  • Film Noir in Postwar Japan Imogen Sara Smith
FILM NOIR IN POSTWAR JAPAN Imogen Sara Smith uined buildings and neon signs are reflected in the dark, oily surface of a stagnant pond. Noxious bubbles rise to the surface of the water, which holds the drowned corpses of a bicycle, a straw sandal, and a child’s doll. In Akira Kurosawa’s Drunken Angel (1948), this fetid swamp is the center of a disheveled, yakuza-infested Tokyo neighborhood and a symbol of the sickness rotting the soul of postwar Japan. It breeds mosquitos, typhus, and tuberculosis. Around its edges, people mourn their losses, patch their wounds, drown their sorrows, and wrestle with what they have been, what they are, what they want to be. Things looked black for Japan in the aftermath of World War II. Black markets sprang up, as they did in every war-damaged country. Radioactive “black rain” fell after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Black Spring was the title of a 1953 publication that cited Japanese women’s accounts of rape by Occupation forces. In “Early Japanese Noir” (2014), Homer B. Pettey wrote that in Japanese language and culture, “absence, failure, or being wrong is typified by blackness, as it also indicates the Japanese cultural abhorrence for imperfection or defilement, as in dirt, filth, smut, or being charred.” In films about postwar malaise like Drunken Angel, Kenji Mizoguchi’s Women of the Night (1948), and Masaki Kobayashi’s Black River (1957), filth is everywhere: pestilent cesspools, burnt-out rubble, grungy alleys, garbage-strewn lots, sleazy pleasure districts, squalid shacks, and all the human misery and depravity that go along with these settings.

  • Conventions of This Guide
The VINTAGE NINJA Movie & TV Guide VOL. 1: JAPAN, LIVE ACTION — 1920s-1980s © Keith J. Rainville, 2021 You want to see the movies Sho Kosugi grew up watching, the ones that inspired animation designers and video game artists of the 80s and 90s, the ones the James Bond people ripped off in the 60s, but where to start? Or, you’ve amassed a collection of these gems already but know there’s more out there. Here’s a user- friendly reference for both pursuits, with quick-and-easy recommendations for Japanese ninja titles from the silent era to the late 80s — their general flavor and tone, varying trends and tropes, and a lot of surprises. CONVENTIONS OF THIS GUIDE: • TITLES — for better or worse I’ve used the most commonly used translations out there. These are often the most accessible references to these films so, even if the title’s been butchered, there’s still a practical advantage when searching them out. • VN as an entity has to be cautious when it comes to supporting/endorsing certain not-so-authorized film collecting activities out there, so sorry, there’s no links here... • YES THERE’S MORE TO COME! This will be updated often and I have a huge stack of discs and files awaiting input. Plus future volumes on Anime, Japan 1990—present, Hong Kong/Chinese films, ninja-like hooded heroes, and more. • Yes, we welcome corrections and additions. Email me through the website. • See the Appendixes at the end for more info! Images © Shochiku Co., Ltd, 1965. Text © Keith J.

  • The Remembered War: the Korean War in American Culture, 1953-1995
THE REMEMBERED WAR: THE KOREAN WAR IN AMERICAN CULTURE, 1953-1995 by JONATHAN C. MERRITT ANDREW J. HUEBNER, COMMITTEE CHAIR KARI FREDERICKSON EDWARD T. LINENTHAL MARGARET PEACOCK SARAH STEINBOCK-PRATT A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2017 Copyright Jonathan C. Merritt 2017 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT After three years of bitter fighting, the Korean War ended on July 27, 1953. It profoundly shaped and directed American Cold War policy for the next four decades. Korea’s place in American culture and memory, however, has seemingly been less profound. This dissertation reassesses the war’s legacy from the armistice in 1953 through the construction of the Korean War Veterans Memorial in 1995. It argues that representations of the war have shifted over time in response to contemporary social concerns, emphasizing different aspects of the war that resonated with Americans at the time. Simultaneously, the image of Korea as the Forgotten War has also shaped the war’s meaning and such a label, ironically, has had an important impact on how it has been remembered. Finally, the memory of Korea has been unable to escape the long shadows cast by other conflicts of the twentieth century, especially World War II and Vietnam. These wars have simultaneously limited and broadened the Korean War’s legacy. Taking these factors into consideration, this dissertation reassesses the Korean War’s place in American culture by tracing the various ways it has been remembered and represented.
