So Jacobs may well have been 2nd, as per Mallon and Buchanan, although zur Megede also has him as 3s3. Applegarth is now given as 2s5 by Mallon and Magnusson, with Vygoda (BOH) now 3s5. 400m 1912 Only Ernest Henley in semi-final 3 is consistently listed as a dnf. The official report says that the last 3 in semi-final 2 did not finish, which would include Seedhouse and Wells, but the report omits to list Wells and Person of Germany. 1920 The official report has incomplete details and only winning times, but Mallon has found results including distances between all places from another source, so we now have estimated times for all of the competitors in the quarter finals. 4 800m 1908 Ian Buchanan clarified the inclusion of Manogue in his Internationals book: "Although listed as an entrant in the 1908 Official Report there was, until recently, no evidence that he actually competed in the Olympics. However, a report in the South London Harriers Gazette states that he started in Heat Four of the 800, but dropped out around the halfway mark." 1912 Burton: Buchanan says "he finished last in his heat in Stockholm". zur Megede says 5h4, as does Buchanan, but Magnusson says "5h4 dnf?". Hulford: Mallon also has dnf s2, but zur Megede has 7s1 and Buchanan has 7s2 (typo). Magnusson has "7s1 dnf?". 1500m 1908 E.V. Loney was Ernest Vincent Loney b. 3 Jul 1882, so Vincent rather than Victor as in some sources. 5000m 1912 Ruffell is given as 6h2 in Buchanan and zur Megede. The official report states: "One lap and a half from the finish Fitzgerald and Ruffel had had enough and retired". It also indicates that Lee and Treble did not finish, although there may be other evidence that justifies their 4th places that are widely quoted and accepted by all modern publications. 10000m 1912 Official report says: dnf h1 - Lee and Ruffell; dnf h2 - Humphreys and Hibbins; dnf h3 - Wallach Most sources give these as dnf. zur Megede gives placings for all starters, perhaps indicating the order in which they dropped out, and Buchanan and Phillips both follow these placings. As Bob Phillips writes on the American Kramer, "according to the New York Times he did not finish 10th as reported, but retired in the 18th lap". So perhaps the same applied to the British runners. That would mean a clean sweep of dnfs/dns for the United Kingdom. 1936 Jack Potts may have finished the race - see Track Stats Vol 51 No 3. Film evidence seems to show him being lapped very late in the race. 1948 Mike Sheridan lists McCooke as 12th in 31:23.0 in his 2010 book "Who's Who of British International Athletes 1945-1960".

  • OTC Elite Athletes Shine on Diamond League Stage
OTC Elite Athletes Shine On Diamond League Stage By Curtis Anderson Oregon Track Club Elite’s Francine Niyonsaba and Nijel Amos continued to be among the shining stars on the Diamond League circuit in July. The two 800-meter runners closed out the month ranked second in the world in their re- spective events after posting stunning season-best marks just off their lifetime PRs. Niyonsaba placed second in Monaco on July 20 with a time of 1 minute, 55.96 seconds, adding to her overall lead in the Diamond League standings, 43 points in six races, with her fifth sub-1:58 performance of the outdoor season. Earlier in the month, the reigning 2016 Olympic silver medalist claimed Dia- mond League victories in Lausanne, Switzerland, on July 5 and Rabat, Moroc- Thompson, @elevation0m Photo by Travis co, on July 13. Nijel Amos “That’s one tough lady,” OTC Elite coach Mark Rowland said of the back-to-back wins. “She ran in front and towed the rest of the athletes to a fast time. She showed her competitive nature down the home straight by refusing to relinquish the lead.” The native of Burundi set her personal best of 1:55.47 last year, and she clocked her season best of 1:55.86 in Paris on June 30. After the race in Monaco, Niyonsaba flew home to Burundi to meet with government officials to discuss help- ing underserved women and children in that country through the establishment of her proposed foundation. She also represents UNICEF in Burundi as a motivational speaker.

Towards a [re]conceptualisation of power in high-performance athletics in the UK A CONSTERDINE PhD 2020 Towards a [re]conceptualisation of power in high-performance athletics in the UK ALEXANDRA CONSTERDINE A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Manchester Metropolitan University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences Manchester Metropolitan University 2020 ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I lay the blame for this thesis at the door of my first Director of Studies, Dr Bill Taylor. As it was his foresight, patience and wisdom that has encouraged me to persevere, so he must shoulder some of the burden. Despite being constantly challenged in the last five years, I offer my unending gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to him. I also extend sincere thanks as well as further blame to my supervisory team. To Dr Laura Gale, my second Director of Studies, Dr Ryan Groom and Dr Samantha Oldfield who have provided me with their well measured advice and questions. Furthermore, I recognise that without the willing contribution from all who acted as research participants I would have no thesis at all. Therefore, thank you to everyone I interviewed and I hope to do justice to your involvement. To my well-meaning friends and family who forgave me for not being fully present, I extend my warmest gratitude. I am indebted to your foolhardy belief in me throughout my research. My parents, Rose and Bill, have kept me grounded throughout. Finally, to the two people most affected by my studies, Tom and Mikey, I thank you the most.
