Whether you’re stumbling into steaming Chinatown for an aromatic bite 21 years of after a Saturday night at Klub, or mincing down Old Compton Street to their Frith Street branch for a gossip and an Aperol Spritz, they’re always the perfect concoction or conclusion for a night out!

Now, they’re turning TWENTY-ONE years old. That’s the same age as Gigi Hadid. She’d love the Ku venues actually, we can just picture hr draped on a banquette in the Light Lounge, sipping a white negroni and unfollowing Selena Gomez on Instagram.

Anyway, in a world where many venues are being compromised, Ku are more cemented KU! in society than ever! They’re having a wild month, with ambidextrously ambitious plans for new nights, new looks, and new horizons! We asked PR manager Nieko and owner Gary to tell us all about it. NIEKO Hey Nieko! Tell us all about your super cool 21st birthday campaign. WELL, you know as well as a birthday celebration, we LUUURVE a brand shining new campaign to celebrate the milestone. So, our Ku boys have stripped it all back once again! Andrew Christian has styled our boys for this 21st Birthday campaign, which celebrates the recently re-furbished Ku Leicester Square venue - very “lighting installation” vibes; expected a cross between flesh- revealing Star Wars and The Saturdays’ “Not Giving Up” music video. Basically: We’re working with the talented Adam Khadaroo and Calum Ducat on producing some gorgeous imagery! The boys. In underwear. In our new venue. With sexy lighting. Hope you enjoy it! You’ve got so much going on at the moment! So much, right?! Since our Klub re-launch, our weekends continue to have capacity, party lovin’ crowds. So happy! So YES, Saturday 10th December, we’re bringing all those that have been involved in the new Klub back on decks for a set...one big epic birthday celebration with DJs, hosts, and those Ku boys in Andrew Christian! Have you got super-duper DJs as always? Our DJ line-up includes: Matt Bogard, Zach Burns, Chris Brogan, Sexshooters, Marilio, Who is Tom Fox?, Rodrigo Tancredi, Kerol Garcia, Charlie Holland, Pablo Eseeme, Lady Lloyd. Nd then it’s me, Vicki Vivacious, Tristan Temple and Jacqui Swallows hosting. And there’s a new cabaret night on Sundays isn’t there? YAAS! Now THIS is something VERY new for Ku, and Soho too! We’re launching KABARET SUNDAYS on 11th December - in our own Ku style. We’ll be bringing the sassiest, most entertaining cabaret talent to our Klub stage, every Sunday evening from 7pm. Just WAIT to you hear the mouth on our weekly host: Jacqui Swallows. She’ll be hosting, doing numbers, and introducing acts... such as and SUM TING WONG on our first night!

