Dictionary of Westerns in Cinema
PERFORMING ARTS • FILM HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts, No. 26 VARNER When early filmgoers watched The Great Train Robbery in 1903, many shrieked in terror at the very last clip, when one of the outlaws turned toward the camera and seemingly fired a gun directly at the audience. The puff of WESTERNS smoke was sudden and hand-colored, and it looked real. Today we can look back at that primitive movie and see all the elements of what would evolve HISTORICAL into the Western genre. Perhaps the Western’s early origins—The Great Train DICTIONARY OF Robbery was the first narrative, commercial movie—or its formulaic yet enter- WESTERNS in Cinema taining structure has made the genre so popular. And with the recent success of films like 3:10 to Yuma and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, the Western appears to be in no danger of disappearing. The story of the Western is told in this Historical Dictionary of Westerns in Cinema through a chronology, a bibliography, an introductory essay, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on cinematographers; com- posers; producers; films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Dances with Wolves, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, High Noon, The Magnificent Seven, The Searchers, Tombstone, and Unforgiven; actors such as Gene Autry, in Cinema Cinema Kirk Douglas, Clint Eastwood, Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, and John Wayne; and directors like John Ford and Sergio Leone. HART William S. Hart came to the movies in 1914 from a long line of theatrical ex perience, mostly Shakespearean and while to many he is the strong, silent Western hero of film he is also the peer of John Ford as a major force in shaping and developing this genre we enjoy, the Western. In 1889 in what is to become Oklahoma Territory the Cherokee Strip is just a graz ing area owned by Indians and worked day and night be the itinerant cowboys called 'tumbleweeds'. Alas, it is the end of the old West as the homesteaders are moving in . Hart becomes involved with a homesteader's daughter and her evil brother who has a scheme to jump the line as "sooners". The scenes of the gigantic land rush is one of the most noted action sequences in film history. -

It was reissued as Rocketship in 1949. 1914 The Perils of Pauline 1936 Flash Gordon 1/21/2020 Perils of Nyoka Cliffhangers - Chatsworth 3 Movie Serial History • The movie serial or chapter play, was a popular motion picture form during the 1930’s to 1950’s. • Each chapter was screened at a movie theater for one week, and ended with a cliffhanger, in which characters found themselves in perilous situations with little apparent chance of escape. • Viewers had to return each week to see the cliffhangers resolved and to follow the continuing story. Movie serials were especially popular with children, and for many youths in the first half of the 20th century, a typical Saturday matinee at the movies included at least one chapter of a serial, along with animated cartoons, newsreels, and two feature films. -

We would, also, like to pay tribute to the first airing of “The Lone Ranger” television show on the day after Mr. Moore’s 35th birthday in 1949. The show has been on the air now for 65 years. Here’s to Mr. Moore and The Lone Ranger…..Hi-Yo, Silver, Away!!!!!!!!!!! THE SILVER BULLET Page 2 Introduction and Personal Message from Dawn Moore Dad's centennial celebration is a perfect opportunity for me to thank his fans for their enduring love and support of his memory! I never tire of hearing, "Your father was my hero!" To be honest, who I am is profoundly moulded by the lessons of this fictitious (?) character. It's al- most as if I had two fathers! The fun loving goofball and his alter ego - the wise and heroic cowboy. He knew he was blessed to have the opportunity to portray this character that indelibly changed his life and he embraced all that entailed. The Lone Ranger Creed became his creed. I, too, am blessed to continue to experi- ence the enduring affection of his fans. Such a treat! With deep appreciation, Dawn Moore I S S U E 1 0 8 - SEPTEMBE R 2 0 1 4 - VOL. 26 NO.
