Redevelopment Update To recap, the Sale Tennis Club Court Redevelopment project involves an extensive facility upgrade with the aim of becoming a centre of excellence for junior tennis development and enhancing the experience for existing and additional user groups.

Works will involve redeveloping two existing and constructing two new red porous courts which will meet official requirements for International Tennis Federation tournaments, as well as upgrading eight courts for club-level competitions. The existing Clubhouse will also be extended and refurbished as part of the project.

Seating, pathways, fencing and court lighting will also be upgraded, allowing the centre to attract higher grade tournaments and improve the amenity for the local community.

Plans of the proposed upgrades are on display on the Club noticeboard.

The project is currently behind schedule due to delays by the State Government in execution of the project funding agreement and a longer than anticipated detailed design phase. These delays are not expected to impact the overall operations of the Club in a negative way. In terms of budget, the project is on track.

Bi-monthly Project Control Group meetings are held between Wellington Shire, Tennis Victoria, Sport and Recreation Victoria, Latrobe Authority and Sale Tennis Club where the project status and next steps are discussed and agreed to by the group.

The next steps in the project involve awarding the two construction contracts one for court construction and the other for clubhouse and surrounds redevelopment in September 2018 and mobilisation of contractors on site in October 2018. The project is due to be completed after Easter 2019. All this will be done in two stages so as to ensure that we can continue to run all of our existing programs with a minimum of disruption, although some inconvenience will unfortunately be inevitable and we ask for your patience.

Sale Tennis Club is working closely with project managers, Wellington Shire Council, and all project stakeholders to ensure that disruption to usual Club programming and events is minimised wherever possible and we will be able to share a lot more on the project plan once contracts are let in September.

Look out for the next exciting instalment as we finally commence the redevelopment that has been in the planning since 2008.

We won’t really miss this ……. ..… as we move toward more of this. 2

Life Members Day – September 9 Our 14th Life Members Day will be held on Sunday, September 9. Life Members Day has grown to be one of the biggest and best days on our annual calendar. The day is a celebration of the contribution to our Club of all members, especially Life Members, who have been recognised for their outstanding contribution. Each year we welcome back to the Club the extended Flint and Best families to celebrate their lifelong association with Sale Tennis Club. Everyone is welcome, current members, former members, children, family, friends, new members and anybody else. You only need to have a pulse!!

Our Club has awarded only 21 Life Memberships in its 67 year history. These Life Members are: “Nellie” Munn, Keith Prestney, Don Schuback, Lorraine McHattie, Keith Best, Monica Best, Moyra Maher, Helen Gerrand, Shirley McFarlane, Gary Schuback, James Maher, Bruce Carter, Jan Saville, Ian Flint, Robin Lowe, Mike Riley, Chris Deschepper, Murray Fitzclarence, Karen Deschepper, Karen Pollett and Debbie Krusic. It would be hard to measure the impact this group has made on the Sale Tennis Club and many are continuing to be to make an outstanding ongoing contribution.

The ladies on Life Members Day play for the Keith Best Memorial Trophy. Last year Sue Mattson and Tina Page got on the Club honour board after a great afternoon of tennis saw them turn in a winning score. Sue is a two time winner and we are sure she would like to make it a “threepeat” for the trophy named in her father’s honour.

The juniors on Life Members play for the Monica Best Memorial Trophy. Monica was the “Queen of the Kids” on Saturday mornings for a generation and the Monica Best spoon was a treasure that is still cherished by many of our former players. Sen Goold will be eligible for the juniors until about 2025 so has a chance to make it nearly 10 in a row based on his form in 2017. Wouldn’t that be something! However there will be plenty of other juniors looking to have their name on the board so Sen will need to bring his ”A” game.

The men on Life Members Day will play for the Ian Flint Memorial Trophy. In 2017 Peter Lowe and Murray Fitzclarence were the joint winners. Murray took out the trophy despite a dodgy knee. This year he has a matching pair but that won’t stop him from attempting to defend his title. Can one of the Flints or Bests manage to edge him out in 2017 or will we have a new winner for 2018?