QX_1134_KU.indd 6 29/11/2016 17:37 JACQUI SWALLOWS “I’m so thrilled to be joining the KU family to bring the world Kabaret Sundays! I’m excited to be bringing a new cabaret show to Soho on a Sunday, with some of the best acts from across the UK, in a sexy sophisticated new set up with gorgeous boys, drinks and tonnes of talent. Coming in January will be a glorious new Lip Sync for your Life competition allowing new performers on the scene the chance to compete, showcase their talents and even win a slot performing with some of the best acts across the country at a Kabaret Sunday!” Finally, let us and our readers know what we can expect from the new KU! It’s an incredibly exciting time at Ku Group as we’ve finished refurbishments across our flagship venue: The Light Lounge, Klub, now Ku Leicester Square. We enter the festive season with a “new look Ku”, a new campaign, and an energy to provide you with the best Soho can offer. Of course, we’ve got the boys...but we’ve also got great DJ and cabaret entertainment lined-up, and some delicious events to get you OUT! Welcome... to our 21st birthday celebrations Soho! GARY Hey Gary! So Ku is 21 years old. Tell us about your journey. There must have been some amazing moments… It’s been an amazing 21 years. I opened Ku with then business partner Michal Joyce back in December 1995. I had been involved in a number of successful West End venues including The Village and Kudos, and after a short stint in PR I was delighted to get back to my calling, the bar business! Ku was launched at 75 Charing Cross Road, pre-internet, pre-apps, pre-twitter. It was an immediate success and became particularly famous as a young people’s bar, a ‘coming out’ bar if you will. I became the sole owner in 2000, and, facing a huge rent increase in Jan 2006, I made the decision to close the Charing Cross Road venue and find somewhere else. Ku closed its doors on Saturday January 8th 2005 to a capacity teary-eyed crowd singing along to The Spice Girls’ “Goodbye” A massive risk, all my savings, a brewery and bank of dad loan, and I launched Ku at a massively larger venue on Valentine’s Day Feb 14th 2007. Ku Lisle St was born. The risk paid off and Ku has gone from strength to strength since then, expanding to include: Klub, The Light Lounge, Ku Soho and She Soho. There is a great camaraderie amongst my management and staff. People are happy to work at Ku and that comes across, and compliments the customer experience. I have a great team, employ over 50 people and get great pleasure from seeing thousands of satisfied customers every week. I have been very lucky and appreciate everything that Ku has become. I like to think we appeal to all across the LGBT scene. We strive to exceed expectations. So you guys have had a major refurb! What was the process and the inspiration behind it? Well, over the last 15 months we had invested in The Light Lounge, our premium cocktail bar on the 1st floor at Lisle Street. Having such a premium finish up there, we realised we needed to bring all 3 floors to the same standard. The Klub was refurbished at the end of summer and then we turned our attention to the main floor. It was a case of giving back to the customers, giving them a venue they could be proud of. The Ku brand has become iconic in London and it’s important to keep the brand at the forefront of innovation. Ku is all about high standards of service, sexy boys and fun nights. We also want it to be about quality surroundings. I’m very pleased with the end results, and the feedback has been amazing. At Ku we strive to constantly evolve - pleasing existing, and attracting new clientele. And we hear there’s a celebration and auction on Thursday 8th? Our Annual Charity Auction will take place on Thursday 8th December as part of our 21st Birthday Celebrations. At 7pm sharp there is a free Champagne Toast, then it’s straight into the auction, which should last around an hour. The auction includes a vineyard trip to France, a Heineken trip to Amsterdam, a Trademark Bowie Mask, as well as restaurant vouchers and theatre tickets. There will be a massive raffle with lots of amazing Christmas hampers up for grabs. All proceeds are in aid of Diversity Role Models, a charity dedicated to education and the eradication of LGBT bullying. So join us for a great charity fundraising event, the party continues all weekend across all Ku Venues.

The Charity Auction on 8th December, the birthday celebrations on 10th December, and Ku’s weekly Kabaret Sundays will all be taking place at their Lisle Street Chinatown venue. 30 Lisle Street, WC2H 7BA. For more info, head to ku-bar.co.uk

QX_1134_KU.indd 7 29/11/2016 18:23 FEMM E

FEMME’s debut album, Debutante, has been one of the best releases of 2016. It’s a punchy half an hour that takes in all sorts of influences, from 60s girl groups, to afrobeat, to hip hop beats. The end-result is beautifully boisterous and inescapably catchy pop music. She’s invited some of her favourite producers and musicians to remix tracks on the album and later this month, she’ll be releasing the new collection as Debutante Remixed. She talks to Joe Holyoake about the new album, as well as the past, present and future of FEMME.

Everyone loves a birthday, more so when it’s not your own, so Friday night saw us continue our Vauxhall romance in the arches of Protocol at Fire for A:M’s sweet 16 party. The upward trajectory of London’s longest running Saturday morning afterhours shows no sign of slowing down, and promoter Louise Port does a sterling job week after week oiling the wheels and keeping the punters happy in her two-ring circus. This week’s A:M House room was the playground of Richard Jones, Terry Bryan and MisWhite while over in the A:M Turbocharged room Massimo Paramour, D’Johnny and Gonzalo delivered the goods accompanied by Mahdame MCing on the mic. Packed dancefloors made for an electric atmosphere, for those of us with a sweet tooth there was cake, obvs, and for the lucky customers also celebrating their birthday there was free entry. That’s one sixteen year old’s cherry well and truly plucked!

