THIS WEEK IN THE EARLY LEARNING CENTER Welcome ELC! After busily preparing classrooms to get ready for the first day of school, the teachers in the ELC were so excited to finally greet their new students! On Wednesday, teachers welcomed both familiar faces and new friends into classes. They spent lots of time getting to know each other's names, likes, favorite foods, and routines. The building was abuzz with children laughing and singing as they explored their new home!

THIS WEEK IN THE LOWER SCHOOL 1st Grade Orientation On Tuesday, our 1st graders excitedly arrived at school with their parents for orientation. While the students met their teachers and visited their class areas, the parents learned important information from administrators, the nurse, guidance department, the transportation coordinator, and more! It was an exciting way for the first graders to begin their journey in the Big Building! http://www.saracademy.org/cf_enotify/view.cfm?n=14202 3/6 9/9/2016 SAR Academy: Koleinu V4

THIS WEEK IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL Middle School Orientation

On Wednesday, 6th graders had an exciting first day of school! Orientation began in the gym, where they were introduced to their new middle school lives, and games were played to get to know their teachers. Shortly after, there was an ice cream party to celebrate. The remainder of orientation was spent setting up their new iPads!

On Tuesday, 7th and 8th graders came to school for orientation. After a brief d'var Torah from Rabbi Krauss and an

introduction by Ms. Ostro Nagata, the students learned about the new block schedule and met with their advisors. The 7th graders went through a mock schedule to practice going from class to class, and the 8th graders learned about the Middle School Handbook, which they taught to the 6th and 7th graders later in the week.

DVAR TORAH Parshat Shoftim By Miriam Friedman, 4th Grade Teacher

In this week's parsha, Parshat Shoftim, we learn the Mitzvah of "Bal Tashchit" not to waste. The source of this Mitzva comes from perek 20, pasuk 19 which states:

ִכּי ָתצוּר ֶאל ִעיר יָ ִמים ַר ִבּים ְל ִה ָלּ ֵחם ָע ֶלי ָה ְל ָת ְפ ָשׂהּ א ַת ְשׁ ִחית ֶאת ֵע ָצהּ ִלנְדּ ֹ ַח ָע ָליו ַגּ ְר ֶזן

When you besiege a city for many days to wage war against it to capture it, you shall not destroy

its trees by wielding an ax against them.

The Sefer HaChinuch explains that we learn from here not to be wasteful or destructive. He elaborates that the way of the righteous is to "love peace, be happy with the good in others, bring others close to Torah, and not waste even a small mustard seed."

He associates the first three qualities: loving peace, finding the good in others, and teaching Torah with being able to see the value in even the smallest objects. By nurturing this ethic of recognizing the value in everything around us, we are teaching ourselves to appreciate those around us. With this outlook, we can then truly be a force for good in the lives of those around us.
