The meticulous handwriting, no smudges, tiny. Names, places, dates, reflections. The notebook of the final fevered days. The yellowed and decrepit letters, the dust of decades. The coin of the kingdom of the mad dangles on my chest to remind me of the eternal oscillation of human fortunes. The book, perhaps the only remaining copy, has never been opened. The names are the names of the dead. My names, and those who have travelled those twisting paths. The years we have been through have buried the world's innocence for ever. I promised you not to forget. I've kept you safe in my memory. I want to recall everything, right from the beginning, the details, chance, the flow of events. Before distance obscures my backward glance, muffling the hubbub of voices, of weapons, armies, laughter, shouts. And at the same time only distance allows us to go back to a likely beginning. 1514, Albert Hohenzollern becomes archbishop of Magdeburg. At the age of twenty-three. More gold in the Pope's coffers: he also buys the bishopric of Halberstadt. 1517, Mainz. The biggest ecclesiastical principality in Germany awaits the appointment of a new bishop. If he wins the appointment, Albert will get his hands on a third of the whole German territory. He makes his offer: 14,000 ducats for the archbishopric, plus 10,000 for the papal dispensation that allows him to hold all these offices. The deal is negotiated via the Fugger bank of Augsburg, which anticipates the sum required. Once the operation is concluded Albert owes the Fuggers 30,000 ducats. The bankers decree the mode of payment. Albert must promote the sale of the indulgences for Pope Leo X in his territory. The faithful will make a contribution to the construction of St Peter's basilica, and will receive a certificate in exchange: the Pope absolves them of their sins. Only half of the takings will go to the Roman builders. Albert will use the rest to pay the Fuggers. The task is given to Johann Tetzel, the most expert preacher around. Tetzel travels the villages for the whole of the summer of '17. He stops on the borders with Thuringia, which belongs to Frederick the Wise, Duke of Saxony. He can't set foot there. 8 Frederick is collecting indulgences himself, through the sale of relics. He doesn't tolerate competitors on his territories. But Tetzel is a clever bastard: he knows that Frederick's subjects will happily travel a few miles beyond the border. A ticket to paradise is worth the trip. The coming and going of souls in search of reassurance infuriates a young Augustinian friar, a doctor at Wittenberg university. He can't bear the obscene market that Tetzel has set in motion, with the Pope's coat of arms and the papal bull in full view. 31st October 1517, the friar nails ninety-five theses against the traffic in indulgences, written in his own hand, to the northern door of Wittenberg church. His name is Martin Luther. With that gesture the Reformation begins. A starting point. Memories reassembling the fragments of an era. Mine. And that of my enemy: Q. Carafa's eye (1518) Letter sent to Rome from the Saxon city of Wittenberg, addressed to Gianpietro Carafa, member of the theological meeting held by His Holiness Leo X, dated 17th May 1518. To the most illustrious and reverend lord and honourable master Giovanni Pietro Carafa, at the theological meeting held by His Holiness Leo X, in Rome. My most respected, illustrious and reverend lord and master, Here is Your Lordship's most faithful servant's report on what is happening in these remote marshlands, which for a year now appears to have become a focus for all manner of diatribes. Since the Augustinian monk Martin Luther nailed his notorious theses to the portal of the Cathedral eight months ago, the name of Wittenberg has travelled far and wide, on everyone's lips. Young students from bordering states are flowing into this town to listen to the preacher's incredible theories from his own mouth. In particular, his sermons against the buying and selling of indulgences seem to have enjoyed the greatest success among young minds open to novelty. What was until yesterday something perfectly ordinary and undisputed, the remission of sins in return for a pious donation to the Church, seems today to be criticised by everyone as though it were an unmentionable scandal. Such sudden fame has made Luther pompous and overbearing; he feels as though he has been entrusted with a supernatural task, and that leads him to risk even more, to go even further. Indeed yesterday, like every Sunday, preaching from the pulpit on the gospel of the day (the text was John 16, 2: 'They shall put you out of the synagogues'), he linked the 'scandal' of the market in indulgences with another thesis, one which is to my mind even more dangerous. Luther asserted that one should not be overly frightened of the consequences of an unjust excommunication, because that concerns only external communion with the Church, and not internal communion. Indeed only the latter concerns God's bond with the faithful, which no man can declare broken, not even the Pope. Furthermore, an unjust excommunication cannot harm the soul, and if it is supported with filial resignation towards the Church, it can even become a precious merit. So if someone is unjustly excommunicated, it can even be seen as a precious merit. So if someone is unjustly excommunicated, he must not deny with words or 9 actions the cause for which he was excommunicated, and must patiently endure the excommunication even if it means dying excommunicated, and not being buried in consecrated ground, because these things are much less important than truth and justice.