There’s nothing like starting the weekend early with a cheeky little dance on a Thursday night, and last week we couldn’t keep ourselves away from the pull of Gravity. Rocking the arches of Protocol at Fire instead of the usual Mirror Arch, the freshest and most uplifting sounds were delivered by the dream team of Zach Burns and Matt Bogard, and with QoV (Queen of Vauxhall) Louise Port at the helm, we were in very capable hands. Bringing with it a hot flush of Hiberic heat, to what is probably one of the wildest nights on the scene at the moment, Lady Olé at The Archway Tavern, is showing London how it’s done, Spanish style. And with their heady mix of cheesy dance, Los Alejandros knew exactly how to pour olive oil on that particular fire. royalty Pupi Poisson was there to throw a match and lit the place up with an unbridled performance of her hit Puton Verbenero, which sent the crowds into paroxysms. If the fact that the place is as close as you can get to paradise for a beard lover (even the drag queens, known locally as “cheap sluts” are hirsute) wasn’t enough, the guys there are very welcoming indeed, and rather tactile (our poor photographer almost got his t-shirt ripped-off - not that he was complaining!). Those looking for an antidote to the Brexit blues could do much worse than heading to this warm little pocket of resistance, where Spanish is the default language. We are still fanning ourselves and seem to have “Lady Olé is developed a sudden appetite for a bit of chorizo… showing London how it’s done.”

A new night called Magazine. We don’t want to blow our own trumpet (we’ve tried, can’t reach) but this is only going to be impossibly glamorous. Take it from us, we’ve seen it all. The glam celebrity guests. The glitzy press nights. The epoch-defining writing. It’s all part of the job. It is absolutely NOT Cup-a-Soups and Little Mix jokes. No. Magazine is ultra-chic fashionista Gok Wan’s latest pet project. He’s done with making Britain’s women go starkers on telly, he’s released a Chinese cook-book, and now, he’s ticking off curating a club night off his list. He’s out to make his mark on London’s nightlife with a head-turning, camera-flashing party experience. Down in the urban grittiness of The Steelyard’s arches, he’s invited a banging list of DJs and hosts to kick it off in aptly glam style. He’s promising uplifting deep and vocal house music from his set and is also going to be joined by Charlie Holland, The Mac Twins and Goldierocks for a night of unpretentious, no-filler clubbing that’ll have you in a dance-floor daze for days. There’s going to be catwalks, dancers, and enough major looks to fill a glossy magazine. Perhaps the sort you’d read on a short-haul flight to Milan. Be seen and be scene at The Steelyard this Saturday for a unique fusion of style and music, all the brainchild of national treasure, Gok Wan.

CHRIS CHANDLER - HOST It’s great to have something new, fresh and exciting on the scene. Looking forward to bringing back a bit of old skool clubbing!

CHARLIE HOLLAND - DJ I’m buzzed to be playing at Magazine this coming Saturday - it’s bringing something different to the London scene! So happy to be a part of something new, bringing that uplifting good time vibe, not to mention i’m playing alongside some of the most awesome people!

Those Glory kids have put Haggerston on the MAP. It used to be known for jacket potatoes and its ornate mosque, now it’s known for Jacqui Potato and Kate Mosque! Don’t know who they are? Wanna find out? Well then get down to The Glory! They’ve had a stonking (?!) year this year, with hundreds of packed-out, fudge-packing nights, frequented by celebrities, celesbians, and Cé Ó Coileàin. This Thursday 1st December, intergalactic drag super troupe DENIM, are descending debaucherously on The Glory’s hallowed stage, for a World AIDS Day fundraiser! They’re also situated a stone’s throw away from the historic Greenwich district! It’s great in Greenwich, they’ve got cobbles and a ship and everything. Very historic. We can picture Helena Bonham Carter swishing up to the George & Dragon through some midnight fog, whistling and swinging a cane. Anyway. This Friday 2nd December, they’re doing a World AIDS Day charity night special, with dynamic duo CK (Kelly Mild and Crystal D’Canter). That’s from 9pm onwards, with proceeds Crystal D’Canter & Kelly Mild going to the Make A Difference Trust.

