DewarpNet: Single-Image Document Unwarping With Stacked 3D and 2D Regression Networks Sagnik Das∗ Ke Ma∗ Zhixin Shu Dimitris Samaras Roy Shilkrot Stony Brook University fsadas, kemma, zhshu, samaras, [email protected] Abstract Capturing document images with hand-held devices in unstructured environments is a common practice nowadays. However, “casual” photos of documents are usually unsuit- able for automatic information extraction, mainly due to physical distortion of the document paper, as well as var- ious camera positions and illumination conditions. In this work, we propose DewarpNet, a deep-learning approach for document image unwarping from a single image. Our insight is that the 3D geometry of the document not only determines the warping of its texture but also causes the il- lumination effects. Therefore, our novelty resides on the ex- plicit modeling of 3D shape for document paper in an end- to-end pipeline. Also, we contribute the largest and most comprehensive dataset for document image unwarping to date – Doc3D. This dataset features multiple ground-truth annotations, including 3D shape, surface normals, UV map, Figure 1. Document image unwarping. FACES OF THE REFORMATION Gutenberg’s invention helped Johannes Gutenberg spread the ideas of the Reformation Born: 1395? | Mainz, Germany to the masses Died: 1468 | Mainz, Germany Could Johannes Gutenberg have known when he first conceived the idea of moveable type that it would contribute to the spread of the Reformation and the Renaissance and lead to the education of all levels of society? One might question his presence in the “Faces of the Reformation” series. But considering that his presses printed not only Luther’s 95 Theses but also the papal indulgences that sparked Luther’s polemic pen, it seems fitting that he should be included. Gutenberg was born about 1395 as the son of a metalsmith, and he became acquainted with the printing business at a very young age. His invention of the moveable type press made the mass production of books a reality that would change the world. By 1450, his new invention was operating. As with most new ideas of this scale, the road was not smooth. In 1446, Johann Fust, Gutenburg’s financial backer, won a lawsuit against him regarding repayment of the funds. Gutenberg’s employee and son-in-law, Peter SchÖffer, testified against him. Before this lawsuit was finalized, Gutenberg had printed a Latin Bible that contained 42 lines of Scripture per page. This “42-line Bible” is known as the Gutenberg Bible. The press for the Bible, Gutenberg’s masterpiece, along with a second book containing only Psalms, was lost to Fust in the court case. The Psalter was published after the court case with no mention of Gutenberg; only Fust’s and SchÖffer’s names appear as the printers. -

Social and recreational club libraries are not included, and school libraries are not extensively covered. Although it is possible to trace the history of Malaysia's libraries back to the first millenium of the Christian era, there are few written records pre-dating World War II. The lack of documentation on the early periods of library history creates an emphasis on developments in the modern period. This is not out of order since it is only recently that libraries in West Malaysia and Singapore have been recognized as one of the important media of mass education. Lack of funds, failure to recognize the importance of libraries, and problems caused by the federal structure of gc,vernment are blamed for this delay in development. Hinderances to future development are the lack of trained librarians, problems of having to provide material in several different languages, and the lack of national bibliographies, union catalogs and lists of serials. Century Historiography of the Radical Reformation
Toward a Definition of Sixteenth - Century habaptism: Twentieth - Century Historiography of the Radical Reformation James R. Coggins Winnipeg "To define the essence is to shape it afresh." - Ernst Troeltsch Twentieth-century Anabaptist historiography has somewhat of the character of Hegelian philosophy, consisting of an already established Protestant-Marxist thesis, a Mennonite antithesis and a recent synthesis. The debate has centred on three major and related issues: geographic origin, intellectual sources, and essence. Complicating these issues has been confusion over the matter of categorization: Just who is to be included among the Anabaptists and who should be assigned to other groups? Indeed, what are the appropriate categories, or groups, in the sixteenth century? This paper will attempt to unravel some of the tangled debate that has gone on concerning these issues. The Protestant interpretation of Anabaptism has the longest aca- demic tradition, going back to the sixteenth century. Developed by such Protestant theologians and churchmen as Bullinger, Melanchthon, Men- ius, Rhegius and Luther who wrote works defining and attacking Ana- baptism, this interpretation arose out of the Protestant understanding of the church. Sixteenth-century Protestants believed in a single universal church corrupted by the Roman Catholic papacy but reformed by them- selves. DESIGN DOCUMENT: BOOKS DATABASE Ashish Gupta Vishal Y8140 Y8578 Group No.09 ABSTRACT The project is based on a book database system pertaining to various needs of the user. The basic interface involves querying books according to language, title, author, publisher, ISBN. We support services for buying and selling used books or books used in specific IIT Kanpur courses. We build a personal profile page which is used for handling the transactions between various students. We implement a "recommendation system" for recommending books to be used in a particular course in addition to their availability in the library. The system gives advice for cheap used books available at the time, when that book is not found in the library. OUTLINE 1. Information regarding the book: Set of entities that support the store of books, authors and publication and general search queries for their availability in the library. Advanced search queries are also provided. 2. Information regarding buying/selling: Set of entities that support personal profile of the students and transactions. It also handles notifications to be sent to the sellers as well as the buyer when there is a successful transaction. 3. Information regarding courses at IITK: Stores recommended books for different courses at IITK, which in turn are searched directly in library and results are provided to user. QUERIES AND FUNCTIONALITY 1. The students can browse the book without logging in, however in order to buy/sell books they need to log in with a username and password and the username can be used as key for students. 2. -

Name Date Chinese Inventions - Paper & Movable Type Printing By Vickie Invention is an interesting thing. Sometimes, an invention was developed to fulfill a specific need. Other times, it was simply a chance discovery. Looking back in history, there are two Chinese inventions that fell into the first category. They are paper and movable type printing. Long before paper was invented, the ancient Chinese carved characters to record their thoughts on tortoise shells, animal bones, and stones. Since those "writing boards" were heavy and not easy to carry around, they switched to writing on bamboo, wooden strips, and silk. The new alternatives were clearly better, but they were either still heavy or very costly. Then, during the Western Han dynasty (202 B.C. - 8 A.D.), paper made its debut. Its inventor is unknown. When paper first came out, it was not easy to produce in large quantities. And its quality was poor. Several decades later, a palace official named Tsai Lun (also spelled as Cai Lun) had a breakthrough in the papermaking process. He experimented with different materials and eventually settled on using tree bark, rags, and bits of rope to produce paper. He presented his first batch of paper to the emperor of the Eastern Han dynasty in 105 A.D. Tsai Lun's technique of making paper became an instant hit! It was quickly introduced to Korea and other countries nearby. In 751 A.D., Arabs learned the technique from the Chinese soldiers they captured in a war. They passed it on to Europe and, eventually, other parts of the world.
