  • The Stone Roses Styl
STYLE GUIDE 2011 The Stone Roses were an English alternative rock band formed in Manchester in 1983. They were one of the pioneering groups of the Madchester movement that was active during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The band’s most successful lineup consisted of vocalist Ian Brown, guitarist John Squire, bassist Gary “Mani” Mounfield, and drummer Alan “Reni” Wren. The band released their début album, The Stone Roses, in 1989. The album was a breakthrough success for the band. Their second album Second Coming was released in 1994. The Stone Roses was released in April 1989, initially to mixed reviews, and entered the UK Albums Chart at number 32 in mid-May, the highest position it would reach that year. This was followed with the single “She Bangs the Drums”, which gave them a top forty UK hit, and a number one on the UK In- dependent Chart, and by that point they were receiving much greater press attention and were selling out shows across the country. Later in 1989 the band released a double A-side single, “Fools Gold/What the World Is Waiting For”, which reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart in November. Originally intended as a B-side, “Fools Gold” quickly became the Roses’ most famous song and a performance of it on Top of the Pops cemented their national fame. It gave them their first top ten hit and the album rose to number nineteen in the chart early the following year. The group won four NME Readers poll awards that year; Band of the Year, Best New Band, Single of the Year (for “Fools Gold”) and Album of the Year (for their debut album).

1984 23 October Hampstead Moonlight (anti-heroin benefit) Date: 23rd October 1984 Location: Hampstead Moonlight, London, England Supporting: Mercenary Skank, High Noon, and a secret special guest, who turned out to be Pete Townshend. Media reviews: Memories of fans: I am not the biggest fan of The Stone Roses but it turns out I was at their first ever gig. So, a mate of mine told me that I should share my story and I was pointed in your direction. So here we go. You can have this. It was the first time I saw Pete Townshend live and I was (and still am) an avid fan of The Who, but before I seen him I waited anxiously and watched the support group. Recently I found out that they were a little known group called The Stone Roses. They turned out to be the biggest band of their generation. I remember very little of their set. But I can remember them like The Cure. I remember how the singer was in charge of the stage. That was a week after I turned 17 and not only did I manage to see my hero, Pete Townshend for the first time but I managed to see, possibly the inventors of Brit-pop and saviours of British guitar rock, The Stone Roses. I saw the Stone Roses at Leicester many years later and there was a difference but more memory with the latter. I was speaking to a friend in Brussels who did have photos of The Stone Roses live at the Moonlight in 1984 but sold them around 1995 to a collector in London for £700.

  • Home Taping: Country Rock
Home Taping: Country Rock At the time of his death, Gram Parsons was in grave danger of being taken for granted. Although it was accepted that he had 'invented' the musical style known as Country Rock, this was simply being overlooked in a mass outbreak of droopy-moustached yee-hawism. Today it is called New Country and has become the fastest growing market in American popular music. The roots of Country Rock lie in the 1960s recordings of West Coast artists Buck Owens and His Buckaroos, Merle Haggard and The Strangers and the sublime pop- country songwriting of the (late) great Harlan Howard. This was known as the Bakersfield sound, where true-to-life songs and fast shuffle rhythms, often performed by musicians attired in flashy Western duds, caught the creative imagination of approximately one person: the young Gram Parsons. When Parsons founded The International Submarine Band in 1966, rock and roll was entering its progressive phase and the Nashville hit machine was at the peak of its powers - a diabolical climate in which to attempt a revolution. 28 years later we see Gram Parsons in his true light: a man alone with no precedent, no road map, just a vision that has at last begun to register with the record buying public. Today Gram Parsons’s spirit lives on in the music of Marty Stuart, Travis Tritt, Vince Gill. And twenty-something years ago, awestruck by the imports in the windows of London's One Stop or Musicland, a small throng of fans were also travelling without a road map.

THE STONE ROSES: MADE OF STONE Synopsis In 2012, a resurrection no one thought possible took place when legendary band, The Stone Roses reformed after 16 years. With unprecedented access to previously unseen archive footage, MADE OF STONE is a revealing journey through the life of one of the most revered and influential bands in British music history. Acclaimed film-maker Shane Meadows brings his unique directorial style, humour and emotional depth to the film, capturing the band at work and in their everyday lives as they rehearsed for their much-anticipated reunion, which culminated in three triumphant homecoming gigs at Manchester's Heaton Park in front of 220,000 adoring fans. Incorporating never-seen-before material spanning the band’s musical history, the personal experiences of many of those touched by the band and their music, and unparalleled access to the record-breaking sell-out concerts which took place in Summer 2012, this is the definitive record of the definitive band of the past 25 years. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Shane Meadows In 1990 I was 17, and had a ticket for Spike Island. For someone from a town like Uttoxeter, this was a big deal. But the night before the gig, I took acid, and had the most horrendous trip ever. For some reason, I gave my ticket away to some bloke I met in the street. I woke up the next morning and realised what I’d done but the bus had left, and I wasn’t going to Spike Island. Roll on 22 years, and Ian Brown rings to tell me my favourite band of all time are getting back together again.

Chapter 6 SAVING MARGARET FROM THE GUILLOTINE: INDEPENDENT MUSIC IN MANCHESTER FROM THE RISE OF THATCHER TO THE RISE OF BLAIR* 1. From Punk to Britpop: Manchester 1976–1994 Amidst the shifts in mass communication of the mid-late twentieth century, Perry Anderson emphasised the importance of the growing use of the colour television in the cultural shift towards postmodernity.1 These radical pop cultural changes in the 1960s meant that pop music, fashion, and television became key media for carrying cultural change and challenging traditional authority, particularly in the form of estab- lished religious authority, as Callum Brown has shown, to which we could equally add political and most forms of establishment authority.2 Of course, cultural change and challenges to traditional authority almost inevitably lead to a changing of the guard and we have seen this most strikingly in the emergence of Thatcherism, more speci¿cally, and neoliberalism, more generally. Changes in television, fashion, and pop music are dependent on a number of subcultural trends and movements which are likewise part of the generation of wider cultural changes, as well as epitomising the tensions between challenging the traditional authority and becoming the new authority.
