The start of the 2014 season has been sadly affected by the passing of club legend Ross Gould whose invaluable contribution to Beena was featured in the first edition of The Lion this year. Players wore two black arm bands on

Saturday to honour the memories of Ross and former club identity Kevin Owen. Last Sunday hundred of Ross’s friends joined his family for a wonderful Memorial service at High School. Former club president John Coulson spoke on behalf of the club. A “Wake” will be held in the clubrooms on Tuesday 15th April commencing 7.30 pm. Some other personal items: Club legend Brian Ormsby has not been well in recent weeks and his absence together with wife/timekeeper Noreen was Ambrosini noted by all present – get well soon Brian. Where is “Nashy”? - His father Club Secretary Ian said that he is overseas on a working holiday – no planned date of return. “Sel” Curtis is looking remarkably well following a coronary scare and several stents. The players appreciate the ‘sugar fixes’ provided by Sally Moloney at the breaks in eacheach game. match. Her sons Alex and Sam “Buckets” are both starring in the Ressies at present. Sally – the editor also thanks you for the ‘snakes’ and ‘jelly babies’. Dominque and Treasure Jennings are organising a Ladies Day for 10th May – complimentary champagne and afternoon tea will be available. More details to follow.

THE RESERVES

Thursday 10th April 2014

Dear Murrumbeena FC Community,

Welcome to our weekly property update. So far this year, there have been about 17,500 auction and private sales in Victoria. This is about 3% higher than this time last year. Last Saturday Thomson successfully auctioned 29A Sussex Street, Brighton, for $2.3 million, suitably exceeding the vendor's reserve, and securing the buyer a lovely home to renovate over time. A crowd of 80 plus enjoyed proceedings as David took them for a trip down memory lane recanting Brighton as it was 42 years ago, when the vendors first moved to Brighton. This result endorses the Thomson selling strategy, that clever presentation and marketing coupled with transparent pricing ensures 100% of buyers, at this level, are engaged with the property. Opportunities abound locally with two Thomson properties ideally positioned for investors and home buyers. Priced to sell below $500,000 is a two bedroom villa unit in Coorigil Road, Carnegie and a two bedroom apartment in Malvern East. Both for sale privately - see more details below. Leading up to Easter is a perfect time to call us in to price your home or investment as you may wish to use the four day break to consider your options regarding selling or re-financing. Give us a call - it's just part of the service we offer.

THE RESERVES

The Reserves had a good win after a rather slow start. Former Under 19s including Chris Kirk-Williams, Sam Moloney, Mitch Hendley, Cam Rundell, Dechlan Turkington and Daniel Chukwan joined the more experienced players including Shaun Thompson, Kane Downing, Andy Ellis, Adam Vanderneut, Shane Dennehy, Alex Moloney and Michael Leary. New recruits to the club who played included Chris Cairns, Addy Weitzer, Len Sacco and Geoff Martin. The first quarter was even with both teams playing well. Beena was able to open up a twenty point margin for both the second and third quarters. The fierce tackling of the Beena boys, exemplified by Andy Ellis bringing down the tallest opponent, rattled the Moorabbin men. Beena players began to show their confidence in each other – many had never played together before. The last quarter was testament to the team’s greater fitness and skills set as they came home with an additional nine goals to finish as twelve goal winners. Some of Tom Hutching’s ruck taps to fast runners Mike Leary and Andy Ellis were telling as they converted to goals. The chief goal kickers were Chris Kirk-Williams and Shaun Thompson, both with four goals. Overall this was a good team win. Best players included Michael Leary, Alex Moloney, Mitch Hendley, Tom Hutching, Chris Kirk Williams and Andy Ellis.

THE SENIORS The Seniors

Similar to the Reserves, the Seniors had a serious injection of energy and sheer talent via a group of former Under 19s including Jackson Meredith, Bryn Plate, Henry Kerstens, Darcy Hargrave and Callum Kirk-Williams. New recruits included talented Dylan Elkman from Ormond FC while Mark Richardson and Sam Parkers enjoyed their promotions from the Reserves. The game was a good arm wrestle between the two sides with Murrumbeena breaking away in the second half. The first quarter started as a struggle in which our backline held Moorabbin to a goal while our forwards replied with 3.7-25. Dean Spanos was everywhere feeding the ball out to the runners including Jakco Meredith and Josh Hargreaves. The second quarter saw some wasted opportunities as Beena kicked 4.4-28 while Moorabbin come back with 2.3-15. It was strange for the observers to see Mitch Walder in attack but his three goals left no doubt of his ability. The third quarter was once again hard fought with the Beena starting to pull away by the end of the quarter. Beena’s inaccurate kicking - a 1.6-12 – a three quarter total of seventeen behinds, reduced what should have been an overwhelming lead at three quarter time. Tom “The Sauce” Valenta was as steady as a rock in defence, leading by example. In the final quarter our speed and agility started to show out. The backline was again solid and our forward started to find space. Beena had ten separate scorers to kick the 12 goals tells the story of the forwards. Even the backs including Sauce Valenta were being encouraged into the forward line to score. When Beena becomes truly accurate, we will really shine. It was a good team effort, with special mentions for Sauce, Mitch Walder (we must find a way of stopping him going overseas) Dean Spanos, Jacko Meredith (he is light of stature but they couldn’t catch him) and Michael Farthing.

The Lions Pride (MFC Coterie) met for its annual season launch dinner at the “Lions Pride” Coterie Emerald Hotel in Clarendon Street South Melbourne on Wednesday 9th April. The guest of honour was Alan Wickes, former Season Launch Collingwood and Frankston player who is th prominent in promoting programs to assist 9 April youth in the Frankston region.
