Many people believe Mount Sinai is located on the in . But there is no scriptural or archaeological evidence that supports this place as the biblical Mount Sinai. Let’s take a closer look and see if you agree. Read the article and answer the questions on the next page.

Mount Sinai

Did you know the Bible says that Mount Sinai is located in Arabia, not Egypt (Galatians 4:25)? Recently, archaeologists discovered a place that points to Jebel Lawz in Saudi Arabia as the location of the biblical Mount Sinai. This mountain is located in northwest Saudi Arabia near the coast of the Gulf of . An aerial map shows the mountain to be an almost semi-circular shape, enclosing an area of 5,000 acres. Unlike other mountains nearby, the entire top of Jebel el Lawz is blackened (Exodus 19:18). On the face of Jebel el Lawz is evidence of an ancient stream. The Bible says that when Moses destroyed the golden calf, he “cast the dust into the brook that descended out of the mount…” (Deuteronomy 9:21). In 1985, archaeologists found many large stone columns (or wells) nearby that formed a line along an ancient “lake” area bordering the holy precinct. Were these wells and lake part of a water supply system created to provide the Israelites with fresh water?

The Bible says, “Moses…built an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars according to the twelve tribes of Israel” (Exodus 24:4). At the base of Jebel el Lawz, archaeologists found an altar similar to the altar of “uncut” stone mentioned in the book of Exodus (Exodus 20:25; 24:4). Beside the altar was an ‘L’ shaped structure with walls about three feet thick. Was this area where animals were killed before being sacri!ced as a burnt o"ering? Nearby, archaeologists found twelve large granite boulders about six feet wide and nine feet tall. Approximately 2km away from the holy precinct archaeologists discovered a large stone altar with inscriptions of Egyptian animal fertility . If the Israelites created these inscriptions, then it makes sense they depicted Egyptian gods since they used to live in Egypt.
