Daarvoor heb ik literatuurstudie maar ook veldwerk verricht en voor dat laatste heb ik de tempels Shree Raam Mandir in Wijchen en Sada Shiva Dham in Loenen bezocht. Het onderzoek heeft met onderbrekingen ruim een half jaar in beslag genomen en het uitwerken ervan eveneens, want ieder antwoord dat ik vond, riep een nieuwe vraag op. En het is een onderwerp dat niet eindig is, de ontwikkelingen staan nooit stil. Zo was ik nog in de laatste week voor de afronding van mijn scriptie genoodzaakt om een verandering door te voeren, omdat er een nieuwe intentioneel gebouwde tempel geopend werd. Mijn interesse in de derde godsdienst van Nederland is gewekt door dr. Freek L. Bakker, docent en hindoeïsme-deskundige in optima forma. Hij was bereid om met mij mee te denken over de onderzoeksvraag en heeft me bijzonder nauwgezet begeleid en gecoacht. Daarvoor, en voor zijn geduld met mij, ben ik hem zeer veel dank verschuldigd. Hier zouden drie uitroeptekens niet misstaan hebben. Tevens bedank ik dr. Katja Rakow voor haar bereidheid om als tweede lezer op te treden. De medewerking van de leiding en bezoekers van de tempels in Wijchen en Loenen is onontbeerlijk geweest voor mijn research. Door pandit Jaipalsingh Lalbahardoersing van de Shree Raam Mandir, zijn leerling Antonio en Bhaskaranand, de woordvoerder van Sada Shiva Dham, hiervoor te bedanken, sluit ik hen allen in. Tot slot een dankwoord voor mijn echtgenoot Dick. Zijn onvoorwaardelijke steun in elk denkbaar opzicht en op ieder moment is voor mij van onschatbare waarde geweest. Anne Cazemier Arnhem, 26 juni 2017 5 Samenvatting Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog ontwikkelde het hindoeïsme zich tot de derde godsdienst van Nederland. Geleidelijk aan krijgt de religie vastere vormen door de immigratie van Surinaams- hindostaanse hindoes rond 1975 en de grote toename van westerse aanhangers van Indiase hindoeïstische stromingen in de tweede helft van de 20ste eeuw. Met mijn onderzoek naar twee intentioneel gebouwde tempels in respectievelijk Wijchen en Loenen en de daarbij behorende groepen gelovigen breng ik de resultaten van die ontwikkeling in kaart. Het antwoord op de hoofdvraag, ‘Hoe heeft het hindoeïsme zich ontwikkeld in Nederland?’, volgt na gedegen literatuurstudie en veldwerk door middel van tempelbezoeken, interviews en geluidsopnamen. De tempelgebouwen zowel als de mensen verschillen in fysiek opzicht van elkaar. De Wijchense Shree Raam Mandir wordt bezocht door Surinaams-hindostaanse hindoes en oogt westers met Surinaamse of Indiase accenten. De Loenense tempel in de ashram Sada Shiva Dham herbergt de veelal westerse volgelingen van goeroe Babaji en heeft exotische kenmerken. De heiligdommen zijn ontworpen en gebouwd in relatie tot India, met inachtneming van het Nederlandse klimaat en de Nederlandse wet- en regelgeving. Voor beide geloofsgroeperingen geldt dat gewijde ruimte belangrijk is. De tempels zijn opgericht na een eensluidend hindoeïstisch ritueel, de bhumi puja. De Surinaams-hindostaanse en de westerse gelovigen leven allebei naar de hindoetraditie. Evenwel noemen zij hun religie niet ‘hindoeïsme’, maar sanatan dharm. Zij volgen respectievelijk de stroming van de sanatani’s en de goeroe-bhakti traditie. Hoewel ze een onderscheidende signatuur hebben, komen hun geloofsinhouden op hoofdpunten overeen, zoals ook de liturgieën en de ceremonieën. Het zingen van mantra’s, bhajans en kirtan is naast de offerrituelen een betekenisvol aspect van de eredienst. De uitvoering ervan verschilt in muzikaal opzicht door de etniciteit van de communiteiten. Uit mijn onderzoek komt naar voren dat het muzikale aspect van de erediensten in de hindoeïstische tradities in Nederland nog niet uitputtend is geobserveerd. De gemeenschap van Surinaams-hindostaanse hindoes in Nederland is groter dan die van mensen van westerse origine en daarmee zijn de gelovigen van de Shree Raam Mandir zichtbaarder in de maatschappij. Vier grote wereldgodsdiensten treffen we hier aan: christendom, jodendom, hindoeïsme en islam. Lange tijd echter hebben twee percepties de religieuze beeldvorming over Suriname bepaald: in de eerste plaats werd het sedert de zeventiende eeuw tot circa 1940 beschouwd als een protestantse kolonie en in de tweede plaats van 1940 tot circa eind jaren zestig in de twintigste eeuw als een overwegend christelijk land. Furthermore, Suriname is since 25 May 2007 party to the United Nations Convention against transnational Organized Crime (the Palermo Convention) and the Protocols thereto namely the Protocol to prevent, suppress and punish trafficking in persons, especially women and children and the Protocol against smuggling of migrants by land, sea and air. To prevent human trafficking of women and children it is necessary to internationally bind against these horrible acts of humanity. According to abovementioned Convention transnational organized crime is defined as recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labor or services, slavery or practices Bonded labor, or debt bondage, is probably the least known form of labor trafficking today, and yet it is the most widely used method of enslaving people. To beware, victims become "bonded" when their labor is demanded as a means of repayment for a loan or service in which its terms and conditions have not been defined or in which the value of the victims’ services is not applied toward the liquidation of the debt.
