"Top Things To Do in Paramaribo" A multicultural city with a historic center recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Paramaribo is an important financial center of Suriname. The national capital is home to a series of landmarks which lend credence to its cultural and historical nuances. Set on the banks of the Suriname River, the city is also known for its diversity. Created by: Cityseeker 10 Locations Bookmarked Fort Zeelandia "A Surinamese Historic Fortress" Standing over the banks of Suriname River, Fort Zeelandia is a monumental relic from the Colonial Era. Built-in 1641 as a fortified Dutch trading post, it was taken over by English troops led by Lord Willoughby. After nearly two decades, it was conquered by the Dutch in 1667 and subsequently named Fort Zeelandia. From being a defensive barrier to a by Jeroen van Luin prison for political convicts, the bastions have served several purposes over the years. Built-in red bricks which were imported from the Netherlands, the fortress is maintained in excellent condition even today. Housing a museum that documents local history, visitors can catch a glimpse of the dungeons and other harsh reminders of the structure's militaristic past. Menzo Ethnic Group Boundaries in Multicultural Suriname A study on language use, ethnic boundaries, core values and national identification among Creoles and Hindustanis in Suriname Master thesis in Communication and Information Sciences Specialization Intercultural Communication Tilburg University 2012 Monique C. Menzo ANR 505874 Supervisors Prof. dr. Sjaak Kroon Dr. Kutlay Yağmur Second reader Prof. dr. Ruben Gowricharn FOREWORD This thesis represents my final assignment for my Master’s degree in Intercultural Communication. Research has been conducted in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. On the front page a photograph is presented that was taken in Paramaribo. The photograph displays a porch along which large photographs are placed of, presumably, Surinamese inhabitants. These photographs illustrate the variety of ethnicities in Suriname, which is a main theme in this thesis. To that end, I placed this photograph on the front page. All pictures that come across in this thesis are taken by me. The experience of working in a country which is very different from my own country has provided me with new (intercultural) skills. Although I encountered numerous difficulties, I am proud to say that I have overcome these and that I can now present my thesis. I would not have been able to finish this thesis without the help of a number of kind and generous individuals. First of all, I would like to thank my mother and my stepfather for supporting me in my decision to conduct my research in Suriname. -

GATEWAY to SURINAME Upon Entry in the Republic of Suriname Every
GATEWAY TO SURINAME Upon entry in the Republic of Suriname every Chinese citizen is obliged to respect and abide the national legislation and regulations. On aliens is applicable the Immigration law (Vreemdelingenwet 1991 (S.B. 1992 no. 3) and the Gazette on aliens (het Vreemdelingenbesluit 1995 (S.B. 1995 no.85). Furthermore, Suriname is since 25 May 2007 party to the United Nations Convention against transnational Organized Crime (the Palermo Convention) and the Protocols thereto namely the Protocol to prevent, suppress and punish trafficking in persons, especially women and children and the Protocol against smuggling of migrants by land, sea and air. To prevent human trafficking of women and children it is necessary to internationally bind against these horrible acts of humanity. According to abovementioned Convention transnational organized crime is defined as recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labor or services, slavery or practices Bonded labor, or debt bondage, is probably the least known form of labor trafficking today, and yet it is the most widely used method of enslaving people. To beware, victims become "bonded" when their labor is demanded as a means of repayment for a loan or service in which its terms and conditions have not been defined or in which the value of the victims’ services is not applied toward the liquidation of the debt. -