The New Bloomsbury Set is a perfect place for a winter warmer! What’s a winter warmer, you ask? Well, it’s anything alcoholic! That’s our definition anyway. Prime examples of winter warmers are: mulled wine. Whisky. Eggnogg. Any cocktail with a stick of cinnamon on it. Ditto for anything garnished with a star anis. Anyway there’s loads of that at the New Bloomsbury Set. On Saturday night it was bustling with cosy twinks in cute jumpers, and festive hunks cosying up by the bar. Ideal Christmas festive vibes! Let the festivities begin! How festive.

Camp cabaret confection Le Gateau Chocolat is arriving at The Soho Theatre this Christmas season, with some sugar- coated slices of sonorous delight! Oozing with charisma and effortless talent, Le Gateau is a cabaret icon. With his strikingly unique look at operatic vocal chords, he’s been turning heads from Holloway to Hackney! In this latest show, Le Gateau mixes things into a heavenly mélange of satirical character performance, with sprinkles of his own personality thrown in. The show is called “Icons” so of course, it focuses on the people, the moments, the books, the relationships that have come to shape us, or the idea we aspire to. There’ll be all sorts of homages to iconique (yes, “iconique” spelled with q) artists and performers. A journey through pop to opera, with shout-outs to Kate Bush, Whitney Houston and Pavarotti to name but a few. What a dinner Le Gateau Chocolat: Icons is at The Soho Theatre, party THAT would be. 21 Dean Street, W1D 3NE. 12th December – 7th January, Anyway, throw on a ballgown and storm down to Soho, it’s 7:30pm. The Crumple Zone! What an adorable, pleasingly vowel-laden name for a play! Crumple crumple! We’re not sure what the “crumple” refers to. It’s festive-themed, so perhaps wrapping paper? Anyway, it’s gonna be in Clapham, so you’ll be having a CRUMPLE IN CLAPHAM! It’s a gay play, in case you were wondering. And it’s by Buddy Thomas! It’s set in a Staten Island apartment over Christmas, with four gays and a mystery visitor! We’ve all been there haven’t we. Anyway, of course fighting, bitchiness and hilarity ensure. Samuel Tucker is the long-suffering hopeless romantic Terry; Jack Armstrong plays Buck, who is hot (there might be more to his character than that, but that’s all we know so far); Tim Jennings is the naïve Matt; Kit Lloyd plays the ambitious, restless Alex; and Myles Rogerson (Rogerson, teehee!) is the dangerously confident young Roger.

The Crumple Zone is at The Clapham Omnibus, 1 Clapham Common, North Side, SW4 0QW. 19th – 23rd December. £16 tickets, £12 concessions. More info and tickets at ticketsource.co.uk/event/157673

The Adventures of Dick!

It’s top of everyone’s list this Christmas, isn’t it? Y’know, you can give us all the lego or bulge-less Action Men or socks you like, but we all just want DICK. And it’s dick ye shall get at the Leicester Square Theatre this December. If you’re the sort of person who finds dick, pussy and ‘he’s behind you’ jokes innately amusing (and if you’re not, u ok hun?), then you need to head down to Leicester Square for The Adventures of Dick! It’s like the pantomimes you used get taken to on school trips of yesteryear, but you can expect a fair few more fisting gags. And fewer regional celebrities as well. That’s a good thing. There was something quite sad about seeing Bobby Davro prance around the stage dressed as a genie. So, what can you expect? Dick and Dave the Cat head into S’HoHo for a festive blowout, only to discover the Queen Runt has been raising rents and buying up properties. See, pantos can be topical as well. Perhaps they’ll lay into Pret or Pizza Express or one of those Mexican chains that are popping up everywhere, called things like Chilango or Chilpotle or Chill-out. You know the ones. With the help of friends, including scene queen Dusty O as Sofonda Cox, can Dick help prevent London from becoming one homogenous blob? Now in it’s fifth year, and with previous reviews abundant in their praise, The Adventures of Dick! is at Leicester Square Theatre from 13th Dec, right up until 23rd December. Treat yourself to the festive filth-fest this Christmas!