    Toward a Definition of Sixteenth - Century habaptism: Twentieth - Century Historiography of the Radical Reformation James R. Coggins Winnipeg "To define the essence is to shape it afresh." - Ernst Troeltsch Twentieth-century Anabaptist historiography has somewhat of the character of Hegelian philosophy, consisting of an already established Protestant-Marxist thesis, a Mennonite antithesis and a recent synthesis. The debate has centred on three major and related issues: geographic origin, intellectual sources, and essence. Complicating these issues has been confusion over the matter of categorization: Just who is to be included among the Anabaptists and who should be assigned to other groups? Indeed, what are the appropriate categories, or groups, in the sixteenth century? This paper will attempt to unravel some of the tangled debate that has gone on concerning these issues. The Protestant interpretation of Anabaptism has the longest aca- demic tradition, going back to the sixteenth century. Developed by such Protestant theologians and churchmen as Bullinger, Melanchthon, Men- ius, Rhegius and Luther who wrote works defining and attacking Ana- baptism, this interpretation arose out of the Protestant understanding of the church. Sixteenth-century Protestants believed in a single universal church corrupted by the Roman Catholic papacy but reformed by them- selves. Historians have often recognized that the incident was used to attack English Baptists in the seventeenth century, but there has been little systematic exploration of the processes behind this. This article suggests that recollections of Münster in later seventeenth-century England were a species of ‘cosmopolitan memory’ – an internationally shared memory of trauma put to distinctive local uses. References to Münster served as ways for English writers to tie nonconformists to specific acts of religious violence in England, including the Civil Wars and Thomas Venner’s 1661 rising in London, without directly recalling these events. Historical discussions of the Münster rising therefore often directly transformed German Anabaptists into Quakers or Fifth Monarchists. Condemnations of the violence in the German city were also used by Congregationalists and Presbyterians to differentiate themselves from Baptists and Quakers and to emphasize their orthodoxy. Some Baptist writers responded by disclaiming their links to continental Anabaptists, while others moved to question the established historiography around the Münster rising. This article demonstrates these points through a range of sources, including sermons, letters, commentaries, controversial literature and almanacs.

    THE COUNTER-REFORMATION IN SCOTLAND THE BEGINNINGS I To appreciate aright the difficulties that confronted the Scottish Reformed Church at the outset of its career, and to understand fully the deep problems that face the Reformed Churches today in Scotland, one must study with attention what is known in history as the Counter-Reformation or Catholic Revival. But either of these descriptions of a great and ambitious movement is misleading, inasmuch as the movement was neither the fruit of, nor was it characterised by, any reformation in doctrine, or impressive spiritual revival. Undoubtedly the Roman Catholic Church did put forth an effort at the Council of Trent to reform its discipline, administration and educational system. It also tried to define and clarify its doctrinal position, with the result that medievalism was more firmly entrenched in the Church than ever. But some glaring irregularities and abuses were removed. Under influences set free by the Renaissance, and as a reaction from the impiety, irreligion and ignorance of both the secular and regular clergy, a form of mystic quietism originated in Spain which developed into an intense religiousness. Questions of property, jurisdiction, statecraft and state politics were added to compel Governments everywhere to share in the movement, to propagate, establish and maintain this " true religion " of the Counter-Reformation. Rome put forth remarkable energy in various directions ; and at the conclusion of the Council of Trent, in 1563, the influences at work in the Council developed and coalesced into a mighty force to check the long series of victories won by the Reformation.

