You’re hired! WIRRAL West MP Esther McVey has followed in the footsteps of Alan Sugar by appointing her own apprentice. She has taken on 18-yearold Clare Worsnup to work at her office. Esther said: “It’s good to talk about apprenticeships but surely it is better to turn words into action. To that end, I decided to employ an apprentice to work and train in my constituency office.”

Sail project hits the rocks THE controversial Sail Hotel project on the West Kirby waterfront has received a major setback. At a Wirral council meeting on 14th October, councillors voted against giving the developers Carpenter Investments more time. They thanked for the company for its efforts but that the scheme was recommended for refusal The project, which includes a new sailing club, has run into problems over traffic access and parking on the waterfront. Cllr Andrew Hodson, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Planning Strategy said: “Carpenter Investments have worked diligently to develop a scheme that would provide the people of Wirral and the region with a new high quality sailing school building and boutique hotel. “However, during this time we have been faced with one of the most hard hitting recessions on record and despite both Carpenter’s and the Council’s best efforts, have been unable to develop a proposal that adds up financially whilst delivering a realistic resolution to the loss of car parking at the Dee Lane site. Due to these issues Cabinet has decided not to proceed further with the development. “Council officers will now look at possible solutions to improving the Sailing School without impacting on the public car parking provision in the area.”

WIRRAL GRAMMAR SCHOOL FOR GIRLS Wirral Grammar School for Girls has been a Grammar School catering for girls aged 11-19 since 1931 and they now have just over 1,000 pupils, 300 of them in the sixth form. The results at A‘ ’-Level are outstanding: There is a 100% pass rate and an average UCAS point score of 411.0. 67% gained the top A* to B grades. These results placed us among the top schools in Wirral and the North West. In 2010 all the girls who applied to university were offered a place, the majority at leading institutions including Oxford and Cambridge. One of the schools many strengths are the number of girls studying mathematics at Advanced level. There are currently 136 girls studying this subject and this has necessitated the building of two new classrooms to house the growing numbers studying this important subject. The school is justifiably proud of the varied clubs and societies that the girls take part in. They have highly successful sports teams, orchestras, and choirs. Many subject departments organise visits both locally and abroad. Sixth form girls support many charities, most recently raising £1200 for Cancer Research and £1000 for the national “Jeans for Genes” day. You will find here a school which is not only achieving outstanding academic results but where there is a busy, lively buzz of activity and learning. They have always fostered traditional values, notably self- discipline, community spirit and thoughtfulness for others. Wirral Grammar School for Girls has the most up-to-date resources and facilities that prepare their students for life as adults in the 21st century. The whole school community are delighted that they are one of the few schools to have three specialisms and are now a Language College, a Humanities College and a Science College. We invite you to join us for the Open Evening of our outstanding Sixth Form. We look forward to welcoming all Year 11 girls who are ready for the next challenge in their lives. F or more details please go to our website or phone us on 0151 644 8282. www.wirralgrammar-girls.wirral.sch.uk

Last year’s Boxing Day dip Dare to take the icy plunge? THE annual Wirral Boxing Day Dip being held again in West Kirby Marine Lake on Boxing Day at 11am. Organiser John McGowan is looking for support and volunteers alike to join in on to help raise funds for this year’s adopted charity, the Wirral based Northern Lights children’s charity. Said John: “We are hoping to attract 50 volunteers/victims to take place in the dip on Boxing Day this year, last year we had 24 particpants in total and want to more than double this figure this year. “Raising money could not be easier, “dippers” can obtain an entry pack containing information and sponsorship forms from myself, as part of this pack we will even set up a free online sponsorship page for each participant. Alternatively participants (dippers) can turn up on the day and pay a “Dipping Fee” of £25 to take part. “There is no need to swim around for a set time or stay in the water for a long period, this event is just a case of running into the water and running out again as quick as possible! Wet suits are allowed, but in the spirit of the event last year nobody wore one (one guy even went in wearing a santa suit!)” There is no lower age limit, however anyone under the age of 16 must be accompannied by an adult at all times. If you know of anyone wishing to take part or you would like to volunteer a family friend or work colleague, please contact John McGowan by email at admin@ jnacaravanrecycling.co.uk or by phone on 07521 630524.

Cash win is just the ticket

Suzanne Ball, of West Kirby, was the lucky winner of the Claire House Cash Raffle 2010. Mrs Ball scooped a fantastic £2000 and her cheque was presented to her by Kirsty Wright, Senior Fundraiser and Natalie Allison, Apprentice. Suzanne is looking forward to taking her family out for a meal to celebrate her winnings. Poignantly, Suzanne’s son, Mark Ball born in 1963, suffered from Hurlers Syndrome, a little known condition at the time but much more researched now. Suzanne nursed Mark herself as there were no facilities such as Claire House available for Mark and his family. Sadly Mark passed away in 1983, aged 21 years old. Suzanne stated she would have greatly benefited from a support network such as Claire House and felt Mark would have appreciated a place such as Claire House to attend, she offers her support to Claire House any way she can. Claire House Appeals Team would like to thank Suzanne for her contribution to our annual fundraising target of £2.5m and we look forward to her support in years to come.