The day’s activities commence from 11.30am with lunch followed by 3 sets of tennis from around 1.00 pm for the more enthusiastic and a relaxing drink or a cup of tea for the less energetic. At the end of the tennis we will have afternoon tea, presentation of trophies and the traditional raffle. The whole day is free, there will be a spinning wheel and a raffle and other giveaways.

Coaches Column Summer Pennant Season is fast approaching with Seniors starting on October 6th and Juniors on October 13th. What do you need to do to be prepared for the season? 1. Don’t go out for the first match without having done any pre-season hitting. The first match is as important as the last match. How many times do you hear, “I will get better I’m just a 3 bit rusty”? OMG - don’t you be the one to let your team mates down.

2. Is your racquet ready for the year ahead? Are the strings at the tension they need be? If the racquet has been sitting in the cupboard or the boot of your car your first day’s tennis will be like hitting with a trampoline. Too many players just continue playing until a string breaks or, imagine if you don’t break strings. The type of string is also very important as to how you play. Speak to a coach (Oh that’s me!!) to see if the strings you are using suits you. 3. What should you take to tennis? People who have a racquet bag or backpack have an advantage if they take their bag onto the court (so many people leave their bag in the clubhouse). Things you should have in your bag – drink bottle, towel, sunscreen, repellent, snack, over-grip, hat, band-aids, sunglasses, spare racquet. There are others but everyone needs the above at some stage. A lot of people will get these items after a set has finished; bit late then. If you don’t have a racquet bag or backpack make sure you have these things with you in the car.

Night Pennants – Grand Final Results Tuesday Night Night pennants headed into finals during June. Tuesday night team names were all based on a chocolate bar theme – inspired by our vending machine perhaps? The final was between Boost and Twirl so it was a chocolate spectacular with the added caramel and biscuits in the Boost coming out on top, just! Well done and thank you to Karen Deschepper and Paul Egan for their efforts on organising another great Tuesday night pennant.

Boost: Rachel Straus, Barb McCubbin, Ryan Twirl: Rex Dowsett, Joshy John, Sam Chapman, Maynard, Eileen Burge & Ron Crawford. Lorraine Crawford & Simon Cook (filling in for the quite obviously injured Sam Cook).

Thursday Night

Riviera Signs - Robin Lowe, Charles Doube, Ian Wrigglesworth and Christine Shingles topped the home and away ladder at season end and held their form into the finals. In the grand final they played 2nd placed Sale Turf Club – Mark DiPietro, Ron Erskine, Tom Eason and Suzanne Ross. The final was close early with Riviera Signs pulling ahead in the final sets to run out winners by just a few games.

Thanks to our long time organiser Robin Lowe.

Junior News With spring now upon us it is time to get excited for the playing opportunities coming up.

Hotshots continues on Saturday mornings developing the skills of our future stars. Running from 9-10am beginners from age 5 and up can come along to establish skills and simply have fun.

Sunday Tournaments will continue on Sunday 9th and 16th September to get our juniors warmed up for Summer Pennant. Don’t forget that all juniors are welcome to stay for lunch and play in Life Members Day on Sunday 9th which will follow immediately after the morning tournament. All members of the family are welcome to play.

Names for Summer Junior Pennant need to be in by September 16 for team selection. Grab a sign up form from the Club, or find it on Facebook or simply message Mick on 0409 651 556.

Summer Pennant will commence October 13th. We will also be seeking parents to assist with team management and other duties during the pennant season. Please put your hand up if you are able to help out.

Winter Junior Tennis Competition The new season of Winter Junior Tennis Competition commenced on August 12 in sunny (but just a little cool) conditions. For those that wish to join in there are still matches on September 9 (before Life Members Day) and September 16.

6 Some of the winter junior competition crew with Mick. 2018 Sale Spring Junior Tournament Sale Tennis Club is gearing up for its second open junior tournament of the year with the 2018 Sale Spring Junior Tournament due to run from Sunday September 23 to Tuesday September 25. This tournament is a Silver Series tournament so will attract entries from around the state as juniors strive for the national points on offer.

