Works will involve redeveloping two existing and constructing two new red porous courts which will meet official requirements for International Tennis Federation tournaments, as well as upgrading eight courts for club-level competitions. The existing Clubhouse will also be extended and refurbished as part of the project. Seating, pathways, fencing and court lighting will also be upgraded, allowing the centre to attract higher grade tournaments and improve the amenity for the local community. Plans of the proposed upgrades are on display on the Club noticeboard. The project is currently behind schedule due to delays by the State Government in execution of the project funding agreement and a longer than anticipated detailed design phase. These delays are not expected to impact the overall operations of the Club in a negative way. In terms of budget, the project is on track. Bi-monthly Project Control Group meetings are held between Wellington Shire, Tennis Victoria, Sport and Recreation Victoria, Latrobe Authority and Sale Tennis Club where the project status and next steps are discussed and agreed to by the group. The next steps in the project involve awarding the two construction contracts one for court construction and the other for clubhouse and surrounds redevelopment in September 2018 and mobilisation of contractors on site in October 2018. The project is due to be completed after Easter 2019. All this will be done in two stages so as to ensure that we can continue to run all of our existing programs with a minimum of disruption, although some inconvenience will unfortunately be inevitable and we ask for your patience. Sale Tennis Club is working closely with project managers, Wellington Shire Council, and all project stakeholders to ensure that disruption to usual Club programming and events is minimised wherever possible and we will be able to share a lot more on the project plan once contracts are let in September. Look out for the next exciting instalment as we finally commence the redevelopment that has been in the planning since 2008. We won’t really miss this ……. ..… as we move toward more of this. 2 Life Members Day – September 9 Our 14th Life Members Day will be held on Sunday, September 9. Life Members Day has grown to be one of the biggest and best days on our annual calendar. The day is a celebration of the contribution to our Club of all members, especially Life Members, who have been recognised for their outstanding contribution. Each year we welcome back to the Club the extended Flint and Best families to celebrate their lifelong association with Sale Tennis Club. Everyone is welcome, current members, former members, children, family, friends, new members and anybody else. You only need to have a pulse!! Our Club has awarded only 21 Life Memberships in its 67 year history. These Life Members are: “Nellie” Munn, Keith Prestney, Don Schuback, Lorraine McHattie, Keith Best, Monica Best, Moyra Maher, Helen Gerrand, Shirley McFarlane, Gary Schuback, James Maher, Bruce Carter, Jan Saville, Ian Flint, Robin Lowe, Mike Riley, Chris Deschepper, Murray Fitzclarence, Karen Deschepper, Karen Pollett and Debbie Krusic. It would be hard to measure the impact this group has made on the Sale Tennis Club and many are continuing to be to make an outstanding ongoing contribution. The ladies on Life Members Day play for the Keith Best Memorial Trophy. Last year Sue Mattson and Tina Page got on the Club honour board after a great afternoon of tennis saw them turn in a winning score. Sue is a two time winner and we are sure she would like to make it a “threepeat” for the trophy named in her father’s honour. The juniors on Life Members play for the Monica Best Memorial Trophy. Monica was the “Queen of the Kids” on Saturday mornings for a generation and the Monica Best spoon was a treasure that is still cherished by many of our former players. Sen Goold will be eligible for the juniors until about 2025 so has a chance to make it nearly 10 in a row based on his form in 2017. Wouldn’t that be something! However there will be plenty of other juniors looking to have their name on the board so Sen will need to bring his ”A” game. The men on Life Members Day will play for the Ian Flint Memorial Trophy. In 2017 Peter Lowe and Murray Fitzclarence were the joint winners. Murray took out the trophy despite a dodgy knee. This year he has a matching pair but that won’t stop him from attempting to defend his title. Can one of the Flints or Bests manage to edge him out in 2017 or will we have a new winner for 2018? The day’s activities commence from 11.30am with lunch followed by 3 sets of tennis from around 1.00 pm for the more enthusiastic and a relaxing drink or a cup of tea for the less energetic. At the end of the tennis we will have afternoon tea, presentation of trophies and the traditional raffle. The whole day is free, there will be a spinning wheel and a raffle and other giveaways. Coaches Column Summer Pennant Season is fast approaching with Seniors starting on October 6th and Juniors on October 13th. What do you need to do to be prepared for the season? 