they nevertheless shared the emancipatory vision of a socialist society within which class inequalities attenuated and the economy was democratically controlled in the interests of everyone. Above all it was this defense of a vision of an emancipatory alternative to capitalism which gave Marxism its emotional and ideological power: we might live in a world of great misery, inequality and oppression, but an alternative was both imaginable and achievable. In recent years, particularly since the end of Communist regimes in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, Marxism has declined as an intellectual force. TINA – “there is no alternative” – has replaced confidence in the possibility of radical alternatives. Instead of being viewed as a threat to capitalism, talk of socialism now seems more like idle utopian musing. Culture, discourse and identity have replaced class and economic inequality as the central themes in critical social theory.