Events offered are 10 & Under, 12 & Under, 14 & Under and 16 & Under Boys and Girls singles and doubles with the added bonus of consolation events for all singles events so everyone is guaranteed some good court time.

Entry is strictly online at http://www.tennis.com.au/tournaments with entries closing on Saturday September 8.

The Club will be offering catering for the three days along with a fully stocked pro-shop and restringing. Given the timing in the September school holidays and just before the October start to the summer tennis season it is hoped that many local juniors will use the Sale Spring Junior Tournament as the ideal preparation.

There are also further junior tournaments scheduled in Bairnsdale from October 1 - 3 and Traralgon from October 4 - 6 so there will be an opportunity for locals to get a lot of good tennis and visiting players to stay in Gippsland and enjoy an extended tennis circuit.

For additional information please contact Mick Mullen on 0409 651 556.

While the juniors will take care of themselves on court this is not so off court. We have court preparation and catering for over 50 kids and nearly as many parents and coaches off court. If you have a few spare hours on the 23rd, 24th or the 25th please contact Robin on 0418 514 788 to fill a timeslot and provide some valuable support. If you don’t have any time you could also help out by donating some of the food needed for the catering. This could include eggs, bacon, soup, ham and cheese sandwiches for toasties, cakes or slices. Please pitch in if you can and enjoy the great feeling that comes from volunteering some time and enjoying a common purpose. We hope to see you there.

Saturday Summer Pennant Starts October 6 If you are interested in playing Saturday Pennant please place your name on the registration sheet in the clubhouse. It is a great Saturday afternoon of competitive tennis which caters for players of all standards and features a unique social atmosphere.

We are very keen to try to get some additional teams this season to give us a good spread across all standards. This would be great for the social side of Saturday pennant and be a welcome addition to our Club. If you have any personal requests please speak to Club Captain, Mick Mullen. Suggestions for complete or partial teams are also possible. For all enquires please contact Mick on 0409 651 556.

Sale Central Storage return for season 2018/19 as the sponsor of the Sale Tennis Club Player and Team of the Year. Get your name on the Saturday Pennant list for your chance to win the Sale Tennis Club Player and Team of the Year.

Life Members Day on September 9 will also be used as a Senior Saturday Pennant Hit-Up Day. With senior pennant due to start on October 6, don’t miss the chance to get an early season warm up. Juniors also have a competition from 10:00 on September 9 that provides 7 a perfect lead in to the summer junior season that starts on October 13 and of course they are encouraged to stay on for Life Members Day.

2018 Sale Queens Birthday Junior Tournament Results Sale Tennis Club attracted some of ’s leading age juniors to our 2018 Queens Birthday Junior Tournament. In the 14 & Under Girls Kiah James from Mt Eliza was ranked 555 while the number 2 seed was Whitney Guan from Fitzroy North who is ranked just 10 points adrift, on 565. In the 14 & Under Boys Brian Capalnean from Maribynong is ranked 600 and Sean Flanagan from Mt Waverly was 639 in Australia. It was a similar story in the 12 & Under Girls with Gabrielle Villegas from Tarniet ranked 726 and Chelsea Stergiopoulos from Wantirna ranked 733. Players were competing for national player ranking points and, being a “Silver” event, the tournament attracted the second highest level of player ranking points. These ranking points are highly sought after by players pursuing a serious tennis calling as they allow automatic entry to the next level of tournaments and ultimately to senior tournaments on the professional circuit. The Club welcomed over 80 juniors across 135 entries in the 10, 12 and 14 and Under boys and girls age groups. While the top seeds dominated, by the end of the tournament they did not totally have it all their own way. In the 14 & U Girls Alexia Liparoti from Rye had to come from the number 4 seed to take the title and in the 12 & Under Girls number 2 seed Chelsea Steriopoulos defeated number 1 seed Gabrielle Villegas. With all of the “Out of town” talent on show it was tough going for our local juniors. However while they more often than not came second they conducted themselves in a way that makes us proud to have them as members of our Club. All anyone ever asks is that they compete fairly to the best of their ability and they did exactly that and more. Sale Tennis Club President Robin Lowe said. “As our major junior points event for the year the tournament brought a large crowd to Sale for the weekend. The event was a credit to the players, officials and everyone else involved. The feedback from the players and their parents and coaches was very positive and we are hoping for an even stronger field in 2019 when we will be able to showcase our redeveloped courts and clubrooms.”