1. Don’t go out for the first match without having done any pre-season hitting. The first match is as important as the last match. How many times do you hear, “I will get better I’m just a 3 bit rusty”? OMG - don’t you be the one to let your team mates down. 2. Is your racquet ready for the year ahead? Are the strings at the tension they need be? If the racquet has been sitting in the cupboard or the boot of your car your first day’s tennis will be like hitting with a trampoline. Too many players just continue playing until a string breaks or, imagine if you don’t break strings. The type of string is also very important as to how you play. Speak to a coach (Oh that’s me!!) to see if the strings you are using suits you. 3. What should you take to tennis? People who have a racquet bag or backpack have an advantage if they take their bag onto the court (so many people leave their bag in the clubhouse). Things you should have in your bag – drink bottle, towel, sunscreen, repellent, snack, over-grip, hat, band-aids, sunglasses, spare racquet. There are others but everyone needs the above at some stage. A lot of people will get these items after a set has finished; bit late then. If you don’t have a racquet bag or backpack make sure you have these things with you in the car. Term 4 Coaching Players wanting coaching in Term 4 need to put forward their names ASAP. Cardio Tennis Is running Monday mornings at 8.45 am, Wednesday nights at 6.30 pm and Friday at 10 am. It’s only $8.00 to get fit and have fun per session. Hot Shots Is on Saturday mornings, running from 9am – 10am. Great fun for children just starting out and only $5 for the hour. Pro-Shop A new range of racquets and clothing have just arrived. Anything you require for tennis we will have or get. Prices won’t be beaten. Get ready for the summer season. Squad Training Happens on a Monday night and runs from 6.00 pm until 7.15 pm. See Mick if you are interested or to see if you qualify. Ladies Coaching We have free coaching for ladies starting out or looking to get back into tennis. Monday at 10.00 am or Friday at 9.00 am are the session times. Happy Hitting Mick Mullen 0409 651 556 4 Night Pennants – Grand Final Results Tuesday Night Night pennants headed into finals during June. Tuesday night team names were all based on a chocolate bar theme – inspired by our vending machine perhaps? The final was between Boost and Twirl so it was a chocolate spectacular with the added caramel and biscuits in the Boost coming out on top, just! Well done and thank you to Karen Deschepper and Paul Egan for their efforts on organising another great Tuesday night pennant. Boost: Rachel Straus, Barb McCubbin, Ryan Twirl: Rex Dowsett, Joshy John, Sam Chapman, Maynard, Eileen Burge & Ron Crawford. Lorraine Crawford & Simon Cook (filling in for the quite obviously injured Sam Cook).

2012 News Page 1 of 18 The Website of Maria Bueno, Tennis Champion 2012 NEWS ROGER FEDERER VISITS SAO PAULO, 6-9 December 2012 The Gillette Federer Tour kicked off Roger’s first South American visit in Sao Paulo, Brazil, last week and he was keen to involve Maria in the proceedings. The two met at the Player Party, where Roger was joined by Maria Sharapova, Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka, Serena Williams, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and the Bryan Brothers. Roger invited Maria to hit with him so he could see her legendary backhand for himself and arrangements were made for them to take to the court laid at the Ibirapuera indoor arena. Maria instructed him not to hit ‘anything spinny’, to which Roger replied that he would play her like he does with his parents and afterwards admitted she was way much better than them! Later he posted a picture of them on his Facebook page, saying: “About to play tennis Maria Esther Bueno… she has won 19 Grand Slam titles (7 singles, 11 doubles and 1 mixed)… she still plays amazing!” As for Maria, she was just astonished at how well he hit the ball. “He sliced one backhand that sped off the court like it had skidded off a line,” she said. “I said: Whoa! What was that? And he just laughed! “It was a fantastic experience and I think he enjoyed it too!” The two players swapped gifts – she gave him a framed photograph, which she signed ‘You are simply the best’ while he presented her with one of his rackets, personally signed on the handle.

