Depending on the context of a certain era, the cult of heroes or martyrs - original and ancestral - gave substance to people, nation- states or religions. Many ceremonies and festivals are celebrating and commemorating events or personalities through manifestations built on consecrated scenarios and make use of certain, sacred symbols which function as memory bridges (lieux de mémorire) between generations. The martyrdom of Constantine Brâncoveanu and his sons had its 300th commemoration in 2014. This article aims to analyze, from the perspective of media anthropology, the ceremonial and sacred structures of events that marked the "Brâncoveanu Year" and the construction of Constantin Brâncoveanu’s martyric image as reflected by the press. 175 Managementul Intercultural Volumul XVI, Nr. 2 (31), 2014 1. A Typology of Fake News
JOURNAL OF COMPARATIVE RESEARCH IN ANTHROPOLOGY AND SOCIOLOGY Copyright © The Author, 2020 Volume 11, Number 2 Winter 2020 ISSN 2068 – 0317 http://compaso.eu Misinformation ecosystems: A typology of fake news Gabriel-Alexandru Toma1 Adina-Gabriela Scripcariu2 Abstract The paper proposes the concept of “misinformation ecosystems” to make sense of the contemporary fake news phenomenon. Misinformation ecosystems are interconnected chains of false or misleading reports that become real in their consequences. Misinformation ecosystems are discourse communities that emerged as side effects of affective and linguistic capitalism in contemporary society. Therefore, the performative character of mutually reinforcing false reports explains the social and political impact of fake news. By exploring the manifestation of fake news in Romania, the data analysis reveals a typology of deceptive content circulated in online environments. The typology includes five analytical categories of fake news that constitutes misinformation ecosystems: “recurrent occurrences”, “scapegoat offensives”, “pseudoscientific gaze”, “combo strikes”, and “humorous hijacks”. Empirical evidence supports measures against fake news that should address the social validation processes at the level of media or inter- media networks. ROMANIA Neither “Fleishig” Nor “Milchig”: a Comparative Study
hn hk io il sy SY ek eh Chapter Four hn hk io il sy SY ek eh hn hk io il sy SY ek eh hn hk io il sy SY ek eh hn hk io il sy SY ek eh ROMANIA Neither “Fleishig” nor “Milchig”: A Comparative Study Michael Shafir Right a fter the change of regime in December 1989, Romania displayed some features that were common to most postcommunist EastC entral Eu ro pean countries in regard to antisemitism, as well as some specific features of its own. Freed from ideological and censorship constraints, latent anti semitism erupted in the public space, and after a while it became a cross party phenomenon. This does not mean that po liti cal parties had all put antisemitism on their banners; it rather means that regardless of ideology, both antisemitic prejudice and, above all, the perception of Romania’s “dark past”1 of the interwar period and the Second World War, as well as the role Jews had allegedly played in the early stage of communism, figured in simi lar shades, if not intensity, in all po liti cal formations. The “dark past” was by and large ignored and occasionally justified, while the claim about the Jews was overemphasized in what turned out to be a re nais sance of the “Judeo Bolshevik” myth.2 All of these ele ments were common to most East Central Eu ro pean countries. This is not to say that diferences between attitudes w ere not noticeable. One could, for example, distinguish between: (a) self exculpatory nostalgic -1— antisemitism, or parties and movements of a “radical return” to models of 0— the interwar radical right; (b) self -
Core Story on the Evening of 31.01.2017 the Romanian
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON ROMANIA’S ANTICORRUPTION IMPLOSION European Centre for Anticorruption and State Building, www.againstcorruption.eu, www.romaniacurata.ro, http://sar.org.ro/?lang=en , www.integrity-index.org Core story On the evening of 31.01.2017 the Romanian government chaired by Sorin Grindeanu adopted as a government ordinance a bill (Ordinance 13/2017) proposing amendments to Law no.268/2009 on the Criminal Code and Law 135/2010 on Criminal Code procedures. The government claimed that the changes were imposed by Romania’s overcrowding prisons and repeated cases lost at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, who had threatened with a larger fine if some prison reform would not have been implemented. Romania has the largest number of prisoners in other EU member countries from all EU MS, besides a nearly double occupancy by domestic prisoners in the country. The government has the right to pass emergency ordinances, which become immediately enforced and are only later submitted to Parliamentary approval, and Criminal Code has been changed before in this way. Each government for the past twelve years has pledged to stop favouring this way of legislating over normal procedures, but in fact this has become the default way to pass bills due to high transaction costs in the Parliament. The other motive invoked by the government was that the Constitutional Court ruled in May 2016 as unconstitutional an article on power abuse asking for clarification1. The Court motivated with the Council of Europe (Venice Commission) report2, which asks that this notion is well specified to prevent the political abuse of anticorruption.