Which brings us, pointedly, to rightly acclaimed performance artist Scottee’s directorial debut, Putting Words In Your Mouth. In a startling stroke of brilliantly perverse originality, he plays with and tries to explosively reclaim the lamest, dead duck of gay drag culture – lip-synching. But hey, there’s a killer twist; three black performers – Lasana Shabbaz, Travis Alabanza and Jamal Gerald - superlatively mime the fascistic bile of white, privileged bigots, creating an instant, electrifying, WTF? reaction. QX_1134_Artsbitching.indd 45 30/11/2016 14:39 Everyone’s favourite merchants of filth and fetish, Recon Recon, have released a new range of cycling gear. I know what you’re thinking. You’re probably thinking it’s going to be some sort of dildo-seat mechanism or lycra gimp masks. Well, you’d be wrong. It’s actually Cycling Gear just high-quality, Recon-branded cycling gear. Of course, you’re welcome to wear it to whatever kink night you’re into and cover it in unspeakable fluids, but you can also just wear it to cycle in! Not many other fetish items also have a practical application. Maybe we’re wrong. Perhaps you could hang your washing out on a sling or hammer in nails with one of those Fucking Machines. At the moment, there’s a cute little cycling cap, a skin-tight jersey and some of those all-in-one bib shorts that have a RE-ENFORCED GUSSET. The word GUSSET isn’t used enough in everyday parlance, so it’s always good when you have a genuine reason to say it. GUSSET. But, anyway, they’re all made of lightweight yet hardwearing performance fabrics that’ll keep you cool and won’t chafe. And, perhaps most importantly, they’re guaranteed to attract knowing glances wherever you go from pedestrians and drivers alike. When we cycle, we spend the vast majority of the time hypnotised by the arse of whoever cycling in front and if it were emblazoned with Recon, we’d have all the more reason to. So if you, or someone you know, are a cyclist in the streets and a freak in the sheets (of San Francisco), then Recon’s new range of cycling gear will ensure you can go from cycle superhighway to sex club without even needing to change.

QX recommends: The Vault

Nestled down a leafy side-street just a stone’s throw from the bustling business hubbub of Warren Street, is sexy, sociable underground den The Vault! If you haven’t heard of The Vault before, let us paint a picture – it’s a cruise bar, crossed with a gay bar, crossed with a sex club! It depends on the vibe when you’re there really. If you want to stand in your pants with an ice-cold beer and chat to some friendly, like minded guys. And if you want to throw all inhibitions (and clothing), to the winds, they’ve got STRIPPED on Monday and Thursday nights – their now notori- ous sexily sweaty naked nights. Something a lot of people don’t know about The Vault, is that it’s open at lunchtimes. There’s some deliciously sexy about popping to an ambiently-lit cruise bar on your lunch break isn’t it! It’s probably the sort of thing James Franco does (how you doin’ James?) And at lunch, it’s cruise not naked, which means you can stay in your clothes. Let’s be honest, get- ting a suit on and off would be a bit of a faff wouldn’t it. The Vault is at 139 – 143 Whitfield Street, WIT 5EN. As well being just round the corner from several Warren Street Station, The Vault is conveniently located in close Their cruising nights, CRUISE, are 1pm – 7pm from proximity to many of Central London’s universities! And Monday to Thursday, and 1pm – 1am on Fridays and on Sundays, it’s free entry for under 25s with ID. And on Saturdays. Then 1pm – 7pm on Sundays. £8 entry. Tuesdays, students go free from 7pm. Hooray! That’ll give you a nice break from your dissertations. Their naked nights STRIPPED, are 7pm – 1am on So, whether you’re a busy businessman, a salacious Mondays and Thursdays, £8 entry. student, or just a cheeky London chap who fancies trying something new, get yourself down to The Vault and live And their underwear nights are on Wednesdays and your life! Sundays, 7pm – 1am, £8 entry.