Below right: Tournament Referee Geoff Armstrong with Tournament Director Mick Mullen.

“It takes a huge effort to stage an event of this size and the Club volunteers did an exceptional job as they all pulled together to ensure that it went smoothly. On the back of the success of this event we hope to see many of these players back for our Spring Junior Tournament in September.”

9

Mick Mullen was again our tournament director, a role he has really grown into. Mick’s quick wit and natural charm makes him popular with the players and parents alike. Geoff Armstrong was again the tournament referee and continues to support our events in his practical and cheerful way. Behind the scenes in the canteen a huge “Thank you” is owed to Sonya Stephenson who coordinated the entire catering effort. Sonya has been amazing with her catering efforts for our junior tournaments. For this event she was ably assisted by Masami Goold, Karen Pollett, Marie Hiskins, Tania Jarred, Carmel Elliott, Barb McCaughey, Tina and Jason Page, Robin Lowe, Liz Harrison, Lara Levchenko, Di Arnot and Murray Fitzclarence. We also had a professional photographer onsite for much of the event. Ian Fellows from GeoSnapShot spent three days taking some action photos and these are now available on the following link. A 25 seat bus will run from Sale at 9:00 am. We will be looking for at least 24 juniors and 12 seniors but the more the merrier. The whole day is free and lunch is provided. Sale Tennis Club makes the Tennis Victoria Top 50 The Top 50 Clubs has become an annual celebration of high performing tennis venues in Victoria. The Top 50 Club rankings are determined by the number of registered participants a club has during the financial year. Registered participants can include active club members, coaching participants, social players, night competition players, casual court bookers, etc. We estimate that Sale Tennis Club receives approximately 35,000 visits each year so it is not surprising we have a large user group. We were proud to say Sale Tennis Club came in at number 20 and was one of only 6 country venues in the Top 50.

Court Supervisors Course Ever considered become a tennis official? Being a court supervisor is a great way to be involved in tennis at the grassroots level. You will be responsible for monitoring a number of courts at a tournament or competition. You will assist and educate players, parents and coaches and assist in the smooth running of an event. This is especially important in regional areas where court supervisors have to travel to attend and the cost to the host clubs is increased by travel and accommodation costs. The minimum age for a court supervisor is 18. The next available course in Gippsland is at Traralgon Tennis Centre. Course: Thursday, 4th October 2018 @ 5:30pm-8:30pm Practical: Friday, 5th October 2018 @ 8am-2pm Assessment: Saturday, 6th October 2018 @ 8am-End of play If you are a Sale Tennis Club member we can also help out with your travel costs to get to and from Traralgon. Enrolment is available at: https://officials.wufoo.eu/forms/vic-court-supervisor-course-application-form/

Little Things You Can Do To Take The Lead Coach, parent, player or captain, anyone can be a leader at a local sporting club. Leadership doesn’t have to be a huge commitment. Great leaders will role-model the right behaviours in every day actions. Use these ideas to get started and begin taking the lead for your club and community.

1. Ask after a teammate. Leadership is looking after each other. If a teammate has missed a few training sessions, or seems a little down, ask them “Are you OK?” or let a trusted person at the Club know. 2. Be the designated driver. Whether driving to training, the big game or home from a club celebration, having a designated driver is important. Role-model the right behaviours, and help to keep yourself and your teammates safe by putting your hand up to be a responsible designated driver. 3. Pick up rubbish post-game. It’s the little things that make great leaders at local clubs. Being a leader doesn’t necessarily mean sitting on the committee or being a part of the on-field leadership group. Taking the lead can be as little as picking up rubbish after a match. Better yet, encourage others to get involved too. 4. Ask, ‘How can I help?’ Local sporting clubs are entirely volunteer-led. Spread the load by asking committee members, captains and coaches how you can help. Make it easier by listing the times you are available, as well as any handy skills you might have, e.g. social media guru or canteen experience. 5. Say “Thank you” to the volunteers, coaches, team managers and canteen staff. While too often they can be, these should not have to be thankless tasks