Step Four: Document Analysis Do Document A with the whole class, modeling the kind of detail you expect in student answers to the Document Analysis questions. Homework: Analyze the remaining documents and answer the questions that follow. I DAY 2 - 45 minutes I Step Four (continued): Discussion of Documents Option One: Working in pairs or threesomes, have students discuss the answers to the first set of Document Analysis questions they did for homework. Using a different-colored pen than they used for homework, they may add to their answers. After five minutes, open the discussion of that document to the full class.     44 The Nature of the Anabaptist Protest Walter Klaassen Conrad Grebel College, Waterloo Introduction The purpose of this paper is to delineate the main features of the Anabaptist protest. We shall see this protest in the religious, social, and political context of the time, take note of the way in which this protest was viewed by Catholics and Protestants, and get some feeling of the Anabaptist consciousness of the radicalness of their protest. Anabaptism was part of that vast religious upheaval known as the Reformation. Its basic impulse was religious as it was for Luther and Zwingli, a yearning for a church, more faithful to the vision of its founder.1 But if in its origins Anabaptism was a religious movement, and if generally speaking it remained such, its peculiar characteristics made it the bearer of revolutionary social and political potential. This is, of course, no secret. Traditional Catholic and Protestant historiography made this the basis of the rejection of Anabaptists from the ranks of humanity. Their 2 judgments were usually slanderous and self-justifying. Even today so notable an historian as G.R. Elton rather uncritically reflects this tradition. He writes: During the heyday of Anabaptism it appeared to contemporaries that there were now three religions to choose from: the popish, the reformed, and the sectarian. It has sometimes been argued that the effective elimination of that third choice wrecked the prospects of early toleration and liberty for the private conscience. This is to mistake the true nature of Anabaptism. Since it always embodied a conviction 45 of sole salvation for the particular group of believers, and often also the chiliastic dreams of salvation realized in the destruction of the wicked with the establishment of Christ's kingdom on earth, it was in its essence markedly more intolerant than the institu­ tional church.

Three-quarters of the 1204 martyrs in the Spanish Netherlands were Menno- nites (almost half of them women) as op- posed to the Reformed (Calvinist) faith. As many as seventy percent of the martyrs in Ghent, Bruges, and Coutrai were Menno- nites. Two-thirds of the martyrs from the Lowlands documented in T. J. van Braght’s 1660 Martyrs’ Mirror were Flemish. “For the Flemish followers of Menno Simons it was `a century of struggle,’” writes histo- rian A.L.E. Verheyden. Where the brother- hood of the Northern Netherlands soon di- vided under the influence of the individual- ism of elders, “....the severe repression in the South saw the Mennonites rallying anx- iously around the church and expecting from it the greatest blessing,” Anabaptism in Flanders (Scottdale, Pa., 1961), page 9. Vielmehr sollte es ein Thema sein, das mir nahezu gänzlich unbekannt ist; ich wollte also „Neuland begehen“. Schnell kam ich auf die Zeit des Westfälischen Friedens, doch auch nach weiteren Recherchen wollte mir kein passendes Thema einfallen. Bald stieß ich auf die Täufer, die in Münster allgegenwärtig sind, über die ich jedoch kaum etwas wusste, außer dass sie einmal in den Käfigen am Lambertikirchturm hingen. Gerade weil ich kaum etwas über die Täufer wusste, reizte mich das Thema umso mehr. Was hat es mit diesem Mythos auf sich? Das wollte ich unbedingt herausfinden. Besonders interessant fand ich zudem, den historischen Umgang mit den Täufernim Hinblick auf die Skandalisierung zu untersuchen. Überdies hat mich die Neuzeit schon immer interessiert, insbesondere die Beziehung zwischen Weltlichkeit und Kirche – gerade diese Aspekte waren bei diesem Thema gegeben.