  • Tennis Australia Submission to the Joint Select Committee On
Tennis Australia Submission to the Joint Select Committee on Gambling Reform June 2011 Tennis Australia Joint Select Committee Inquiry Submission Joint Select Committee on Gambling Reform Preliminary Notes to Terms of Reference In regard to the Terms of Reference of the Gambling Reform review as detailed, Tennis Australia would like to note that there are two very distinctive elements under review, that of the regulatory frameworks governing gambling and betting, and the broader social issue of problem gambling. 1. Regulatory review: As an opening comment, it is important to note that there is in reality a very low incidence of match fixing and corrupt activities within Australian sport, and that the major Australian professional sports generally do an excellent job in regulating their competitions and participants to the full extent that our powers allow. It is often the case however, that sporting organisations themselves have no capacity to police inappropriate activities. To address corrupt sport gambling activities that occur outside the jurisdiction of major professional sports, significant regulatory review is required. While the national and international governing bodies of tennis have in place stringent codes and penalties to deal with the participants in our sports and others over whom we have some control, we have no capacity to investigate or prosecute the corrupt activities of those operating outside our direct control. It is the activities of these criminals and corrupt individuals that have the capacity to bring the integrity of our sport into question, and significant legislative review is required to empower the legal system to take action against these persons.

  • Privilege in Tennis and Lawn Tennis: the Geelong and Royal South Yarra Examples but Not Forgetting the Story of the Farmer’S Wrist
PRIVILEGE IN TENNIS AND LAWN TENNIS: THE GEELONG AND ROYAL SOUTH YARRA EXAMPLES BUT NOT FORGETTING THE STORY OF THE FARMER’S WRIST GRAEME KINROSS SMITH DEAKIN UNIVERSITY I It is the season. That strange game called lawn tennis in- filtrated the Australian colonies in the mid 1870s when the wealthy, in emulation of English cousins, rigged nets in their city gardens or in the grounds of their country estates and invited long skirted ladies and men in cummerbunds, white shirts, and formal ties to tennis parties. The flight of the balls over nets five feet or more from the ground was demure and accompanied by giggles, gasps and gentlemanly shouts. By the 188Os, those whose enjoyment of these physical dashes required for its satisfaction something more codified in the way of a game were beginning to establish clubs for players of like mind. Their endeavours were guided by the All England Croquet Club at Wimbledon which had incorporated the words Lawn Tennis in-its title, in 1877,and which staged its first Gentlemen's Singles Championship under rules which modified those of the modern game's inventor,Major Wingfield, and allowed for a net still five feet high at the posts,a rectangular court rather than Wingfield's hour glass, and the modern system of scoring. That all occurred about a century ago. So it is the season- for celebrating the birth of the game, for taking stock, for writing the centenary histories of Australia's earliest tennis clubs. In 1878, the Melbourne Cricket Club added an asphalt court and a tennis club as an adjunct to cricket, and laid a grass court in 1880.

Where sponsorship deals have not been reported, the Sponsorship Today team actively seeks data through web searches, annual financial reports and contacting sponsors, agencies and rights holders. Most sponsorship deals are not reported and, of those that are, the majority do not provide accurate fee or duration data. IMR estimates unreported fee values through comparisons with similar deals, contacts with industry insiders and through its long experience of creating sponsorship analysis reports. There is no guarantee of accuracy of estimates. The sponsorship industry is also known to overstate sponsorship fee values. Such reports are frequently based on the maximum potential value of a deal and might include the total should all incentive clauses (such as sporting success) be met and no morality clauses invoked.