R U OK?Day – 13 September

R U OK?Day is our national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that any day is the day to ask, “Are you ok?” and support those struggling with life . Taking part can be as simple as learning R U OK?’s four steps below so you can have a conversation that could change a life. The day is about inspiring people to start these conversations every day of the year. Help get your school, workplace, club and community asking, "Are you ok?" Got a niggling feeling that someone you know or care about isn’t behaving as they normally would? Perhaps they seem out of sorts? More agitated or withdrawn? Or they’re just not themselves. Trust that gut instinct and act on it. By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up. If they say they are not ok, you can follow our conversation steps to show them they’re supported and help them find strategies to better manage the load. If they are ok, that person will know you’re someone who cares enough to ask.

Sale Cup – October 28

Sale Turf Club has built a reputation as the premier racecourse on the provincial racing circuit in Australia, with 18 race meetings to be run in the 2018/2019 racing season, including the flagship meeting - Sale Cup day - run on the last Sunday in October. Featuring the $200,000 Ladbrokes Sale Cup, this race always produces a quality field that is seldom seen outside of Melbourne. Many of the winners go on to win group races, bringing a taste of City racing to the Country. They look forward to a great crowd on October 28.

Greenwattle Racecourse offers first class facilities and Sale Turf Club pride themselves on being a community club with a family friendly atmosphere and with specific kids activities parents can be assured that this is a day out that all ages can enjoy! Sale Turf Club is a proud sponsor of Sale Tennis Club.

Working Bee A big “thank you” to everyone that helped out with our working bee on August 25. Unfortunately our fees do not cover anywhere near the full cost to maintain our facility and what we don’t get done ourselves we have to pay someone else to do for us.

We had a small but dedicated crew that

got through many important jobs and

the place looks better for the attention.

We were also pleased to give out the first of our Lakeside Club vouchers. Those that read the last newsletter would know that working bee participants now get a $40 venue voucher to Lakeside Club instead of a fee discount, making our Treasurers job much easier and providing support to both Clubs. We wish to thank Lakeside Club for their support and hope our Above: Maria Iuliano tackles working bee participants enjoy their cleaning the oven, which is now time there. like a brand new one.

Good Sports and Responsible Service of Alcohol Sale Tennis Club has a policy of funding its members and their immediate family to complete their Responsible Service of Alcohol qualification. This normally costs $75 per person. The Responsible Serving of Alcohol program aims to provide liquor service volunteers with the knowledge and awareness necessary to responsibly serve alcohol in licensed premises. The training ensures volunteers are aware of their legal rights and responsibilities when serving alcohol. The benefits from having trained volunteers include a safe environment for club members, greater awareness of legal liabilities and increased knowledge of alcohol and its effects. The next course is in October. If are a Club member and you or a family member would like to enroll in an RSA course please email Robin Lowe at [email protected] and the course will be absolutely free. For those who completed their RSA’s more than three years ago and have yet to do an update your RSA is unfortunately now out of date. To update your certificate go to http://www.vcglr.vic.gov.au/11home/liquor/education+and+training/responsible+service+of+ alcohol/rsa+online+refresher+course put in your certificate code from the top right hand corner of your original certificate and do the brief online tutorial and test. Once successful a Certificate of Completion will print to confirm your refresher course and you are good for another three years. The update is free. (If you have misplaced your certificate number contact us as there is a good chance that we have it on file at the Club)

This is another benefit of your Tennis Victoria membership. Quote “You can’t be frustrated always if somebody have more money than you, if somebody have a bigger house than you, if somebody have more grand slams. You can’t live with that feeling, no? You have to do your way, and then you have to be happy with the things that are happening to you, no? Because if you are looking next to you, you can be frustrated thinking that people have more things than you. I am not this kind of person – I’m happy that other people have things, and I am very satisfied, and I am very lucky with all the things that happened to me.” -

Rafael Nadal - 17 time Grand Slam winner. Rafa you are a legend!
